The actors who played Travis and Nick both requested off the show. Cliff Curtis (Travis) is part of the Avatar franchise and wanted to be free to do its sequels. Frank Dillane lives in Europe and it sounds like he may have had some off-camera demons.

I wish they had shown, for at least 2 seasons, the literal fall of society. The paranoia, the denial, the slow collapse of a world we once knew. That was what I certainly craved as we had skipped all of it in TWD. That would have been phenomenal to have the slow, confusing and mindblowing reality of an apocalyptic world to every day people. People who never shot a gun and so they had to learn. People who were scared and didn't suddenly become badass fighters but who were human and relatable; slowly debating what the new normal is and what they're capable of and morally able to do. The irony in fear is that there isn't actually enough fear. The characters are fine with dead people eating others. No slow build up, no real terror, no trying to save neighbors in vain etc etc. Just straight to killing machines, leaving their home and everything they know. Leaving all supplies, familiarity, not staying to help others (as would be the normal human, pre apocalyptic mentality) Instead they turned from a family/community to only caring about survival and number one, all knowing how to fight and shoot, no grief for the loss of the entire world as they knew it. I could go on and on but THAT is what many of us wanted. The beginning of an actual zombie apocalypse with real people who are scared to death, who have no idea how to survive and who have to gain courage and skills in this new world.

Like Rick's group had better progression from hopeful survivors to nihilistic killers, and that group doesn't even start at the beginning of the apocalypse. In FTWD, it's like as soon as they first see a zombie, they immediately have a TWD season 5 mentality of killing anyone who looks at them dirty, not trusting anyone and have little fear (ironic) about society collapsing. Not to mention we only had like 3 episodes of the collapse which happened too quickly.

It's all Scott Gimple's fault. He came in at season 4 because he was forced off TWD for running that show to the ground, and he immediately tried turning season 4 of Fear into season 8 of TWD. The moment I heard him becoming new show runner I knew the show was set for failure.

@@Lalvon_Zelpharr what's disappointing is that Scott Gimple is an extremely talented writer. He wrote iconic episodes like Clear and The Grove, which showed it very clearly. That's what made his ruination of Fear so much more disheartening. S4 was on pace to outclass TWD and he absolutely squandered it when he had the potential to make it incredible.
@alkavonstra5479
@alkavonstra5479 4 года назад
Honestly, Gimple was heavily carried through s4 and 5 of TWD. He had the comics to go off of, so foundation was set. He had former seasons that already setup beautifully crafted characters with exponentially increasing chemistry and flow. He had some of the best plot lines to cover (i.e. Terminus, Alexandria safe-zone, the end of Governor) which truthfully could be done blindly and still work out perfectly fine. What happened in s6-8 was he actually began to take hold of the series and control more aspects of each plotline as it progressed. In other shows, he may have shown great potential as a skilled writer, but after 5 seasons collectively (FTWD S4-5 + TWD S6-8), he just isn't that good. It has been literally written in front of our eyes that he either has no intentions of making this show great, or he's just...bad. There is no way the past 5 years went down the way they did if not for those two possibilities.

I would have preferred that they didn't kill Nick and just had left him in limbo after the season finale where he was swept away in the waters. They could have implied he drowned and left an opening for him to have somehow survived, for a later storyline. Instead they had him survive the finale, just to be killed in a more permanent fashion that had no way of ever creating a scenario that he may have come back from. Madison though, they have left it open that she could possible return as you never actually see her die. Either way though, the death of those two characters were like nails in the coffin. The show lost direction and the writing just went downhill.

L4D and TWD are my two favorite zombie medias of all time so I'd crave anything from those universes that explains why the military fell so quickly (In TWD its because theyre dumb but in L4D the military/government is in the active process of falling, since they abandoned every state east of the Mississippi River because of the powerful zombies, however I'd still like for Valve to make a movie, tv-show, or another game that shows the events of the downfall as it happened, rather than just showing the aftermath like TWD)

In Fear they kind of touch on it. Troops are dieing in parts of the country they aren't from or nescisarrily care about. They want to help their families and they are stationed away from them. Why work for pay if pay might not matter? There is a shortage of manpower when essentially trying to police an entire country so the gaps in logists leads to a higher casualty rate. All our high tech equipment means nothing without a vast logistcal network ( the U.S Homeland). I'd have quite fighting too in the situations depicted. Family first. Pay second. Flag is third.

I would suggest reading the book World War Z, they touch on a little bit about how the US went to shit by stating that at first everyone was in denial about the zombies and the government was covering it up to prevent people freaking out, plus they had just come out of a war they lost ad people didn't have much faith in the government, the military really falls apart after a battle called Yonkers, the news about zombies is out and troops are mobilized to a town called Yonkers to fight the zombies using all the latest gear available, and it becomes a shitshow with the commanders putting people directly in the path of zombies, having them wear bulky armor, and having them equipped with a headset that let them get a bird's eye view of the situation and see what other soldiers are seeing, which goes to hell when they wast ammo to do vary little to the zombies and get to see the million+ hoard coming at them, plus getting to see first hand as a guy gets eaten alive by a zombie that was in a house they didn't clear behind their lines

Having Abraham, Eugene, and maybe that girlfriend of Abraham's (She always wore that camo hat but I can't remember her name) would have made more sense. They were originally from Texas, which would have been a close proximity to where the Fear characters eventually ended up. They wouldn't even have to timejump. The idea of Morgan walking across half the country from Alexandria is just too much to be believed. Morgan was the WORST of the Walking Dead characters to crossover. Also the character Madison was killed and in her interviews she says it shocked her when she found out and she thought she would ride the show out till the end. I just did did a FTWD rewatch of the first 3 seasons and finished the finale for sea3 last night and I think all 3 seasons are terrific . If the writers and amc really wanted to do a crossover, why didn’t they crossover Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita. They could’ve kept the timeline more close to the end of season 3 and the Fear group would meet Abraham and gang as they’re on there way to DC (before they met Glenn) and this would have been way more better for the show, and we’d learn more about Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita a little bit more. This would also make sense to use these characters, because they came from Texas and that area. This would’ve made a lot more sense and later on if this crossover didn’t pay off then they would have the shows split apart again, as obviously they’d have to get rid of them to match the timeline to season 4 of TWD. But if it did payoff, then at the right moment, then do another appropriate crossover at an appropriate and better time. Btw I like the video and content, keep it up, stay safe.

Morgan should've had his own spin-off series with John Dorie, June, and Althea (and every other character that followed up after, so Jim, Sarah, Wendell, Clayton, Logan). FTWD should've continued on focusing on the Clark family + Daniel, Strand, Luciana, and Taqa. Nick should've been the one leading the horde inside the baseball stadium since he had to die (the actor wanted to leave the show). Madison should've gone on to lead the group and grow as a strong leader. Dwight could've been introduced in FTWD or the Morgan spin-off since it makes sense for him to go wherever. He could even appear on both because he will follow his wife throughout the entire country. This show totally ruined its potential by killing off Madison and Nick. New people, new behaviours/attitudes, new events. That being said, season 4’s time jump and change in setting was in my opinion one of the shows biggest mistakes. Things became a lot more predictable and cliche’d and just plain stupid. Scott gimple basically just got a hard on for having a spaghetti western esque zombie show and changed everything to achieve that with the addition to shoe in Morgan.

FTWD lost me with one line: "9 days later" when Chris mused about the time spend in Quarantine. The only thing I really wanted to see a show tackling a believable take on how society would collapse in an outbreak slow zombies, but we aren't shown that. Probably because the writers had now clue how to make that a believable story to tell - so they just skipped it. After they skipped in what I was interested in the first place, I stopped caring.

Same here. I carried on watching for a few episodes after that but then once society had fallen it was essentially TWD with inferior characters, so why would I want to watch that? Made it halfway through the second season. Was a real missed opportunity.

I agree. They should have never done a time jump in the first season. It was suppose to show a slow burn, not just get into it. that's what got me to watch it in the first place. Then I stopped watching, after Alex's last appearance.

Exactly. FTWD became just another version of TWD, with fresher zombies. I really wanted to see the 'nuts and bolts' explanation of how a fully technological and sophisticated world technology of the 21st century could be taken down and collapse in the 30 or so days Rick was in a coma. Instead we got 'just because...' broad-brushstrokes. Guy looks out the window of a plane at night. L.A.'s grid goes dark chunk by chunk. There! That's your explanation. Shut up and like it. By the way, if you want to see a 'nuts and bolts' highly detailed description of society disappearing, read 1958's 'Alas, Babylon' about a small pocket in central Florida that survives nuclear war. Author: Pat Frank.

I'm actually surprised how many of us really wanted that slow burn. I wonder if most audiences have the tolerance for that anymore? It would probably take a caliber of writers higher than AMC would want to pay. Maybe HBO or Showtime could pull it off. I really want to see a good group of characters from day one when the very first headline comes out, and then I want it to take a few months or maybe even a year or two as civilization slowly unwinds and no one seems able to control any area for more than a few weeks or months - I want to see what areas of the world really fall first. Would it be rural areas? The suburbs? The cities? Slow burn is where it's at. I really hoped FTWD would be that.

Brilliant review of the series! Explained very well. I have tons of complaints about FTWD, but I didn't realize what happened with the posters - Thank You! Yes, what happened with the ratings of Season 4 episode 1 is how Gimple operated with TWD, too, taking advantage of the hard work others have done - lots of people watched S4 E01due to being so satisfied with Season 3 (along with the SuperBowl) and in TWD, viewers got heavily invested in the story & characters in Season 1 thanks to Frank Darabont, then Gimple and others took advantage of all the hard work he did, when they fired him for being upset that they were not doing their jobs properly. If only more actors, other than just one, would have protested when Darabont was unjustly fired in the very beginning and had Gimple's group of a-holes removed, imagine how amazing the franchise would be! The Science Fiction & Horror genres would have a better reputation and viewers would have quality shows to watch. When Darabont was in charge, the story engaged us and made us use our brains to think, but the storytelling from all the shows now is nitwitted, braindead, and humiliating for everyone.
@mrrooster4876

I recently went back and watched season 1 and the first few EP of season 2 that Durabont produced and directed. Man is it a wayyyyy better show. It doesn't feel the same as at all you can feel The Green Mile and Shawshank in the production and camera work. It's a masterpiece of film made for television. Glen and Rick in the city...Mearle on the rooftop...Otis and Shane at the school...Everything about it is exponentially better. Then FTWD starts off with so in much potential...and it's ruined by another Gimple/Hurd/AMC takeover. FTWD then immediately begins using the same camera filters, character development and shitty writing. AMC ruined everything The Walking Dead franchise could have been....

Hello! I've watched before, but this video got me thinking, what would *I* do if I'd handed the reigns for Fear. I personally think their main problem was having a screwy timeline in the first place. The timeline of the actual fall doesn't make enough sense for it to work pacing-wise. *But,* if I had been told to write the pilot, this would be my pitch: We open on a family, (either the Clarke’s, or following the Morales family would be a cool tie-in with my ending), and they get a call saying that their grandfather has had a heart attack. We follow them rushing to the hospital, saying bye, to grandpa, etc. Grandpa flatlines and dies, and the family tearfully starts to leave, but then they hear stirring behind them. They turn around and see Grandpa moving and twitching. He’s still flatlined, so they stare, confused and horrified. He gives a final twitch and his bloodshot eyes open as the granddaughter says “Grandpa?” *Cut to title card* The rest of the first season follows the family trying to wrap their heads around what the hell happened, and the cases of dead people coming back and behaving oddly popping up over the country. The first season ends with the president making a speech to the country about “grave times ahead” and putting the country on a national lockdown. Season 2 (there’d only be 2 seasons) follows the family dealing with being quarantined. (yeah yeah I know it hits too close I promise we don’t stay in quarantine) They’re locked down and desperate for answers and news from the outside, which is being denied to them. The midseason finale is them getting ahold of the quarantine-zone doctor and threatening them for information. (Perhaps Madison’s role if we keep the Clarkes?) The doctor reveals what we as viewers know--that the dead are coming back to life and eating people. The second half of season 2 follows the world being unable to cope with the pandemic and falling apart. Our main family watches the cities be bombed, quarantine zones be abandoned, etc. The family and other side characters flee and form a settlement outside of the city, much like Rick’s group at the quarry. The series finale is some of the group members wandering around, looking for supplies. They come across the hospital where Rick is. The final shot is a zoom-in on the hospital, zooming through the destroyed hospital and all the way into black...and with a jolt Officer Rick Grimes wakes from his coma.

The way I took the marketing and what made me excited for the show was seeing the decline of society at the beginning of the outbreak. When in season 2, they practically abandoned that idea: it was so disappointing. Those episodes with the soldiers in season 1 were amazing because I wanted to know why and how the military/government collapsed. I wanted to see how people rationalised and dealt with the outbreak before it completely destroyed society. Instead it just was one disappointment to the next. I stuck around only for John but gave up with this current season and didn't bother because it just adopted all the tropes and boring storylines of the main series. It took what made it unique: this is the beginning of the outbreak and threw it out the window.

You are pretty much spot on with all of this. I was a staunch defender of Fear the Walking Dead since it started. It wasn't great but the show slowly gained its footing and, as you say, felt fairly accomplished after season 3. I was actually pretty excited by the news that Morgan was going to join FTWD since he was probably my favorite character on TWD at that time. And I thought season 4 of FTWD was actually decent. The crossover mostly worked (for me) from a story perspective and I admired AMC's attempt at creating a cohesive Walking Dead extended TV universe. But season 5 of FTWD was utter trash. Honestly, one of the worst and most misguided seasons of TV I've ever sat through. Most shows that bad I would never stick with, but as a fan of the show since it's first season I wanted to see it through. And, unfortunately, the show has never recovered and has been aimless claptrap ever since. It's too bad because, as I said, I thought AMC's attempt at creating a TWD TV universe was a worthwhile goal if done right. It's too bad that AMC has completely fumbled everything with their TWD universe. The main show is not good and hasn't been for awhile, while FTWD and the new World Beyond show are truly awful. Makes me wonder whether a successful TWD extended TV universe is even possible? My answer to that is that with the right creative team it is definitely possible. And more importantly, IT'S STILL NOT TOO LATE! Unfortunately, AMC clearly has no clue as how to make these shows interesting. I think going forward that season 5 of FTWD can probably be studied in film schools as a prime example of what NOT to do when developing a TV show.

Madison was by the far the best character. They spent three seasons building up her character, and the third season was brilliant - easily the best in the series. Then they basically killed her off screen and the show took a huge change in tone. The family the show was based on are all dead apart from Alicia, and they introduced a bunch of boring main characters and villains. Madison and Troy made season three, and they just got rid of them so they could make TWD-lite.

I think it would be awesome if Virginia's group gets killed off by the Proctors within the first few episodes. Then, it could be revealed that the Proctors have been holding Madison hostage this whole time. Shortly after that, Crazy Dog, Walker, Pickaxe Lady, and Tobias could resurface, and save the day. That, imo, would be a great way to get Fear back on the right track.

I loved the Clark family, and thier overall arc from season 1 to season 3. Because we see how they go from your average day people on the early onset of the apocalypse, and then adapting throughout the next parts of it. We see them travel from LA to Mexico and Texas encountering different cultures and people as they go. It made TWD universe quiet grounded, as there characters were quiet relatable. They weren't cops or survivalist types like Rick, Shane or Abraham. And if the story angle was that they'd eventually become the Whisperer's and eventually crossover with Ricks group, that would've been awesome too! Because the hints were there, Nick was already "walking with the dead" and immersed in communities that had a different outlook on Walkers and the overall apocalypse. Travis went from a mild mannered father and husband, to utter beast mode, beating men to death with his bare hands (avenging his son) and taking out a herd in a fighting pit (hinting at probably becoming a Beta like figure). Madison had strong maternal instincts and would do anything to protect her kids. It wouldn't be hard to picture her character becoming Alpha and a ruthless leader. And in a way this transformation / arc would be justified, because when good people are constantly faced with life and death, tragedy, loss and fear, they don't always end up like Rick or the Alexandrians. And Madison's family endured and seen so much, FTWD could've been the breaking bad of the walking dead.
@trashxraccoon03

Seeing as the actor of Nick wanted to leave I can understand why they killed him off but the way they did it and the timing were just ridiculous and stupid. Killing Madison in the same Season? Why? What was the idea behind that? I will never understand ... But what I get even less is why push Alicia's characters to the side after doing it? This show was about her family and watching her deal with the loss and being the only one left could have been a really interesting storyline, and the next logical step would have been to push her to be the main character. I would have loved to see her maybe go down a dark path killing charlie and just going into full survivor mode. Morgan could have been incorporated into this so well since he went down a dark path after losing his son. I think what many people don't seem to know is that a big chunk of fear-twd watchers are Alycia Debnam-Carey Fans and making her the main focus of the show could possibly attract even more of her fans to watch the show. I've stopped watching after season 4 but the few chunks i saw of season 5 were horrible and boring. At this point, I'm just praying for the show to get canceled.
