Sleeping Beauty Overture by Tchaikovsky and Sleeping Beauty, the animated film, by Disney
Uranus from The Planets by Gustav Holst, performed by the Illinois Brass Band
Some criticisms I couldn't find a good place for but I wanted to include:
- The Fall of the House of Usher uses the offscreen assault and murder of an unnamed Inuk woman as part of the backstory for a white man, while using the Inuktitut word Inuit, which refers to multiple people, and mispronouncing it as well. This is of course incredibly distasteful to even include this haphazardly but also shows they didn't even do the research on it.
- The show's treatment of Usher's first wife, Annabel Lee, depicts her as an impossible standard of virtue and morals, idolizing her, and then implies she kills herself off-screen, which I also found distasteful.
- The show depicts Verna as the reason Mark Zuckerberg is successful. Look, I'm not at all going to defend any of Mark Zuckerberg's many unethical actions, but the implication that he owes his success to a deal with a demon is rather tone-deaf, and comparing him actual war criminals seems like overreacting.
- One of the speeches says we could solve world issues if we didn't spend so much money on TV, but who is making this TV, exactly?
- The show declares that domestic cats are apex predators, which isn't even close to correct. There are several animals around the world that eat invasive cats, including but not limited to larger felids, coyotes, wolves, bears, otters, hawks, eagles, and even raccoons. An animal being good at killing and eating other animals does not make them an apex predator. It just makes them a predator.

22:30 mannn this is such a pet peeve of mine in Flanagan's shows, the masturbatory melodramatic self-insert monologues. The actors do a fine job with what they're given but I just think about Flanagan coming up with his favourite zingers in the shower

@robinlydian4452 I think his writing could be decent if he wasn’t so busy trying to make it *amazing* so hard.

Okay, it wasn't my favorite, but there's one thing about the half siblings I think was missed. Regardless of their background and sexual orientations, the main thing is that they had been living in the real world BEFORE they were brought into the Usher family proper. They had for varying amounts of time been raised by their mothers in a more normal-ish, common sort of situation, and were eventually found and brought into the corrupt, greedy, entitled, power hungry, self-important dynamics of that family. So I think the point--though clumsily done--was more about being corrupted by being brought into the family. Even them being all queer doesn't mean they were always going to be perverts before being brought into the family. Apologies if this is not totally concise--but I agreed with most of the rest of your review.

Thank you so much for this video! I was beginning to think I was crazy! I love Shirley Jackson so I was looking forward to the Haunting of Hill House. I liked the premise of Oculus even if I thought the characters were dumb. So I was cautiously open minded. I was so bored. I was bored with Gerald's Game. I couldn't finish Hill House. I tried Bly Manor and that one actually made me mad enough I dipped out. I've been avoiding the rest of his stuff since. Okay, just not for me. But I am actually irritated at the mental gymnastics people are pulling with saying these are excellent queer stories when he literally buries his gays. There is also the argument to be made that he contributes to negative racial expressions by basically continuing to torture his one black female character in all his works. I don't think Flanagan is a bigot. But I do think he is surrounded by too many sycophants to grow or hone what talent could be there.

one of my biggest issues with the show is it simultaneously feels like it wants to be new interpretations of these stories but it can't help but do the "LOOK LOOK! IT'S LIKE IN THE STORY!!!" thing the only thing similar about the rue morgue episode is that the girl was killed by an ape. it's a "look we referenced the book!" over a "look we retold the story!" thing

@avalecto When I saw there was an episode called Goldbug, I expected it to resemble Goldbug in at least some fashion instead of resembling William Wilson a little.

I think alot of you guys are stretching with they antigay thing, that is not the point, but thats why its art. If you are insulted by it, okay. But you can say its you opinion because it wasn't the intention.
@MothsAudioandVideos
@MothsAudioandVideos 9 дней назад
@Dr.k0ckersmd Well, sure, it’s my opinion. If I was giving objective information about the show I’d talk about run time and aspect ratios, but I’m talking about how I reacted to the show. Given there wasn’t a message before the first scene detailing Flanagan’s intentions, I don’t think they have as much of a bearing on the art itself after it is released, but I fully agree that it was not his intention to be homophobic.
@Dr.k0ckersmd
@Dr.k0ckersmd 9 дней назад
@@MothsAudioandVideos the point is the amount of stretch for that opinion, I'm glad you watched the show and I'm glad you got different feelings, but to bring up that particular opinion is basing it off of an intention, which is a slippery slope and dangerous. It causes problems and arguments that didn't need to come up.
@MothsAudioandVideos
@MothsAudioandVideos 9 дней назад
@Dr.k0ckersmd I think I understand your point, but my distaste with a product is not directly proportional to the intention of the creator. If I said anywhere in my video something about what Flanagan intended, please let me know. However, regardless of intentions, we have the final product as it was released, and to have an opinion on the content of the final product does not require me to guess or suggest what his intentions were.
@Dr.k0ckersmd
@Dr.k0ckersmd 8 дней назад
@@MothsAudioandVideos when you place an opinion as someone with influence, it has intention. Which isn't what I said you did, I said it can happen, people can take it that way. It's in the comments. I don't have a platform so my opinion comes from you and what's in your comment section. I said a slippery slope because I read some people who feel like that is so, I simply know that having a defence in media is common with minorities and lgbtq2+ and it can put a shield over eyes

Helo :) i think u misunderstood a lil bit. The monologues are supposed to be annoying, its the biggest fault the main character has. A main character is allowed to have faults (take bojack for example). The lemonade scene was imo genius, because thats exactly the annoying shit i could hear from any narcissistic boomer. The main character IS a narcissistic boomer. idk how to make this more simple
@firebreatha
@firebreatha 19 дней назад
Also no one in the show liked his monologues except himself, which also just adds more to my point
@MothsAudioandVideos
@MothsAudioandVideos 19 дней назад
@firebreatha I think you misunderstood my point a little as well. My problem with the monologues in the show is not that they’re out of character, that they show how Roderick is a flawed character (he’s pure evil, after all) or that they are narcissistic. I singled out that monologue because I found it the most grating, but my problem is not confined to Roderick’s ramblings. All of these characters make monologues, almost constantly, and so often it goes against the theme of the scene, suspends all momentum, or makes no sense for the other characters to listen to the monologue quietly like obedient children. As you say, other characters dislike the monologue. Then why do they always sit and listen until he finishes? The other reason I dislike them is subjective, but I just find them boring.
@firebreatha
@firebreatha 19 дней назад
@MothsAudioandVideos did not come here to argue, but to offer my point of view :) so i hope you take it that way ♡ The children are also flawed and can have the same flaws, especially when their main influence in life is the one that gives them money. The "demon" lady didn't monologue imo, more like offered opinions, which was refreshing for the demon to have a hero complex Also the wife had the only real dialogue, the scene where she breaks down one of the girls(the gwyneth palthrow character) prejudice and reality is also the reason i think she says "fuck it" in the end (otherwise i think it wouldve not been earned) The wife is our point of view (i think) however slight it might be(which i think also stands in the real world)
