It's a fall from grace as brutal as is it is sudden. Carlos Ghosn, the all-powerful boss of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, arrested as he got off his private jet in Tokyo on suspicion of tax fraud. The boss of the world's biggest auto alliance is due to be out of a job before the end of the week leaving a sometimes uneasy partnership hanging in the balance.

Ghosn is in jail for 110 days with no charges. They can keep "rearresting" him every 10 days before they release him on another made up charge that they cant prove, but they hope that another 10 days of no lights off, 24 hour interrogations round the clock, and no contact with lawyers or family, they can break him and force a confession. It's amazing the yakuza prosecutors have the nerve to show their face bragging about how they can torture confessions so well they have a 99% confession rate. It's hard to respect a barbaric judiciary like Japan has.

@@johnfilmore7638 With your either unintentional or malicious change of terminologies (i.e. conviction rate vs confession rate, 10 days vs 23 days, "no charge" with 110 days yet he was charged merely after one extension), I'm surprised at your bravery by shouting out unintelligent junk without fearing being laughed at. Japan has different laws, accept it. Don't like it? Too bad.

I'm Japanese. Tax evasion had been recognized for two years, was probably tolerated. However, as Mr. Ghosn launched a policy to merge Renault and Nissan under the pressure of the French government, it's considered that the opposing Nissan executives accused Ghosn's fraud. Sales of the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi group is the largest in the world, exceeding Toyota and VW. The merger that will bring Nissan's technological capabilities, brand power, and sales capabilities to Renault (half of Nissan's sales) should be a big advantage for France, but not for Nissan.

This happened because Ghosn talked about the integration Renault and Nissan in this summer. Nissan management side never think about the integration with Renault.If Ghosn never talk about the integration then nothing happened. We all think that the management of Renault will not able to survive in future severe technical competition against VW,Toyota and other rising new-tech. car manufacturers. Macron has to handle this matter very carefully for the future of Renault.

1. Over $50 million was unreported during his operation in Nissan 2. Over $200k was used (again Nissan money, not from his pocket) for his family vacation trip 3. He bought his mother's house using Nissan money (not from his pocket) 4. He bought his furnitures for his home using Nissan money (not from his pocket, called region office to take care the bill) I only know these facts but isn't it enough evidences him getting punished? Only reason I see French bashes Japan because of their Gov. own 15% of Renault and it is damaging their reputation and money. Wonder if the part of $50 million was used for running the president of France as they are close friend, that what conspiracy says..........

Norio-san then why doesn't the Prosecution charge Goshn and stop torturing Ghosn for 110 days trying to extract a confession? Japanese prosecutors are acting like Yakuza. The world is watching them act like gangsters making a mockery of Japanese Law. Prosecutors have told many lies and cannot prove any of their lies otherwise they would follow the law and charge Ghosn in court. Why do you protect Yakuza Prosecutors and let them run a criminal operation?

@@jhca4671 Ghosn has been held 110 days without charge, just torture to force a confession. If the charges are true it is bad. But if yakuza prosecutors can just lie and keep Ghosn in jail 110 days with no charges in court (not fake lying charges to torture without trial), are you ok if Japanese Yakuza Prosecutors claim Ghosn killed 20 people because its Japanese Yakuza Prosecutors so you love Japanese hate French Ghosn? How long can someone be kept in jail with only accusations not proven in court before you say too much? Is 1 years kept in jail without court ok? Is 5 years ok? Is just killing Ghosn with no trial ok? What does Japan think is justice, just telling lies and never proving them?

The major concern for Nissan was the merger plan pushed by the principal share holder French Government which wanted control Nissan 100%. Gohsn was refusing first but accepted on the condition of staying another 4 or 5 years as chairman of Renault which has say for Nissan. Japan will want to get Nissan back under Japanese full control. The brand is iconic for them as GM is in the US. Japanese culture and saving face is critical here. @@oOZdemOo No where did I criticize Ghosn or Renault for not financially saving Nissan. But for Nissan it was a deal made in desperation to save itself, not one it wanted to make! If Nissan sees the opportunity to get independent of Renault here, I think they will take it. Renault's reputation in the USA is awful. USA is critical market for Nissan. Consumer Reports and many others are down rating Nissan reliability especially for their horrible CVT transmissions that often fail before 60K miles. Nissan needs to get sole control of it's engineering back and restore it's reputation before it loses it completely. In fact, Bloomberg is reporting Nissan is already seeking the removal of Ghosn. I don't know what Ghosn did, if anything wrong, but Nissan clearly is seizing it's chance here.

People simple rule pay your taxes properly,fill and submitt your income tax return properly. In Japan Ghosn case is not rare ! not b.cuz his a French or what so ever , Taxation in Japan is very strict lots of people has been penalize b.cuz of this, They dont care who you are!. Speaking of myself Ive got a warning too and I payed triple. Im telling you this, that, The goverment official working in Taxation are very hard working, when they got their eyes on you they were going to follow you 24/7 , lots of you think, why now ?, they are dogged people but dont act impulsively they gathered facts little by little so quitely not giving you any clue to hide anything ,and when they got all the evidence proving you are guilty then thats it THE END. Until now Im wondering why they were able to find out about my income tax ( scratching my head)

How is a boy kicking a bag of air around a field worth more than a man who saved Nissan from bankruptcy? Nice to see the Japanese jumping in and sticking a knife in his back. If you upset someone at high level there is nothing that can protect you. On the other hand if you earn so much why do you need to commit fraud? something doesn't add up and I believe there is something not quite right.

The CEO Sylvain D. Asked me to stop the mailing between us. I am still wondering where the customary flower bouquet that only board members receive when they are sick.

@peterfireflylund

Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are three separate companies. On the other hand, they work VERY closely together, share executives, own part of each other (and of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance company). If we pretend it is a single company (which it *almost* is), then it is one of the top three car companies in the world. VW, Toyota, and RNM are so close that it's hard to say on any given day which one is larger than the others. And why is RNM so big? Carlos Ghosn. Why does Nissan even still exist as a company? Carlos Ghosn.

Ghosn rescued Nissan that is truth. However, after then, what he has done was inexcusable enough to get fired. He failed our trust so badly indeed.after all he is just obsessed with limitless money itself . moreover Tokyo prosecutors office keeps him for interrogation, that has been criticisedby the other countries. It happened in Japan , each country has its own way, no oneshould interfere with Japanese ways of investigations. we must wait and see the resultwithout any interference.

I love how the French try to dismiss the crimes after saying "many already knew this", and change the subject into this "why now?" "boardroom coup?" kind of Japan bashing. Just because "many already knew it", you can't just brush embezzlement of 150 million and stealing company assets for personal use under the carpet and let him continue as Chairman.

There would be no Nissan without Renualt. I am not French but this is true. If Renualt had not bought Nissan in bankruptcy, the creditors would have sold each factory to anyone, and Nissan would have not existed anymore because management had destroyed the brand.

Do not be too eager to do a jig and reel at the sight of Ghosn’s woes. Consider the relative immunity of Japanese executives who can get away scot-free with peddling lethal airbags, dodgy steel parts strewn throughout every conceivable bit of infrastructure or commodity, or erecting nuclear plants smack-bang adjacent to sites long known to be exposed to potential tectonic doomsday.

Huw More facts: All the Nissan customers/suckers who’s wallets were drained from cvt failure, oil consumption, radiators that destroy transmissions, transfer case failures, cam shaft sensors that fail, timing chains that fail, rusted altimas, and catalytic converter failures, this is where Carlos got all his money from. He sold them the same car twice and sometimes three times over. They were a Nissan shell with French unreliability. I have been saying this for yeeeeeears! He’s been their personal crook all this time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until he did this to the government that someone finally decided to go after him.
