I hate the TimelessChild for the soul reason that it makes the Doctor a “Special” character as opposed to a nobody who ran away to have fun.
@SarcyBoi41
@SarcyBoi41 7 месяцев назад
Same. I don't care that it adds more incarnations pre-Hartnell, Classic Who implied more than once that Hartnell wasn't the first anyway. If anything, adding more past incarnations is an interesting idea. But the Doctor shouldn't be a god-like figure, they are a nobody who made a big impact. It would've been so much interesting to have the Master turn out to be the Timeless Child imo.
@CrankyGrandma

But that was never the lore. In classic he was a lord and a special lord who could claim presidency of gallifrey. It was always implied something was going on. The Timeless Child actually made sense of what seemed to be contradictions in classic and nuWho

I can definitely see how the way it’s framed can lead to that but from what I understand the story is largely about proving the opposite. You can come from anywhere but it doesn’t change who you’ve become or who you want to be.
@lXedalinl
@lXedalinl 7 месяцев назад
no offense, but you can still be a special Time Lord, who can claim presidency, and still be someone who ran away. The Timeliness child litersally says, "aCtUAlLy YoU wErE NeVeR a TiMeLoRd" LMAO oh DUDE SO CLEVER. IM SO GLAD WE HAD THIS ADDED TO THE LORE ITS SO GOOD. Like so good it completely contradicts with SO MUCH ESTBALISHED LORE. Cmon, this is literally lazy bad writing. no Respect for what came before HUGE SMH.@@CrankyGrandma

@@ForEveryKindofGeek I feel like that’s kinda overshadowed by the plot point if making the doctor the origin of regeneration, it would be one thing to separate the doctor from the timelords- to make the character seem just that much more alone. I just feel that by giving them an ability and then having the only hardship the doctor faced when they were the timeless child and were being experimented on kinda redundant when they don’t remember any of it. When the doctor does remember it, the plot line feels pushed forward and basically forgotten. I very rarely like retconning and removing sections of bad writing later on a little annoying- but I’d be fine if rtd went in and basically removed the plot point all together/ more so make it into some massive payoff time loop plot by and old villain (or something like that.

Whilst I disagree with almost all of your conclusions I still appreciate the effort you put into making a quality video. Fandom is at its best when peole come together over a shared love.... and then bicker about it amongst themselves. For me the Moffatt era (for all its inconsistencies) was peak new Who. We sometimes forget how real-life events affect and shape television story writing and Dr. Who. The pandemic and the writers/actor's strike served as both an antagonist and yet a challenge to be taken for the stories and writing.

Yep, this. People saying the timeless child concept breaks canon clearly only had the most superficial interaction with the show previously.

All three examples are trying to answer a question that the show is better off not answering, though. It's not a show designed for extensive lore.
@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg
@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg 7 месяцев назад
@@michaeldallaway1988 on the contrary, it's entirely a show designed for extensive lore - it just has an exceedingly malleable canon - partly because the BBC is famous for soft-canon sci-fi shows, and partly because it's a show that's literally about constantly rewriting the past.
@michaeldallaway1988
@michaeldallaway1988 7 месяцев назад
@@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg save that for extended media. You're bringing back a show that's been in the doldrums. Stick to the premise of 'man with magic box, can go anywhere in space and time'. The freedom of the premise, and all that TV writers can do with it, is exactly why it works. Most people aren't hardcore Whovians who know about Lungbarrow or Rassilon or The Other. They might know he's a Time Lord. Maybe. But if you want the show to be a mainstream success, you focus on 'man with magic box with friends has adventures' and keep the hardcore fans happy by dripping in a taste of lore/larger plot arcs (Time War being the best recent example) without putting the majority off. And as a pretty big fan, I'd argue that as soon as you start asking further questions about the Doctor's origins, some of the magic goes away. I *like* not knowing.
@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg
@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg 7 месяцев назад
@@michaeldallaway1988 that doesn't make any sense. More to get point, it's the opposite of what made the relaunched Dr Who in 2005 wildly successful.

I really like the way the 12th doctor and missy head in the opposite direction in terms of their character. The doctor in season 8 doesn't really know who is he so definitely wouldn't be in the mood to try and mentor someone,missy in stark contrast starts out fully formed with a clear idea of who she is and what she wants to do but as the serious continues she becomes less self assured and shows a bit of doubt. By the time we get to series 10 the doctor has fully figured out who he is while missy seems conflicted and shows regret over everything she's done,she doesn't really figure it all out until the end of series 10 and that decision costs her her life

For me the 10th doctor definitely had the most consistent run in the entire show so far,things started a little slow in season 2 but as the show continued it kept getting better and better and by the time we got to season 4 the show had reached new heights. Matt smiths era took the opposite approach,season 5 of doctor who was amazing and for a while was the strongest start we had ever gotten,season 6 and 7 were still good but overall it didn't live up to what we got before. Peter capaldi was amazing as the doctor and I love series 10 the more I watch it but in general I just didn't really like a lot of stories he was in.

My first real exposure to Doctor Who was Smith's final episode. My wife was a huge Whovian, so I watched it with her. . I was very confused, why are there robotic eyestalks coming out of peoples foreheads? What is going on, you love this show? Why? It's so convoluted and weird. . After about a year of teasing her about The Time of the Doctor, she finally got me to sit down and watch the Eccelson series. It was fine, but I didn't love it, I do now, but when Barty Crouch Jr became the Doctor, it finally clicked for me. (Note she never put it together that the creator of the Cybermen was none other than Barty Crouch Sr, lol) . And together, we binged through the Martha Jones era, my wife isn't a fan of Donna, lol. She stopped watching with me and I continued my binge, I watched all of Torchwood too, catching up with the franchise just in time for Capaldi to take up the mantle. . I felt that the first two Capaldi seasons were largely uneven, even more so than Smith's seasons, but Capaldi's final season was a strong way for him to finish his version of The Doctor. . But i haven't been able to finish even the first season of Chinball's Doctor Who, Jodi is great, but I just can't engage with the stories or characters. . I'm sure that I'll watch them eventually, but for me the Davies era was by far the strongest writing of the franchise. Which is why I'm excited for tomorrow night, not to mention the return of My First Doctor, Barty Crouch Jr. . Here's hoping that Davies can bring back the magic that made me a fan nearly a decade ago.

I think I will always have a soft spot for Moffat’s era as it was my introduction to the show and I really enjoy the “Science Fantasy” take on Doctor Who.

Thanks! I’ll fully admit to some bias over Chibnall’s time. I liked a lot of his bigger ideas but I think he and his team never got to operate at their best under normal conditions. It would have been amazing to see how they evolved over time the same way moffat and his crew found their voice, but I also see plenty of value in what we got. All in all, I think the evolution of the show has always been a huge part of its story and it’s been great seeing the changes from era to era. I can’t wait to see what Davies has planned now that he’s had some time away. Might even see moffat and Chibnall come back for their own grand returns down the line.

Id argue a lot of that spirit is still alive and well in the Chibnall era, you just need to know where to look. I’ll concede that it had a shaky first season but there’s still plenty of great stuff to love. It’s just a different flavor of the show, and I’ve really come around to it over the years.

I think there are a number of reasons why people ended up not liking Chibnall’s time. Personally I love his previous work and I’ve loved a lot of his collaborators, but I do think they were hobbled by a weaker first season and a number of production problems later on. That said, I think there’s still plenty to love about what they did get to make, and I’d love to see them come back and get a fair shake down the line, even if it’s just a special.

I’m going to have to disagree. I had a similar attitude on my first watch but I came back to it about a year ago and was floored by the storytelling episode to episode. I do think moffat’s fairytale approach is kind of at odds with the huge setups he puts out but it’s also completely in line with what his big idea is: a more magical take on science fiction. There are still bits I don’t connect with, that’s true for every season, but I’ve really come to love it for everything new it adds. Same goes for chibnall, and same will likely be for Davies’ return.

I loved your video, I understand why you held back on Chibnal as your video is a celebration of Doctor Who but imo, that era was a low point as the writing was terrible partly due to the fact that his new writing team essentially had no experience in high concept sci-fi. That being said, your borderline innocent (on purpose or not) take on it makes me feel more positive about the whole thing. If you or anyone in the audience genuinely enjoyed that era then more power to you and I’m glad you got something out of it. I hope your video gets more views and I’m leaving a like 😊
@ForEveryKindofGeek
@ForEveryKindofGeek 7 месяцев назад
Sorry you didn’t connect with the last few years of the series, but I’m going to have to disagree. Chibnall’s staffers are incredibly skilled writers, and Malorie Blackman and Pete Mctighe both have extensive work in sci-fi and fantasy. In my opinion the inconsistency of the earlier season came out of the fact that they implemented an American style writer’s room, something Chibnall didn’t have much experience running. There’s a definite improvement in episodic stories later on, but when you weigh it against pandemic production it’s hard to say that team ever got a fair shake, especially when people cite capaldi’s Doctor as the turning point for moffat’s era. I can definitely say the Chibnall years had a bad start, but they don’t detract from any of the writers or their work on the series. If anything, I can’t wait to see how Davies builds on it all.

@@ForEveryKindofGeek Seems you don't even understand the argument, yet you're just done with it anyway. You probably don't even know what woke is, and think the show was always woke because it talked about social issues. Bruh, woke is not the same as progressive. Woke means "insincere, shallow, lazy attempts to appear progressive while not being progressive at all". Progressive is "a thoughtful, sincere, nuanced and intelligent handling of political and social issues. Doctor Who went from that to the woke "Shame you're not a woman anymore." I dare you to say that to a trans man irl (the closes irl equivalent for a Timelord who regenerated from a woman to a man). You know what that's called? That's literal transphobia. In an attempt to attack the straight white men they so despise, the writers committed a friendly fire against trans people instead because they're woke, not progressive. They don't care. They only use representation and social issues to get clout, to promote their show and to appear as loyal allies while only abusing the people they claim to represent for personal gain. But hey, why do I even bother, you're not gonna read this anyway, you'll just call me a conservative, a right-winger, a bigot, or, if you're feeling your inner Hasan Piker, even a certain c-word and probably block me. Cool, I don't much care, but I did want to at least give an honest argument a try. P.S. If I were writing Rose, she'd be just as trans as she is, she'd just have an actual character and wouldn't be caught doing ironic friendly fire along with her mom. Still as trans as now, still Yasmine Finney, just written like a person and not a propaganda poster.
