The U.S. Army, under the command of General Patton's Third Army, faced a daunting task. The Germans utilized the citadel and surrounding fortifications to mount a stubborn resistance, leveraging the dense urban environment to their advantage.
The American strategy involved a combination of artillery bombardments, aerial strikes, and ground assaults. The intensity of the bombardment was such that much of the historic city, including the ancient citadel, suffered extensive damage. The use of incendiary bombs led to fires that engulfed many of the wooden structures within the city's walls. Despite the ferocity of the Allied attacks, German forces held out for several weeks, demonstrating the difficulty of dislodging entrenched defenders in urban warfare.
