Few pirate ships could match the 5th-rate flagship of Henry Every: The Fancy. Sailing at the head of a 5-ship armada, she dwarfed the lesser sloops and brigantines so common with pirates. Few opponents dared to resist her, and those who did soon faced a brutal 23-gun broadside. Her decks overflowed with battle-hardened scoundrels, expert at the sword and musket alike. With these tools and this ship, the crew of the Fancy sailed halfway around the world and back, taking one of the richest prizes in all of history, and faded into obscurity.

It feels very intentional and it’s funny. Yet again he finds a new way to be entertaining Edit, just in case my comment is misunderstood: When I say "funny," I mean that in a more figurative way. Definitely could have used a better word. I mean that the change is interesting, caught me off guard, and I think an improvement. The part that is "funny" to me is the very, very interesting mix of some English (UK) ways of saying words with some American ways of saying words. The two general accent types use different ways of speaking, so being able to combine the two so seemingly smoothly is very impressive.

I think the brutality of Avery makes him less popular. That would be my guess at least
@slizzysluzzer
@slizzysluzzer 4 месяца назад
Avery's career didn't last that long. From the mutiny to the Ganj-i-sawai is a year and a month. More than later pirates who followed in his wake, Avery wasn't married to life as an outlaw - he set out to gain riches, obtained those riches, and then retired. In that regard he's more akin to a protagonist from a heist film than the romanticized image of a pirate that has passed down to us from popular culture. Even the capture of the Ganj-i-Sawai wasn't a solo venture - it was a collaboration by several famous names of the Pirate Round (of which Avery would effectively cheat out of their shares of the treasure after all was said and done). His legend is primarily the fact that he made his wealth and then had the good sense to quit and the good fortune to (seemingly) retire in peace. But good sense doesn't make for a good story. The later Caribbean pirates would get up to more legendary exploits even if they mostly ended up dead as a result of such exploits, exploits like the blockade of Charles Town and the burning of Panama City, the 'Republic of Pirates' on Nassau and Black Bart's string of over 400 prizes, the Skull and Crossbones and putting fuses in your beard. Compared to all that, the story about the guy who immediately beelined for the Indian Ocean, captured one big ship, and then quit just isn't that eye-catching. In addition there were other pirates who did manage to retire with their stolen riches. John Taylor is probably the most notable, who's co-capture of the Nossa Senhora do Cabo with Olivier Levasseur might well have been more valuable in total haul than the Ganj-i-Sawai. He was pardoned, (maybe) served for a time as a Spanish pirate-hunter, and then vanished from history just like Avery. Another one of the captains involved in the Ganj-i-Sawai raid was a Rhode Island tavern owner, he also retired not long after and his tavern, the White Horse Tavern in Newport, still stands today. A lot of other pirates could have retired had they been willing. Blackbeard was one, he was pardoned and it was only when he took back to the seas that he was hunted down and killed. The thrill of being an outlaw was just too much of a rush in many cases. But the smartest criminals were and still are often not the most 'pen-worthy' ones.

11:09 he and his crew may not have removed the quarter gallery (the sort of balcony structures to the side) as one side would have a toilet (the other there for symmetry), so they may have wanted to keep that especially if it was enclosed unlike the ones at the bow. They may have reduced the decoration on it though.
@H3_Nozzlenose
@H3_Nozzlenose 4 месяца назад
The reason I decided to draw it without the quarter galleries was primarily because there would still be other facilities available at the beakhead at the bow, which is what the ordinary sailors would have used anyways. If the officers decided they really wanted to keep their own private seat of ease, this could easily be moved to the transom, which was already overhanging over the water, without the need for bulky quarter galleries. Or better yet, they could just use a chamber pot and dump it to leeward.

@H3_Nozzlenose
@H3_Nozzlenose 4 месяца назад
Most English vessels of this period would have had a lion figurehead, which is what I depicted on the Charles II. Dutch ships would have also had some winged mermaids accenting the lion, but other than that, there was relatively little variety in figureheads aside from the largest 1st rates.

Do Peter Easton, he was never bested or caught! He died an old man in Savoy as a Marquis. He dictated the location of the first British colony in Newfoundland so they wouldn't disturb his own town. He could count on 1500 men at his height as every Irishmen in the surrounding area of his town in Harbour Grace would work for him. His first mates family actually stayed in the area and are still living there today.

Ultimately, pirate´s ship is not primarily his home, but his tool to get real rich real fast. There´s no point for such a man to sail his ship until his demise. He got that treasure, this made the first quest complete. The other two quests (disappear, enjoy life) did not require a well known ship anywhere near his persona.
