Full disclosure: I don't play this beat 100% correctly. The open hihats are in different places... No idea how I could have been mistaken like that. So... maybe I'll do another tutorial someday to correct this. Please don't get into fights with other people quoting this video as proof for that you're correct. That said, the beat in this vid is still very nice and worth practicing and playing though!

What would really help with this video is if there were text displayed on what were the buttons corresponding to the drum sound played each for every beat. I think this helps with people with their own pad layouts. Like: Pattern1. A (kick) + B (hi-hat) >> C (hi hat) >> A (kick) + B (hi-hat) >> C (hi hat) >> A (kick) + B (hi-hat) >> C (hi hat) >> B (hi-hat)

Another great vid honestly, I guess what lead to your channel,was the fact I was looking to an alternative to my drum kit At very small and intimate gigs,, but I really wanted something I could trigger a kick drum with my foot.. As I don't think I could develop that level of technic with my fingers in a short time span. I actually have a mk 1 maschine,, back when I thought I was going to sequence stuff, but later discovered that , that wasn't for me,, I was going to buy something else for the job, but now I take it out of the closet and dust it off!! But I have an older version of maschine on my old Uni body Mac ,, which also has had very little use in years. Just wondering how it would go? Yes making it sound natural is the challenge,, Have ever tried jamming with another guitarist and bass player,, like actually doing a full gig ? You should if you have not,, it would work seriously 👍👍
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 года назад
I did jam a little and yes, that's a lot of fun actually. I'm going to Atlanta over christmas and theres a company that makes these "zendrum" controllers. Not cheap but those things might actually be a replacement for a real drum kit when jamming and gigging. Apparently they're standalone when combined with a special stompbox that has some drum kits inside. Very curious about that. I've seen some folks on the internet being very happy with them.

Y'all have to train your coordination. Some may assume pads are easier but when it comes to a complex drum pattern like this, it's all about perfection. Like he said, you got to really feel it. The heart beat will guide y'all

@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 5 лет назад
Thanks! This is a little more complex because they're not single shot samples, they're velocity based. So there are different samples for different velocities and then there are also multiple samples per velocity. This makes the whole thing sound 'realistic'.

hey man, very slick videos! I'm wondering can you point me in the right direction to learning how to change the layout of sounds on the pads for maschine? Can you change the pad position of sounds even in kits on the mk3? thanks
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 6 лет назад
The pads are empty initially. You can assign any sound to any pad and you can even create multiple banks where you switch from one pad layout to another by pressing 1 button. What I do using addictive drums 2 and the maschine mk3 In midi mode is go to midi map settinnings in addictive drums, find the sound I need, click on "learn' next to that sound and then I hit the pad on the maschine that I want to triggerr that sound. That works instantly. Just do that with 16 sounds and you're done. I explain all this in the beginner course on questforgroove.com Thanks for your enthusiasm and good luck!

Awesome style! Actually practicing it on my akai mpc live ^^ Do you recommend to use the "full level" button or to learn it with velocity? Does it change something to the groove itself? Thank you so much, you make great videos, I suscribed ^^
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 6 лет назад
Thnx! I always play with velocity. It's a big part of what makes things sound as if a real drummer is playing and I love the sound of those types of grooves. It does depend on your software kit as well because the samples in the kit have to be velocity layered for it to really work. You could use full level sometimes to work on to your timing though. If you hear every hit at the same loudness you can try and get everything super tight before switching on the velocity again. Might be a good exersize :-)

How Clyde plays it (2nd half, after he does "Cold Sweat"): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_55a_Sje0lY.html
@poserp
@poserp 5 лет назад
The thing that makes this hard for finger drumming is Clyde doesn't play straight 16ths, as heard on the record. That part IMO is overdubbed on the recording and the drums he's playing match more with what he demonstrates here.
@poserp
@poserp 5 лет назад
Also, it might help to put down a hi-hat pattern first the way he does it -- the hi-hat sets up all the syncopation and bits where he deviates from playing it "straight". Then, from there, figure out how to get the snare and kick. He does ghost notes or drags, but IMO most people who try to play it over-emphasize them. I'm learning this on a kit, as opposed to finger drumming, but in theory they involve mostly the same timing and feel.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 5 лет назад

Hey, no offense taken don't worry. I think that this way of playing a pad controller actually puts the human feel back into the music. Nowadays most grooves are looped or quantized perfectly to a grid and by playing yourself you will add the small deviations a human makes back in to the groove. I think a lot of songs nowadays have no soul and I think playing like this in your home studio will give it some more soul so you'll end up somewhere in between no soul and a lot of soul if you catch my drift. Obviously the best thing for soul would be to have a band like Vulfpeck. Awesome musicians that play together at the same time. It is very hard to form a band like that and keep it together though, so yeah... sometimes an in-between solution is better than no solution.
