Germany lost its colonies during the First World War. World War One made Germany lost its colonial empire. After the Treaty of Versailles (1919) is was made official: England, France, Belgium and Japan took over Germany's colonial territories. The German colonial empire was no more.
The German colonial empire started at the end of the 19th century which is also known as the era of modern imperialism. Germany was a latecomer when it came down to this, because Germany was united in 1871. Otto von Bismarck organized the Berlin Conference of 1884-85 which led to the Scramble for Africa where European nations divided the African continent for large scale colonization. German East Africa and South West Africa (Deutsch-Südwestafrika) was the two largest German colonies in Africa. In Asia they established German New Guinea and took over several islands in the Pacific.
When the First World War broke out the German colonial army (Schutztruppen) was in the minority. The German colonies in Asia were taken over the troops from the British Empire and Japanese. One significant battle was the Siege of Tsingtao (1914). The heaviest fighting of World War One outside Europe took place on the African continent. The First World War in Africa was fought on different places. German South West Africa was invaded from British South Africa and eventually taken over. During the Togo and Cameroon Campaign (Kamerun Campaign) also these colonies fell in allied hands.
The East African Campaign (WW1) saw the rise of German commander Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. He started an offense against the neighboring colonies. The allies launched their offensive in German East Africa in 1916. Von Lettow-Vorbeck retreated and fought with his askaris a merciless guerrilla campaign. The troops of Von Lettow-Vorbeck held it out until the end of the First World War.

Some 35 years ago I read the book of Lettow Vorbeck from the library of the "Universitaet der Bundeswehr". It was written in Suetterlin the old German letters. It gave an impression of the feelings of that time...."unsere tapferen mohren", "freudig krachten unsere Gewehre und donnerten unsere Kanonen", "die weissen Menschen und die Mohren". It is really not in line with todays pc. Thus it was already in the basement of the library and is most probably already burned due to its political incorrectness. Lettow-Vorbeck had never more than 12 - 15.000 men under arms but regularly recruited new "Askaris" local soldiers. The equipment was at the beginning of the campaign totally outdated. They mainly used the Gewehr 71 (rifle, black powder dating back to 1871!). Later it consisted of captured allied weapons. The message from the author that Lettow Vorbecks men caused losses of up to millions in the civilian population does not sound realistic. If a few 1000 men are living in and from a country with a population of several millions it should not cause a severe problem. If the allied forces of several 100.000 men did live as well from the country (what the author did not mention!) it could have such an effect.

Good comment. You're absolutely right. Some more points: The Allies didn't start their offences in 1916 under Smuts but in 1914 when they tried to invade at Tanga, where they got themselves a bloody nose! Lettow-Vorbeck might have been racist if you call nowadays standards, but that's not fair, isn't it. On the other hand Lettow had a lot of respect towards the African people ("They are not as evolved as we Europeans but they can learn and reach our point of Evolution if we teach them"). His Askari Soldiers could advance to be junior Officers unlike in the allied armies. And they felt to be real German Soldiers themselves and respected and loved their Commander von Lettow: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CuM8AxJTpbo.html

Rookie RU-vidr it was more than just the Caroline islands it was all of Micronesia including now-separate countries like Palau, Nauru, etc. All of these later became American possessions before eventually gaining independence separately.

German influence in Kpando remained after the war, in the form of schools, hospitals, churches, etc. Many Ewes wanted the Germans to remain as a bulwark against the Ashante threat, which was linked to the British. I read one book which stated that local Ewe leaders had banners with swastika symbols at one point.

Well History Hustle, you are obviously not German, and I'm guessing you are British. Here is a thought, instead of concentrating on the 'Bad Germans', why don't you per example look at what the British did to the Aboriginals of Australia. A much not ever discussed topic, and an issue that the British rather not mention EVER. I am German, and I am sick and tired of the way my people are constantly portraited like they are the vilest of people, while the British per example, have created more harm worldwide like no other nation. I think it is time that the British acknowledge their ugly past, and deal with their shame, instead of talking about ALL the others, which is a way of deflecting from their own shameful past. It is a kind of psychological manipulation, and a form narcissism, whereby the attacker is always right, because he can predict reaction.

I am Dutch and not portraying the Germans as the vilest people. And before you start, yes, the Dutch were terrible too. Ask the people from Indonesia and the West Indies...
@christastempel5577
@christastempel5577 3 года назад
@@HistoryHustle, yes I realised that you are Dutch when I saw your second video. I actually think that the Dutch are really great people, and they don't deserve to be blamed for the shit some of their people did in the past. I generally think that people need to separate what some people did in the name of a country in the past, and get rid of the burden of guilt, because it doesn't do any good to anybody. In your second video I already mentioned that I lived and studied in Indonesia for two years, and no, I never heard anybody say that the Dutch were 'terrible'.

@@christastempel5577 Sorry, the Germans win the Gold medal for vileness with the Japanese close with a silver one. And no, I am not British. You are trying to deflect what should be your own considerable shame and guilt. Accept it and you may sleep better.
