The Service Rifle has always been my favorite gun in NV for two reasons: 1. The sound of a fire team of Troopers all firing at the same time is engrained in my mind. 2. They represent something unique in the Wasteland; they’re newly mass-produced weapons purpose built for a major faction. That’s some pre-war standards right there!

Remember my first playthrough, completely blind, when I first saw the Service Rifle on the back of a trooper. He was in a squad that was patrolling near some nightstalkers. Tried to lead the stalkers to them to get them killed so I can take the rifle, because I assumed it would be full auto. (This was long before I had an real knowledge of firearms, I assumed all rifles of that style were full auto) They didn't die, so I took out the patrol myself and then took said rifle which was at 10 % condition. Yeah, I reloaded that save real quick lol. Then I got a full condition Service Rifle from Ranger Jackson at the Mojave Outpost, with some Armor Piercing rounds and showed the Legion at Nipton why football equipment and spears are inferior.

A couple of veteran friends of mine make pretty solid arguments for replacing the three-round burst with a two-shot double tap. According to them, nine times out of ten, the third round is going hither and yon, while by training they're told to double tap anyway.

7:58 Long time small arms weapons repair guy here. The cam on the three round burst function of M16A2 and older M4s must be activated by firing. Swapping to burst from safe or semi will always get you a single shot before a burst function. Emptying a magazine on the burst function merely causes the next slot of the burst function to take place. If you run out of ammo on round one of a burst, the rifle will fire two shots of a burst after replacing the magazine, but three on the next trigger pull as long as it is still on burst mode. It also gets a little funky switching between single and burst. Sometimes single won't work correctly after going to single from burst and may require you to charge the rifle again, ejecting a perfectly good round in the process.

As I understand it, the three-round limiter is a little 6-toothed ratchet inside the fire control group, with every 3rd tooth being longer than the rest. Hence, 3-round burst. But if you have only 2 rounds in the magazine and fire a burst, there's still 1 tooth in the 'burst' left to go. Something something 20-round magazine not divisible by 3.

The Writings on this gun are from the (pre-war) Survivalist Rifle from the Honest Hearts DLC, NCR service rifles are produced by the Gun Runners using pre war schematics. The NCR has developed to the point where it doesn't need to scavenge pre war weapon caches, that's to say even if there are any left that haven't been picked clean.

My understanding is that the 3-round burst has a "memory" as to where if you've shot one or two rounds (whether on semiauto, or you didn't hold the trigger long enough to let all three rounds go), it will only shoot two or one respectively.

His reaction to the Mojave Deathclaws is quite genuine. They are scary if you weren't prepared.

Correct me if I'm wrong. What likely happened with the Whiteclaw test is that if you use 3 round burst with a 20 round mag, the final burst will only fire 2 rounds leaving the limiter in position to fire the 3rd round out of the fresh mag resulting in the single round burst at 7:35. Thank you for joining my autism ted talk.

For those curious, the M-16 burst mechanism is a rotating ratchet. That means that the ratchet rotates after every round fired, whether in semi or burst. This is what causes the first burst to be 1-3 rounds, depending on ratchet positioning. After the first "burst", it will always fire 3 rounds unless it jams, runs out of ammo, or is switched to semi and fired. That will result in another burst that can be 1-3 rounds next time on burst. I've been told you can also feel the ratchet give different trigger pull weights, 2 lighter ones and 1 (slightly) heavier.

7:58 unless it's controlled by electronics a mechanical 3 round burst would never work 100% of the time. Shooting 2 rounds in semi then swapping to burst means you're drain the mag w/ the ratchet engaged with 2 rounds remaining before the lock. So your next mag starts with a 2 round burst, and you can keep doing this plotting the failures perfectly. Now an electronic control would be the way, but it would need a mechanical fail safe in 2 ways. #1 it needs to fire mechanically no matter what, the weapon cannot become a club because a battery died. #2 You'd need some form of runaway protection and the trigger would have to stay mechanical completely. This design would mean all you really need is a solenoid with an actuator that pulses the 3 rounds and like a calculator cpu to count the rounds and moderate the entire system. So 1.5Lbs of added weight and an unknown additional size to some part of the trigger assembly housing.

So for firearms nerds: Why the 3 round burst sometimes doesn’t do the full three rounds is because the cam that controls it is actuated with each hammer release (even when it’s in semi). The cam has 6 teeth, two of which are longer than each other and on opposite sides. So if you start a burst on any tooth other than the long one you’ll burst until the long tooth catches. So the first burst is dependent on which tooth your on, following bursts (so long as you hold the trigger down for all three rounds and don’t use it in semi again) will fire all three rounds.

That opening made me realize just how much damage you could do by making dodgy stimpaks and leaving them around the wasteland.

Hey, that's my engraving! I designed that rifle in 2017! I made the reddit post with spreadsheet breakdown and a youtube video of the first shots.

That deathclaw in the intro obviously escaped out of the cave system at desperado ranch. Matt’s unleashed a demon.

A few points: A) Love the rifle and your dedication to the intro. B) I think your wacky burst setting behavior is due to the fact the AR burst mechanism is, frankly, bad. There's no reset so when you use say a 20 round magazine with 3 round burst, well 3 doesn't go into 20 evenly. So if you run out the mag without completing the burst, well the burst will complete on the next mag even if that means only 1 round. C) A New Vegas themed video and no Marty Robbins music or you singing one of the memes? You were this close to greatness.

New Vegas was a great game, but... The OG Fallout and Fallout 2 are still my favorites. There's just something about making called shots to the nuts that is immensely satisfying.

I love it when things go full circle. The service rifle is a clearly inspired by the m16, then the game got so popular that you made a clone of the games copy of the original. Amazing work, I'd love to own one myself. I actually just shot an AR for the first time as a 27 year old that's always been into guns. Can't wait to build/buy one myself!

The ratchet doesn't reset the burst count when you let go of the trigger. So if you put it in burst, fire two shots and release before the third, the next time you pull the trigger it'll only fire one. This also goes between reloads. You get six 3 round bursts in a 20 round mag, plus 2 extra awkward rounds that mess up your burst. It's an AR thing. At least, this is what I learned in basic.

It's cursed when you realize that the Service Rifle in New Vegas doesn't have a "T" charging handle, the dust cover flips upwards, and the charging handle is _on the bolt group, sticking out from ejection._ The longer you look at the actual gun model from the game, the worse it gets...

in the old TTRPG Twilight 2000 that a lot of us played back in the 80s (post-nuclear war RPG where you're a military unit trying to get out of Poland and back to the last ships returning to the US, for those unfamiliar with it) there were AR-style rifle kits air-dropped across the US to various militia groups trying to maintain order in their communities as the federal presence was largely crippled and withdrawn to specific enclaves. Those kits were like the British "Defense Gun" sten knock-offs in that they were bare-bones, and the militia members made wooden furniture for them to make them usable. Over the long winters (made worse by WWIII nuking the crap out of half the planet) they would carve the furniture with various designs like the old 19th century hunting rifles and shotguns used to have, turning them into works of art that often became heirlooms. The service rifle reminds me a LOT of those militia rifles from that game :)

Fun fact: the Big Boy from Fallout is based off of the Davy Crockett. The Davy Crocket was developed and scrapped in the Cold War. The reason why it was scrapped was because the launcher couldn't launch nukes far enough to keep the soldiers out of range of the fallout. So any unit who used it would also get an almost lethal level of radiation. The Big Boy is basically the most op weapon in the game
