The FAILED San Francisco 49ers Rebrand from 1991 

A big factor in fans opposition to 49ers logo is that no NFL team has ever moved to new market if their cities initials were on the helmet

I remembered this debacle in rebranding as if it was yesterday, and it SUCKED BADLY, so bad that they had to revert back to the classical version.

I think the SF logo looks much better than the one the oenership wanted as a replacement. That 1991 logo looks like a logo on a 90's candy bar. It just doesn't seem as creative. That's just my opinion though.

They had black drop shadows on their number in 1955 and 1994 tribute uniforms. That is what inspired the 1996-2008 uniforms.

Just a small correction... the 49ers actually changed their uniforms to the darker red and shadow numbers in 1996 however they wore white pants in '96 and '97 and then for whatever reason changed the pants to gold metallic in 1998. No coincidence that they entered a period of underachieving for most of the 2000s. When they changed back to the cherry red traditional look in 2009 the 49ers fortunes turned and they have been to 3 Super Bowls since 2012. I really hate when legacy teams drastically change their uniforms. When Ron Wolf got to Green Bay in 1992 he had a rendering of new uniforms where they scrapped the yellow for metallic gold and removed the stripping from the helmet and pants. They were UUUGLY!! Thankfully team management nixed the idea and the uniforms going back to Lombardi are still being used. Hats off to the aforementioned Packers, Colts, Cowboys, Raiders, Browns, etc for honoring tradition. Happy to see the Lions and Jets will be a wearing a throwback style uniform in place of the gaudy crap. I think it be great if the Seahawks went back to the King Dome Steve Largent uni with the blue tops, silver pants and huge white numbers or the Patriots bring back the red tops and Pat Patriot helmet.

I'm a 49ers fan from day one in my family I remember people asking us in the stands at Candlestick if we thought it was time for the 49ers to change the helmet and everyone said hell no hell to the f no and who has more SB wins and runs on the one yard line not the sea Hawks

If I was sf fan, I would hate it too. The fear would have been this would be a permanent logo change which outrage is understandable. I suppose teams back then didn’t change their uniforms or logo so frequently so the fear was real. It is very dated, screams 90s. But if they did adopt it for a decade, I doubt it would be still around today. Sort of like all the cartoon characters with attitudes in sports jerseys in the 90s: mighty ducks, raptors, grizzlies, pistons… all cool throwbacks now but belongs in the 90s.

The USFL thought that logo sucked

I mean if the failed logo was on Niner socks I’d wear it and what Id do is put the logo on the sleeves and keep the helmet the same Ol SF
