The Failed Trade That Screwed the Buffalo Bills Over

When two parties agree on a trade, you assume that the trade is going to go through at that point, right? You reasonably assume that you can be in reliance of that party to complete their end of the bargain, and that they won't take back the trade. However, in 1985, that's not what happened with the Buffalo Bills, when they tried to acquire veteran tight end Dan Ross from the Cincinnati Bengals, and were completely screwed over

1984, in my opinion, was the 2nd worst bills season. Only 1971 was worse. The 84 bills started 0-11, couldn't win a road game, committed 44 turnovers, had a point differential of -204. They had the 4th worst offense, and the 2nd worst defense. It was unbelievably horrendous

I remember that game as I lived in Western NY that year. Dallas actually sucked that year but were considered a top tier team the year before. I was a Redskins fan and not into the Bills but for that game I loved the Bills since I hated Dallas. Greg Bell ran all over Dallas in that game.

1:21 I was at this game. The Bills had a 17-0 4th quarter lead and lost. Also, you mentioned the 1985 Cardinals only scoring 278 points. Note Reggie White wearing #91. The odd thing about that was that the previous year they had one of the most prolific offenses in football finishing 3rd behind the Dolphins and 49ers in scoring.

Was that the Niel Lomax year?
@gluserty
@gluserty 2 месяца назад
@@PhilP8980Yes; Lomax was the NFC's answer to Dan Marino in 1984, but in 1985 offensive coordinator Rod Dowhower left for the Colts job (that went badly), while offensive stars like Roy Green & Ottis Anderson were injured and missed some games (1985 Cardinals started 3-1 then fell off a cliff). Lomax lost his form for two seasons (Cardinals even drafted Kelly Stouffer, who held out, but considering how he played for the Seahawks, no biggie), then regained his form in 1987. Sadly, Lomax's career was ended by an arthritic/degenerative hip during the 1988 season. I think Lomax had an interesting, star-crossed career.

I never thought I would a person give a tiger some dap and live to tell about it! 😄 As for the Bengals' about-face, considering what I've heard about that club's upper management over the years, I can't say I'm all that shocked. Screwing the Bills like this seems like such a Bengals thing to do.

What gets me is the fact that Mike Brown lied as to the reason for backing out of the deal. It was known that Harris would be out for six weeks. Mike Brown could have told the truth. Granted, it wouldn't have changed anything as regards the outcome. But, shouldn't honesty still be the best policy? Having said that, it's abundantly clear that Mike Brown is the person ultimately responsible for the perils which the Cincinnati Bengals have encountered during the last forty years. Each time the Bengals enjoy even a modicum of success, Mike Brown always has to step in and put the kibash on that. I can't figure out how he comes from the same stock as Paul and Katie. And, of course, he absolutely refuses to recognize his own incompetence and step down for the good of the program. It makes me wonder if Mike Brown views Shad Khan as more of a son than he does Katie as a daughter. He and Khan certainly deserve each other in the incompetence department.

This is very similar to what happened in 2008 in the Premier League between Chelsea, Man City & Robinho. For some further context in the summer of 2008, it was clear that Robinho would be leaving Real Madrid having fallen out with just about everyone at the club & had rejected an extension on his contract. Real Madrid were negotiating with Chelsea on selling him there & Chelsea were keen on signing him because he would be a great strike partner with Didier Drogba & make Chelsea's attack one of most lethal in Europe. However at the last minute thanks to being flush with cash having been just taken over by the royal family of Abu Dhabi, Man City basically stole Robinho away from Chelsea. Robinho would go on to have a great first season with Man City scoring 14 goals making him City's top scorer & the 4th highest scorer in the Premier League even though City finished 10th that season. Meanwhile it could be argued that Chelsea were the ones that were screwed out of the Robinho deal as while they finished 3rd in the Premier League, they went through two different coaches mainly because the first coach was blamed for not letting Chelsea's attack be more creative which would have been helped by Robinho. Unfortunately Robinho's career would go downhill quickly after that 2008/09 season as his second season at City was an absolute disaster & he would be sold to Milan the following season where he was mostly on the bench or on loan at Santos during his 4 seasons there due his poor performances & bad attitude. He then went to China then Turkey & finished out his career at Santos in 2020.

Dan Ross, MA born and raised. Probably along with Sean Jones the best football players that came from Northeastern (FCS football was dropped over 10 years ago). same school that Reggie Lewis JJ Barea went for basketball. Interesting fact with Northeastern is Matthew's Arena is the oldest D1 arena still in use, the Celtics and Bruins original homes.

@@matthewdaley746 yes Reggie's death plus awful draft picks and acquisitions set the Celtics back 2 decades. Another thing with Dan Ross' Alma mater, it is a solid baseball program as it produced Adam Ottovino, Carlos Pena and its coached by Mike Glavine, Tom's brother.

MNF put bad teams at home and good teams on the road, to make it more likely that the game would be somewhat competitive. Early years of MNF had the Raiders with a great MNF record, and it seems many of those games were on the road because they didn't want good teams having a home blowout.
