"Shady Sands was always rocky, always on the brink." They had paved roads and running water. They had trade routes with every other community in California. The main issue with the NCR in New Vegas was their need to expand so that their territory could contain their infrastructure, while they were expanding north, south, and east. They were undeniably a relative superpower. They were an actual nation state.

They were having massive energy problems and overpopulation problems in New Vegas, and were barely holding out in Baja. They were definitely better than most of the Wasteland, but they were not doing fantastic. They expanded way too quickly, and every president after Tandy was horrible. That's the point, the NCR could have been destroyed easily by a myriad of problems both internal and external if they wanted their stupid dieselpunk western to go on, but they did it the worst way possible.
@Slender_Man_186

@TheBayzent the energy problems are true, but Baja California (which despite the name is in Mexico) is the very edge of their Southern boarder, and all we’re told about it is that the Veteran Rangers are “chasing ghosts” down there, we have no reason to believe that the Vet Rangers are performing poorly, quite the opposite all we’re told about the Veteran Rangers is that they’re the single most elite unite the NCR has.

"always on the brink" my brother in Christ they literally restarted and rebuilt many of the factories on the west coast and was an industrial power. They have fields and fields of cattle, farms, and water. They were most certainly rocky and shaky, but when you have a post-apocalyptic settlement turn into an industrial power, spanning many former states, then you know they have to be doing at least somewhat well.

I feel like one thing everyone misses in this conversation is that the NCR is basically Fallout’s equivalent to the New Republic in Star Wars, except actually worse. The New Republic is Luke, Han and Leia’s legacy, and Star Wars fans were understandably pissed when everything they accomplished was undone in TFA. The same is true in Fallout except YOU are Luke, the NCR was founded at the end of Fallout 1 as a direct result of the Player’s actions, but unlike the New Republic which doesn’t get elaborated on or explored we see the NCR grow, in Fallout 2 Shady Sands has a statue of the first game’s player character right in the center of the city and the Republic has a confirmed population of 700k, new buildings are going up, pre-war cars are being repaired, and new roads are being paved. By New Vegas they’ve annexed more cities and have had another 40 years of growth, it’s safe to say the NCR has a total of 1million citizens by that point, it’s existed for 100 years and has the following settlements under its control: Shady Sands itself, Boneyard which is home to the Followers of the Apocalypse University, Junktown and The Hub which are the two other founding members, Necropolis and Dayglow which are two entire Ghoul cities, Vault City and Arroyo which are GECK paradises, as well as Gecko, San Fran, San Diego, Redding, and New Reno And then this damn show comes in, it plops Shady Sands where Boneyard should be, off-screens it, acts like the several other cities within the NCR don’t even exist, and writes off the entire NCR as “it didn’t work out.” Even just the idea that Shady Sands itself only had 35k residents is laughable, but what this show does is a slap in the face to the fans.

What I find massively dishonest here is Jim claiming that fans are upset because they don't want the writers to develop a story and want everything to stay as it is. When the number one criticism of Bethesda has been that they don't let the setting grow and develop, but always reset everything back to start. The nuking of Shady Sands is not bad, because it changes the NCR, it is bad because it erases the NCR, as if it never happened.

Personally I believe the reason why shows like Fallout get praises isn't just key jangling references towards the games. I think its simply the fact that people's standards for good media have eroded due to the abundances of slop that is being released throughout the years. So when we see something that is somewhat good/average at best we praise it and put it on a high pedestal which last for a couple of months or years until people look back criticize the piece of media of not being up to par on how people viewed it upon release (good example of this and the show would be the Force Awakens). Some shows will be looked back and will age like either fine wine or milk. The fallout TV show with all the praises it has received over the past couple of weeks will age like milk over the coming months or years when people look back in retrospective.

I presume it also has a lot to do with a new generation of fans who's first fallout game was Fallout 4. They may appreciate FNV or they can talk shit about it, since it's trendy now apparently, but their first nostalgic impression will always be Fallout 4 in all its glory.

Personally, I'd pin the blame on the way people consume media now. The increased accessibility of media, while convenient, has decimated people's appreciation of it. TV shows, movies, and increasingly games, in the eyes of your average consumer, have become utterly disposable. A movie or TV show isn't something you have to make time to watch, nor can you really "miss" anything anymore. They've become something you just flick on whenever and binge in a night or two - usually while doing one or two other things. Things today only really seem to be measured by their ability to distract until the next new thing, not by their quality or long term persistence.

Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, and Fallout New Vegas all showed progressively more and more society as time went on. It was done really well. Bethesda can't write for shit. Edit: Whatever your opinions on the canon status of Tactics, I believe the world building in it to be interesting. It's cool to see a branch of the Brotherhood building themselves up to protect their neighbours. Obviously, they aren't purely altruistic: they take the best and turn them into soldiers for the Brotherhood. But I believe that it is the most development we have ever seen the Brotherhood have, and it is my favourite rendition of that faction.
@Slender_Man_186
@Slender_Man_186 4 месяца назад
@_Irrelevant eh get Tactics out of there, that game completely retconned the Brotherhood’s origin story, says that they somehow built airships to travel east, and built a whole empire in the American mid-west. If anything it’s more canon to the Bethesda games than it is to the Black Isles games, Captain Kells in Fallout 4 has dialogue that backs up the airships, and this show has a Brotherhood Elder say how they used to rule the wasteland.

Vault-Tec being evil cartoon villains is already a Bethesda retcon. The idea that they would be carrying out experiments in their vaults after nuclear holocaust was already a little outlandish and cartoonish, but this show just takes it 100x further and makes them self destructively evil. Also, Shady Sands was built from a vault and its G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), the idea that it’s a little backwater village 100 years after its founding is laughable. The G.E.C.K. was meant to be able to provide everything the vault dwellers need to rebuild a society. It is the _capital_ of the New California Republic, which had dominion over several states and are shown in New Vegas to actually be the new incarnation of the United States. They are expanding and people ‘back home’ in California have safety and security comparable to pre war levels during the events of New Vegas. They have a government, their own currency, and a standing army. That’s why New Vegas is widely regarded as set in a POST-post-apocalypse and why it’s so unique. It’s been over 200 years, society is actively rebuilding. There are obviously issues that come with trying to rebuild in a nuclear apocalypse, and that’s the entire point of the games. This show is a joke. I can see how non-Fallout fans can enjoy it, it seems like an interesting premise, but I can’t see anyone who is actually a fan of the games enjoying this nostalgia baiting bs.

Tim Cain said in an interview back then that the Vault's purpose was very different from the stated one, being basically experiments directed by the Conspiracy (proto Enclave) to create a multigeneration ship and save America in Space, so they've been evil since Fallout 2, at least in conception. What they weren't was in charge or in control of the nukes, let alone the first ones to drop them, especially because it wouldn't make any sense for them to do so by 2077, with America utterly crushing China in the mainland.
@DominionSorcerer
@DominionSorcerer 4 месяца назад
Interplay Entertainment's Fallout 3 was going to confirm Vault-Tec launched the first nuke before it was scrapped, as was the planned Fallout Online. The first references to vaults being part of a series of experiments is in Fallout 2, feeding information to the Enclave as part of the societal preservation program. Furthermore the Fallout Bible says Tim Cain came up with the idea of most of the vaults being some kind of experiments, with not even the Enclave being aware of _whose_ idea it was in-universe. The NCR is also expanded, but they've hit a deadlock. They have been in the Mojave for half a century with no real progress being made, they're losing hundreds of troopers in the Mojave alone each day and have to sink massive amounts of money into the pacification campaign, the campaign itself is incredibly unpopular amongst both the civies back home and the soldiers at the front. It has caused the NCR to enter a state of decline, slowly but surely. That currency was also massively devalued because the Brotherhood raided the gold mines the NCR backed their currency with, to the point that the NCR had to stop minting gold coins and ultimately replace the gold standard with fiat currency. Far from being an example of how well off the NCR is, their dollar is so inflated it is worth 10% of a Legion Denarius. The Hub, one of the NCR's wealthiest states and most important trading hubs, even reintroduced bottle caps as a main currency because the people lost faith in the dollar. The NCR's is also still home to raiders, brigands and bandits. We are told as much in New Vegas, with there being traders that flat out prefer trading in Legion territory because the Legion successfully wiped raiders out in their territory.

Shady Sands wasn't the closest to thriving, it WAS thriving. It was a new nation heading towards the peak of its power and influence. NCR is the new United States in Fallout, so even bombing the capital wouldn't have wiped it out entirely. Hell, the Legion TRIED something like that before, with Camp Searchlight, setting off a heavily irradiating bomb inside of the town to take it away as a resource and strong point for the NCR. NCR wouldn't even lose all of its political influence if the capital was bombed, they have ambassadors and other representatives in other regions who would be the next in the chain of command. I mean, where's Dennis Crocker? What about the Vice President, they had Frank Carlson in Fallout 2, so someone must be in that role. The NCR wouldn't be gone, they'd be rallying after an attack like that, and by the time Lucy got out, they'd have bolstered their military forces to defend against another surprise attack, I mean, look at what happened in real life after the attacks in New York and the Pentagon. There's just a massive misunderstanding of what the NCR is, it's not small, it's not disorganized and despite being spread out too much in the Mojave, at its core it isn't weak. Also, most of these non-points break down to one basic idea that was dumb when it was made for Star Wars, dumb when it was made for Star Trek, dumb when it was made for Doctor Who and Terminator, but for some reason they keep going back to it as some kind of defense for this crap writing and inconsistency. "Do you want lore accurate or a good story", as though you cannot have BOTH, it must be one or the other. It was a bad argument the first time, it's still a bad argument now. You can have a good story that is ALSO consistent with the lore and it shouldn't - be - that - hard. The problem always boils down to, you want what YOU want and that's all the matters. It's selfish writing and doesn't have any regard for the audience, especially if that audience are fans of the IP previous to your involvement in it. Stop being selfish assholes, get some talent and write a story that's good and consistent with what's established in the IP. This isn't difficult, novelists have done this for years with popular franchises.

@Vaelosh466 i’m not sure I’d even count the BoS war against the NCR, from what we can tell the NCR was willing to recognize the BoS as a legitimate faction that can exist alongside and within the NCR, similar to how they viewed the Followers of the Apocalypse in Boneyard. One of the states within the NCR, the one Lost Hills is located in, is even named “Maxson“ as in Roger Maxson, the founder of the BoS, the BoS war is essentially a civil war. As far as we can tell, the BoS likely instigated the war over ideological differences, specifically with the BoS seeing the NCR as the exact type of government that would abuse technology just like the pre-war governments, in NV it’s brought up time and time again how the NCR is recreating the problems of the old world.

Not to mention New Vegas blows Jimmy's concept of attacking this beacon of hope out of the water with the fact that it does critique it. I, a Georgia native, would’ve liked to see the post-apocalyptic South. Imagine Atlanta, or even further south to Savannah and Augusta, or further into Florida and it’s swamplands

They apparently wanted to go for a Wild West theme, that would’ve made Texas the prime location to set the show, the only game you’d be contradicting is Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, and that game blew so hard it nearly killed the franchise and Interplay, led to it being sold to Bethesda, and is the reason Fallout 76 is only considered the second worst in the franchise.

The sad truth is that most people don't actually care about adaptations actually adapting content. To your casual fan or normie, they just watch the show to scratch that itch, if it's funny or action packed and the plot is decent enough to carry it to the end, they'll eat it up. These adaptations aren't made for fans of the product, they're sprinkled in with enough references to make people Leo Decaprio point at the screen a few times but they're ultimately made for the Modern Audience. If it's funny enough, written decent enough or the actions fun to watch, then it becomes popular and all the bastardization of the characters/plot/setting doesn't matter because it wasn't made for you. And worse if the show is actually fairly well made, it means that it falls even more on deaf ears, like Arcane's massive changes to lore and characters that people gloss over because the show is good. Netflix Castelvania managed to hook enough people until the feces piled up to much that the smell was noticeable in the later seasons. Then they made the even more bastardized version of Nocturne where they race swapped an important character just to insert "muh slavery" storyline which means that the raceswapped character isn't even the same character anymore. The general populace aka the normies are the biggest threat to any property because their wallets speak louder than your voice.

Jim must have only played the NCR campaign in fallout. References to the NCR being stretched thin are about them deploying soldiers across the wasteland to colonize. Their war against the Legion and claiming New Vegas was basically their Afghanistan. In the Mr House ending, Mr House brings asks the player to stop the assassination of the NCR leader. He does this because even if the NCR is defeated at Hoover Dam they can still make a comeback because everything is fine in their home turf. Mr House planned on create a isolationist sentiment in the NCR so they would leave New Vegas alone after their failure. Even if the Legion ending is the canon ending they can only go so far west without facing the true wrath of the NCR.

If they really wanted to destroy the NCR, rather than nuking Shady Sands, you just can have it continue on the path New Vegas set forth. Splintering apart into many subfactions and devolving into civil war. Civil war would be a far better hook than just nuking one town and suddenly the entire NCR dies despite them having huge forces and central town hubs everywhere else. The forces down in Baja could come into play, and no matter what outcome New Vegas had, with the civil war their already stretched man power would snap and they’d need to either retreat from Hoover Dam or have the forces there be its own faction of the NCR in a civil war.

The guy they show Maximus seeing clearly has an East Coast BoS crest on his T-60, which is east coast armor too. 2277 is also the year Fallout 3 was set.
