Not like the Norwegians who watch really dull long form tv shows: It all started in 2009 with NRK’s 7 hour live broadcast of the train journey from Bergen to Oslo. Since then they’ve shown 18 hours of minute by minute salmon fishing, 13 hours of live knitting, and all 899 hymns in the hymnal sung live for over 60 hours. And then there was my personal favorite, the 12 hour broadcast of logs burning in a fire...

I used to work as a mover when I was young and that moving elevator excites me to no end. Damn, I wish we had those!
@JasperJanssen
@JasperJanssen 4 года назад
Yep, these things are standard for most of NL. Even when you’re moving into a larger terraced house, you will often get one of those lifts, just because the stuff that needs to go one or two stories up is so much easier when it doesn’t have to go through the stairs. (Also I think on our last move we had a literal hundred boxes of (heavy!) books, so that might have contributed to the movers’ desire to oh please get a lift.) PS: there is a wide variety of levels of service for a move. Many younger people with smaller budgets and less crap to move will just rent a van for a weekend and then buy pizza and beer for all their friends - not unlike in other countries, I think? - but when you move up in the world, especially to the “we wrap it for you” level, there is a point where it becomes cheaper to rent a lift for a day than it is to rent a bunch of extra burly men - and the lifts are cheap enough and ubiquitous enough and the burly men are expensive enough that that point comes quite quickly.
@NotJustBikes
@NotJustBikes 4 года назад
Oh yeah, I did not have movers for most of my 28 moves. It was friends plus a crate of beer and pizza. We once had the "they pack it for you" service, when a company was sponsoring our move. That was wild. The whole house was packed up within a hour.
@hendman4083
@hendman4083 2 года назад
Could be that those elevators are required by law (ARBO) to be used by the employer of the movers. Apart from that, these elevators seem to speed up the process, so the job can be done faster and with fewer people. Sounds like a win-win situation for everybody.

I have to say: I really laughed out loud as you told the next ten minutes would be watching paint to dry! :D We don't have those kind of moving elevators here in Finland but most of our (two or three pane) windows can be opened with a standard window key with hinges on one side. Some moving companies that deal with bigger stuff such as pianos can rent cranes to lift those heavy things down through a window instead of trying to fit them through narrow door openings.

I've never seen them here (Gelderland province) And i've worked in a professional moving company, we did it all by hand, using stairs if no elevator present. the marks on the wall are just made by amateurs who rushed through (Heavy i suppose?). I've moved lots of couches, closets and whatnot through the most impossibly small stairs, but where there's a will, there's a way! Just takes some patience, some brute strength in some cases, and an eye for maneuvering large objects through small doorways and stairwells :') Kind of similar to packing bags and playing tetris... you know when you're good at it. p.s. your hands are great "Bumpers" they can take a beating and a small scratch easily heals, However scratches on furniture or walls can be a pain in the ass!

Going off of memories of a trip to Amsterdam 33 years ago, I knew about the hooks. The Dutch stairways were incredibly narrow and in my hotel the elevator was very small too. I hadn’t noticed the slight slope to the street facing walls. It makes sense though. What I haven’t seen in your videos that I’ve watched were the devices that kept drivers from parking on sidewalks as they do (or did) in other European cities. I’m referring to the Amsterdammers (metal posts) that I recall being everywhere. Have they been removed or are they just in older positions of the city where I spent most of my time? Someone told me that the word Amsterdammer had three meanings. The first was the demonym for a person from Amsterdam, the second was the metal posts. I can’t recall what the third one was. @@NotJustBikes I did use the transit at one of the resorts. I was staying in Davenport. From Davenport i went to DSpring to walk for 15 minutes and take the busses from there. Its cheaper, and yes it's very walkable. I even done some resort exploring and from 1 to the other was no problems to get to. But sometime some busses did dissapear out of nowhere. So i had to wait for 45 minutes sometimes.

@ Not Just Bikes: All newer buildings in Netherlands of 4 floors or more are required to have elevators these days, but even then, 4-5 floors up, this is the easiest way of moving house.

UK here, my friend once had to take out the front window to get her sofa in, but not anticipating this had to leave it in the front garden and get them to come back the next day to do it hoping it wouldn't rain overnight. I had to take off my front door to get out one of my two (identical!) sofas that had somehow warped and grown a few cms longer than the other in the years I'd been living there. No chance of lifts or going out the windows here, just lots of winding stairs and trying to find the right angle while channelling Friends and shouting "PIVOT!"

Yep, i am one of those Dutchies watching your videos. Not for confirmation of greatness of the nation but more to understand what urban planning is all about. You point out stuff that i have taken for granted for all of my life. The stuff about zoning laws influencing your need for a car to go shopping for instance and the bicycle high ways without traffic lights. I never noticed either of them until you pointed them out to me.

Southeastern USA. We rented a similar hydraulic ladder to move many heavy boxes of flooring to our second floor, through a front window. Such ladders are normally used here to move bundles of asphalt shingles up top for a roofing job. I like the removable window system.

I am a parrot enthusiast. The other night I watched a video of yours and remarked to my girlfriend "hey, isn't that where we saw all the ringnecks on my birthday?". And right here at 3:39, I heard one squawking in the distance. Amazing. I know that some people consider them a pest, but it's so sweet to have them around (and yes I know there's lots of word on them being an "invasive species", but this is sort of an anthropocentric term. No empirical studies have actually found the local feral ringneck populations to be causing any damage to Dutch flora and fauna).

In the 90s and early 2000s I stull used the hooks and a pulley to move in Amsterdam, I didn't have money to hire a company since I was a student. We even used it to get 20 barrels of beer up an old "pakhuis" where squatters lived. The pakhuis had a build in pulley system which worked great!

Nearly everybody in Italy uses moving elevators when moving house. Italian apartments do not have sash windows but 2 door windows that open fully inward so you do not need to remove window parts to get your furniture and belongings out. Many Italian apartments have balconies as well which makes the moving job even easier. There! Besides the Dutch, the U.S.Aians, the Belgians, the British and the Germans, a Sicilian who enjoys uninteresting content like the one often found in Not Just Bikes videos.

I think the closest most American apartments got to "Easier to move" is having a freight elevator some where in the building. Narrow stair ways, small halls, tiny windows. Nothing about moving is convenient and probably why a lot of renters just leave their furniture behind for the landlord to deal with. It's not like your ever getting your deposits back anyways with most Landlords.

These elevators have probably been invented to get tons of solid roofing tiles to the top of large city houses. Maybe some moving company innovated with increasing regulations on how much you could have your employees do backbreaking work. Although more efficient, these mashines don't come cheap (for the customer) and are usually used by those moving companies whose customers don't have to pay out of their own private pocket (but ISO norms matter). I've seen them in action for at least 30yrs in Germany, so maybe theres a correlation between markets where you both have roof tiles and high income/more stringent OSHA laws.
