If you grew up in 80s tv and movies, this happened a lot, the stunt guys or “bad guys” became stars filling in for stars. The twist here is the romance with the female director. This too occasionally happens, actors fall for each, directors fall for stars, etc. But yes, stunt doubles are highly underrated, like Mandalorian season 3 Pedro Pascal had a film that took months longer to complete than scheduled, so his stunt double ended up doing 90% of the movie and Pedro just shot a few shots and read the lines on the rest to get the project done on time.
