Pat Leeman I don’t think it’s a matter of being too loud to hear everybody. I think it’s a matter of everybody feeling like what they have to say is so important that they NEED to be heard. The reality is most of us don’t need our opinions heard.
People only care about the spectacular dead. Not the dying, or the ones who go quietly. A celebrity dies and the world mourns. Hundreds of people die each day. No one bats an eye.
Tacotikki in the grand scheme of things they really don't. this isn't the first mass shooting and their have been far worse ones. The sympathy for most people only extends to posting a tweet if that. most people aren't gonna vote anyone out of office or even do a protest, all of a sudden everyone is occupied that specific day . When of comes time to vote half the people already forgot about it, the other half don't care enough to vote against the "guilty" politician. People always want someone else to do something, its like when someone gets hurt infront of a massive crowd and nobody calls 911.

And don’t give me some gun control bullshit, there’s more guns in Texas then there are people and they’re not just gonna return them.
It was a heartless thing to write... it’s like writing “in WW 2, the Jews were only 12% of the total number of dead so let’s keep things in perspective”. Or “ a comedian has a greater chance of being killed by tap water than being murdered in his sleep by his wife”.

@@tutoring6208 Thanks for correcting me. I had no idea. I've just done a bit of googling and found that it seems to have originated from an article in the Washington post that claims that Stalin interrupted a speech to express that sentiment as a retort, but it was worded in the article quite a bit differently to the way it is usually phrased now. So at the very least, my wording is inaccurate.

Removing your empathy does not make you a better scientist not having empathy is the trait of a psycho in this post neil stated that essentially because there is other forms of death which cause more deaths doesn’t invalidate or make this a “media spectacle” 34 people’s lives taken at the hands of a sicko lunatic, 34 lives lost to one man desensitising yourself to that by saying death happens all the time is stupid imagine if it was your friend or family
I agree that people overreacted and some people get offended by anything. However, Niel's tweet was stupid. If his wife was one of the people killed in Walmart do you think me sending him a tweet like that will comfort him? Of course not. Medical malpractice, auto accidents and sickness are not dealing with the same issue as intentional terrorist activity, even though the result is dead people. Plus the number of mass shootings keeps increasing which is a problem because "mass shootings" 20 years ago was not an issue or category we would be discussing. Medical malpractice, auto accidents, homicide and suicide ect.. have been issues for years. Finally, the other categories are not as unpredictable as mass shootings which apparently can happen at anyplace at anytime, giving the population more anxiety regarding the issue. I understand Niel was attempting to comfort people and put things in perspective, I just think he kinda failed at that attempt. I do think it's the intent and thought that counts so I'm not angry at Niel and am still a huge fan of the guy. But looking at the tweet from a strictly intellectual point; I think it still misses the point, that's all.
You can at least argue that the timing was in poor taste. Data insertion is just that. But we're thinking humans in a society, sometimes a little empathy is in order.
Those other deaths degrasse mentions are no less painful to the friends and families. However they are all the result of illness, accidents or in the case of suicide self inflicted. Really not the same as a psycho shooting a bunch of innocent people and kids like in many mass shootings. He was way off base and very out of touch with comment. Neil has a tendency to enter an arrogant, know it all, douche mode from time to time, where he makes silly and unnecessary comments. This was one of those times he should have known better and kept his mouth shut, because his opinion wasn't going to be well received. FYI I'm Australian. We don't have gun violence here. Except bikies occasionally shooting each other which is honestly pretty rare. When these mass shootings happen in America everyone here just feels sad and angry that it's allowed to continue, with civilians having access to an unnecessary level of firepower. His tweet really outlines how people don’t actually care a lot about lost lives unless they’ve suffered horrifically at the hands of another fellow human.
There's a difference between car accidents, medical errors and someone gunning people down. Medical errors and car accidents are gong to happen, humans are fallible and not perfect. @bimmler Why are you being so obtuse? For example, If your father get's both feet cut off due to an accident or human error versus your sibling cutting off one of your fathers feet. Does the latter get more attention simply because more feet got cut off? Or do you focus on the abnormality of a sibling cutting off one foot? We can't control car accidents or medical error it's going to happen until a future where we automate but right now it's inevitability. Mass shootings are't an inevitability, they are cultural. In North Carolina it took 6 months for application to buy a pistol was even looked at. Also the state I live in won't sell me a 30 round magazine because I lived in California to recently. I think it's a bad tweet depending on how you interpret the last sentence. The last sentence can appear as if people shouldn't react to a terrorist attack emotionally. But I loved his apology, he obviously did not mean to belittle anyone emotions and came off very thoughtful and sincere.
I think it 'can appear' that way for the same reasons though.. because people put their emotions first and foremost. It's a statement about how people think too emotionally about some things, and people responded to it emotionally. It's often valid criticism. Why are you picking and choosing what you are emotional about? My opinion is that it is because you watch the media, and their job for the last decade was to make $$$$ off of your outrage, and they are good at it. Also, all in all, we're very susceptible to it. Media is leading most of us around by the nose happily and thoughtlessly. Media is blaming guns when most of these people had mental health issues which should be addressed... which is harder to access as a male... which most of the shooters are.
@@Hethalean definitely mental health issues are a problem all around in society. Especially when you look at the high number of combat vets dealing with PTSD, who end up as shooters. I see an ideological issue as well, when it comes to terrorism. Some mass shooters have been linked to hateful and extreme views. It's not always mental illness. Personally, I see it as a battle with many different fronts. There are various reasons why gun violence is so high. So we have to be willing to confront all of those reasons. Which includes easy access to guns, suicide by gun(a lot of men affected by this as you pointed out), and gang violence in urban areas - which is connected to socioeconomic struggles. Side note. I would love to see a free government program where you could turn your guns in fingerprint guns. That would help with accidental gun deaths of children.
Yeah buddy that was Stalin. Arguably the 3rd worst dictator of the entire human history. It's nice to know that so many American people agree with him on this.
The outraged response to Neil’s tweet actually confirmed his initial point. I think there's an issue of making death's relative to other deaths. For example: Going to a funeral, and telling a family member, "I'm so sorry for your loss. Published in September 2000 in the journal Pediatrics and titled, "Annual Summary of Vital Statistics: Trends in the Health of Americans During the 20th Century," linked here vaccinesafetycommission.org/pdfs/45-2000-Pediatrics-Vital-Statistics.pdf epidemiologists from both Johns Hopkins and the Centers for Disease Control reaffirmed what we had already learned from McKinlay and McKinlay: “Thus vaccination does not account for the impressive declines in mortality seen in the first half of the century...nearly 90% of the decline in infectious disease mortality among US children occurred before 1940, when few antibiotics or vaccine were available. "water treatment, food safety, organized solid waste disposal, and public education about hygienic practices." Also, "improvements in crowding in US cities" played a major role. Clean water. Safe food. Nutrition. Plumbing. Hygiene. These are the primary reasons humanity was saved. jbhandleyblog.com/home/2018/5/14/savehumanity This explains why so many diseases disappeared without a single vaccine like Scarlet Graver and Typhoid. Among other things this has resulted in the high suicide rate of soldiers from experimental vaccines. Do you really think Air Force support soldiers without any stress from combat have PTSD enough to kill themselves? Think about it people... Did you know many vaccines have encephalitis as a possible side effect? Did you also know that encephalitis has the same symptoms as Autism? Yep...... have you ever wondered why autoimmune diseases in childhood brain cancers have risen from ten to twenty thousand percent over the last couple decades? Now you have your answers......All those things increase healthcare/ big pharma owned profits. Similar to healthcare companies investing in fast food companies but harder to prove. Term limits are the beginning of the answer.
To be fair, 500 deaths due to medical errors in 48hrs while not technically inaccurate it's intellectually dishonest. It's accurate based on reports that have lumped many causes together and it's still disputed by experts.
Indiana gun shows won’t sell to a person that lives in Illinois due to the different and more strict gun laws, no dealer would risk their license and their freedom for one sale.
@@artvandelay3840 100% there would have been people offended at his tweet. But you also have another % of people who pretend to be offended at the tweet, as it makes them feel important.
@@6Dawso I guess the more important question is whether the tweet is actually offensive. I'd say yes for 3 reasons: 1) It doesn't hold logically, as it appears to be a false equivalency. 2) It's tactless and insensitive to refer to recent mass murders as "spectacle". Kind of a trivializing word. 3) It's coming from NGT, and people tend to think he's better than this.
STOP SAYING WHEN THERE IE SOME FORM OF CONTROVERSY THAT “he got in trouble” this makes them think they have power and control over what is correct and incorrect and also hold control over the punishment.
Well there’s two parts to an apology. Most people don’t remember the second part. Apologies: 1st part: Hart felt sorry for what you did. 2nd part: what are you going to do to make sure the actions taken are repaid and/or learned from so it won’t be repeated.
@@asyetundetermined D F I can see reading comprehension isn't your strong suit. Every political issue essentially has two sides as polar opposites. The powers that be on the left and right try to twist each issue into a talking point for an issue they have always wanted to change. In this case it's the rabid left that is beating the drum on this issue. The left wants to use mass shootings as a boogeyman to scare their base into making irrational decisions by taking one step closer to banning gun ownership, which is their real goal. You know who else wanted to ban guns? Hitler, Stalin, and Mao. The left is not in good company on this issue. When one of the sides is trying to exploit an issue for their own gains they don't properly put an issue into context. The goal is to scare everyone into overeating. They want people to believe that mass shootings are a larger issue than they actual are. Neil deGrasse Tyson was trying to present some facts that would put this issue in context so people wouldn't be so blindly scared. This would be like a plane about to take off with someone on board yelling that the plane is going to crash because planes crash all the time. This would scare the people on the plane that don't know the facts when it comes to plane crashes. In reality there is only a 1 in about 5,000 chance of dying in a plane crash in an entire lifetime. People aren't usually scared of dying in a car accident, but the chance is much higher at 1 in 84. In this analogy the man yelling the plane is going to crash is the left, the plane is the mass shooting issue, and Neil deGrasse Tyson would be the person telling them the odds of them dying in the plane or automobile to alleviate some of their unfounded fear. I didn't say anything about me being stirred into anything. That is a false narrative you made up in your head. My post talks about the people who have been hating on Neil's comments have been trying to stir up hate among their base, and they can't do that if he fights them with facts. I would say you are socially, emotionally, and intellectually retarded but that would be an insult to retards. Don't you know you should never go full retard?
Critical Mass You went into a psycho screed there that is so shoehorned and beside the point that I won’t deign to dignify it by reading it. Get well, brother.
@@asyetundetermined I win! Everyone else that reads this thread will see that you lost this argument because you don't have the metal aptitude to form a coherent argument for your position. I bet you read what I wrote and realized you couldn't make a case so you are pretending you didn't read it. In any case you are the loser in this argument, and with so many other aspects of your life.
Critical Mass Cool, but wiser folks will understand that some “battles” are not worth fighting, most specifically those which hold no relevance or stand to present any meaningful insight on the topic at hand. In short, one can’t lose a battle they have no interest in joining. Get well, brother.
Critical Mass You began harping on Left/Right political paradigms and I glanced and saw some policy speak as well. I wasn’t approaching this from that angle at all. So to the extent that you want to claim victory, for whatever that is worth, knock yourself out. I genuinely don’t care. Just understand that you are spiking the ball in the middle of an uncontested field. If you need that, take that. But since it appears you do, this is why I will continue to urge you to get well, brother, because that seems to me a glaring character weakness. Have a good one, pal. Feel free to reply, but I am done and won’t be reading personally. This thread is unrewarding.
Garett Crook that’s not how this works. You’d still have to go through your own states system to get the gun. And if you can’t legally get the gun within your own state, you can’t get it from another. Again, you have to be a resident of the state you buy from.
why do these people respond to the vocal minority? Apologizing simply encourages other people to be outraged about facts. Ignore em, as they should be.
i think you guys missed dG Tyson's main point, which I believe to be that media is using our emotion to manipulate our opinions. very valid point indeed and much, much respect to dGT for pointing that out.
