Great work here man-but I think the real winner here is the show itself. The format is flexible, but relatable-and each host has been able to connect with real people in their own way. Feud is authentic, and people know it

Any chance you could do an in-depth video/video series on "love connection"? That one was a heavyweight in syndication throughout the 80s until the mid 90s as well, which was followed by a short-lived second run in syndication in 1998/99, a proposed revival for syndication in 2015 which ultimately fell through and and approximately two year run on Fox from the summer of 2017 until the winter/spring of 2019. Another few suggestions for future videos… The US versions of "weakest link," who wants to be a millionaire" and the subsequent million dollar game show craze, the various runs of "Hollywood squares" and "match game," and, for a complete change of course (though I have no doubt you could pull this one off also,) the CBS prime time reality based show, "rescue 911".

9/11 happened at the start of Louie's final season and one thing that he doesn't get enough credit for is he was the one who had the idea of the cops vs firefighters tournament to raise money for 9/11 victims AND the first $5000 in the jackpot came from his pocket.

Just want to say, I watched this series from start to finish and I loved every second of it! You did an incredible job on this, touching upon every era and beautifully illustrating how deep the rabbit hole goes on this show. It's easy to just write this show off as having just kinda always been around but it's really so much more complicated than that. You helped me gain an appreciation for every host of the show too, even Steve Harvey who I am normally not a fan of. Also learned about some of the rougher aspects about some of the other hosts too like Richard Dawson and Ray Combs that I had never known before. Fantastic job! Definitely will be a regular viewer of yours after this!

Look, Steve Harvey is a great host, but I don’t watch it now because the questions just fish way too much for dirty answers to dirty survey questions. Also, a new wrinkle to the Anderson version was that if a family successfully got the steal on a question, they didn’t just get the points the other family had already put into the “bank” (for lack of a better term), they also got the additional points from a correct answer. Example: Family ‘A’ gets 87 points before getting their third strike. Family ‘B’ is given the obligatory chance to steal and does so, giving an answer worth 10 points. Instead of only being awarded 87 points, as would have happened in the versions from 1976-1995, the additional points were awarded, and the family got 97 points in this example. I always really liked that subtle little change.

The great thing about Feud, unlike a lot of game shows, is that you can watch a ton of episodes right here on RU-vid from every era of the show. Excellent job...it's times where I forget the current version's been on the air 23 years. It feels like there should've been a gap around 2008 or so, but nope...one continuous run. However, in that era between Richard Karn and Steve Harvey's first year or so, it felt like a generic daytime game show. Filler material. Taking advantage of social media and centering the show around Steve's humor was the best decision they made. I'm not a fan of the writing or the euphemisms on the survey board (i.e. Dong Sarong for Condom), but I respect the cultural relevance its had in the last decade. Night and day difference between 2022 and 2002 episodes.
@jpcompton
@jpcompton 2 года назад
Interesting series, thank you for producing it. What's overlooked in your praise of the current run is that its success depended on completely abandoning the good-hearted kernel at Family Feud's core. At the peak of the original run, Family Feud brought people in from all over the country. Families from tertiary media markets packed their Sunday best, got on a plane (for many, a rare or unique experience!), and competed in a setting where they knew they would have each other's backs and nothing terrible would happen to them. Yes, Dawson could be harsh at times, but his saltiest barbs were usually reserved for select outsized characters making multi-day appearances on ABC. Nobody on the original run had to be afraid to show weakness or fault. Dawson would even request the tiniest of strike sound effects if someone was clearly vapor-locked and struggling. The current run inverts that formula. "How *dare* these families have the *audacity* to come onto this television show and try to win money?" it asks. "We will be sure that, by time we're done with them, they've been taken down a peg or two." The seeds were there long before Harvey took over, of course. Combs would sometimes pick on someone just because he needed a stooge for a punchline, and families started taunting each other with strike sound effects and symbols. But it's a shame that the show's formula for ratings success was to embrace a jaded, cynical attitude. The show was at its best when it was a positive environment for ten people to play a good-hearted guessing game about what 100 people they'd never met might be thinking.

He insisted that he have the right to "tell it like it is": if an answer was stupid, everyone at home said so. So why not be their voice on stage? Gaby Johnson knew Steve's style, and knew if they wanted him as bad as they truly did, they'd have to be willing to trust him, even if "the ugly-sounding truth that got laughs" was what he'd say. She knew it was time to take risks for a big change, and she was proven right.

I never thought I'd get "choked up" watching a video about a game show, but I'm just at the right age where I grew up with Dawson and all iterations of this show...it's been a staple throughout my lifetime and to see the entire saga laid out like this was just amazing. It's rise back to the top with Harvey is almost a "fist pumping" moment in the evolution of TV game shows as a whole - and Harvey...well, it's him. Karn, Hurley were just not watchable eras. Harvey is magic and the show is every bit as entertaining as it was back in the Dawson era. Also. Bravo on the editing, pacing and assembly of this series. And you're presentation skills are in the upper echelon of the youtube universe. He appeared on every incarnation of the show, with Richard Dawson and Ray Combs, and he would make subsequent appearances during the Louie Anderson and Richard Karn eras. He also hosted the stage version of the show, Family Feud Live!, where I think, he is a better fit for this format than he was on the syndicated Price is Right in 1994-95.

It just felt weird and kinda stiff seeing Steve not be able to get up close and personal with the contestants (not in the Dawson kind of way lmao). The physicality of it was part of the humor and charm. Very overdue but still happy to hear :)

I actually love the more overly risqué direction the feud has gone in since Steve Harvey started hosting. I mean, come on; you can’t get much better than hearing 80-year-old grandparents, Sunday school teachers, church pastors etc. letting their freaky sides out. Any chance you could do an in-depth look into “Love Connection“?

It was funny when it came out more naturally in the earlier Harvey seasons. Now it's all set up and manufactured and just seems so forced. And then Steve mugs for an additional two minutes while he rings out all he can from the answers. Just gets annoying after a while.

Wow what an amazingly descriptive and detailed video, I really enjoyed this one. I was always a mediocre fan of the Feud, but this was going back to the 90's. After that decade, I kind of stopped caring, but it's very interesting to know that it's still going strong and I'm glad to see Steve still at the helm. Please make more videos like this, I love the attention to detail and thought you put into these.

Connor, I enjoyed your videos regarding the history of "Family Feud"! I think you can do a great job on doing something similar on the history of Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" from it's early Philadelphia years in 1952 up until the show went off the air in 1989!

Louie was underrated. I grew up with the animated series. Fox Kids back in the 90s was awesome! They had big names like Spider-Man, X-Men, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs. And then cartoons based on comedians like Bobby’s World and Life with Louie.

14:34 14:44 THIS, THIs, VERY THIS! The theme from this era was catchy, but it really felt ... out of place, and/or too radical a departure from previous versions, it really didn't feel very feud like. Glad the old theme came back... eventually.

Not only has Steve’s tenure outlasted Richard Dawson, but the current run of Feud has outlasted BOTH the original ABC daytime & 1976 syndicated versions ten times over and its clear from how successful it’s become that the show is no longer widely remembered as being Richard Dawsons- this is Steves show through and through. Whenever GSN would air older episodes of Feud, it would more times than not be classic Dawson episodes, with the occasional Richard Karn or John O’Hurley episode thrown in. I never knew about the 1980s reboot with Ray Combs or that Louie Anderson was brought on as host of the Fremantle reboot when it first aired (hell, I wasn’t even aware of the fact that the current version of Family Feud has been airing since I was 8 months old!). The episodes with Ray & Louie, for whatever reason, were long off the GSN schedule by the time I started watching TV regularly

I mean no disrespect to Steve Harvey. I think he's brilliant. One of the greatest stand-ups ever. But his version of FF, despite being popular, I think is abhorrent. Every single question is about sex, something sexual, or something that forces a sexual answer. And it's pure filth. This isn't a show you can watch with your parents anymore. And they try to pass this off as a family show.
@neetrab

The show became "raunchy" before Steve took over as host. That's why John O'Hurley chose not to host anymore as the video says at 48:44. So, it's not Steve's fault it went in that direction. Blame the producers/writers, etc

I liked both the Louie Anderson and Richard Karn versions of FF. I'm glad that Returning Champions returned in the 1st season of the Karn version. And, then 1st to 300 points rule returned in the 2nd Karn season. There were episodes in which families would get 300 points in the double point question. When this happened, Fast Money was split into 2 parts. The 1st part was where the Triple question would be. And, the 2nd part is where normal Fast Money would be. In the final (4th) Karn season, Karn didn't read the triple point question only once. He read the question to the family members who gave an answer. I wished Karn did host FF for a 5th year instead of replacing him with John O'Hurley. At least NBC did air a version of FF considering they passed on the show when it was in the development stages back in the mid-1970s (Fast Company). I like Steve Harvey FF. He makes it so relatable to everybody.

Great work, Connor - I feel like all my questions regarding this stalwart game show that I've been pondering on for many years have finally been answered! I think Steve Harvey is now the perfect host, although I don't watch regularly anymore since I agree with John O' Hurley that it's gotten a little too raunchy for my taste. The only time I ever see O' Hurley on TV nowadays is every Thanksgiving when he hosts the national dog show after the parade, but it's all good. Finally, RIP Louie Anderson (1953-2022)!
