The most beautiful Apple computer ever made is the Apple G4 Cube. Some people make fun of it as being impractical. I don't understand it because it's perfect.
I take mine apart and stuff it with an Intel i9 9900k processor and build my Dream Computer.
Come tour this Hackintosh in the most stunning case ever, with the best consumer computer chip ever (definitely not true), in the fastest modded Hackintosh in the world (might be true? …for now).

With the release of the new M1 Mac mini, it is possible to hack together a G4 cube without any fans and decent thermals.

What do you meant by desend thermals when the m1 stays super cool with almost zero noise levels in a phin laptop if you manage to put it in the cube with a bigger heatsink you wouldn't need a fan.

The noise is most likely from your PSU fan alone. That's a 1u server PSU, servers are kinda noisy because they're not meant to be in the same room as you. Otherwise this is a really cool video with the basics of computer building well explained for beginners (-;

I'd say it's probably a good idea to keep your thermals below 90 C to expand the lifespan of your parts. You could downclock/undervolt your CPU so it can run at cooler temps. I'm really impressed by this build, especially with the lack of background knowledge with some of the methods used (which is too relatable, lol) it's refreshing to see someone *working with what they have*. Thanks for sharing this!

But the coolers doesn't blow hot air at each other, and have it rise up. They suck the air in towards their respective cooling fins. And in the graphics cards case, the exhaust is now facing down, where the little noctuas are pulling the hot GPU exhaust up into the case again. Impressive build to throw yourself into tho.

I am considering doing the same thing to my cube. What GPU did you choose? I would love to replace my huge PC rig with something small, but it has to game. No way I can cram my RTX2070 in there. Maybe run the GPU externally using thunderbolt?

It's a great question about an external GPU! Maybe the thunderbolt could work. Go check out the subreddit r/sffpc for other ideas of cramming gaming PCs into small cases. There are great options for full sized GPUs in smaller cases. OR you can stick with a single blower SFF mini graphics card. There are definitely better cards than the one I used, but, maybe not as good as your RTX2070. For me, it just had to play some video games.

You can definitely reduce the temps a bit more if you undervolt the CPU and GPU. You could look into delidding too, however it might be more trouble than it's worth on the i9. Some people on r/sff have replaced their GPU fan with a noctua one to get to noise down too.

I will definitely look into the undervolting. I SO rarely push the CPU to its limits (and secretly I "delidded" the entire cube from the outer plastic when I render video to give it an airflow fighting chance)

Thanks so much! I just took a picture (actually a bunch of pictures) with high bokeh. They are at this link if you want to use them for some reason: imgur.com/a/qq9tJQf It was a little over $2000 all in. And of course this was a while back, so there are better motherboards and CPUs and GPUs now. You just have to think about size and what you will use your computer for. Honestly this computer is overkill for just web-browsing and word processing. But for the 10% of the time I'm editing it's worth it!

Hello, this is your Hackintosh very nice. Have you had graphic problems with the riser tapes? On my Hackintosh, the computer had problems, graphics problems, artifacts and resets. There was no such problem under Windows. What brand of riser tape did you use?

I really don't push it though, and probably could have run graphics on the iGPU to save $ and space. Curious about the total cost. I have a working Cube (although needs the “30 sec. hair dryer to the bad capacitor” trick to cold boot - okay after that if always plugged in). I’d love to do this but the time spent getting a Hacintosh working for me is prohibitive. I ‘d also have a hard time convincing my wife that spending almost as much (or more?) as a M1 Mac Mini makes any sense. (I would only use a Quad core i7 with no dedicated video card, so wouldn’t be as much as yours.)

hey man so to test thermals you will want to run some benchmarks and keep tabs on what its doing at that time - thermals while not under load dont really mean anything - its when the thing is being stressed that matters. someone mentioned the aida64 stress test on windows before and thatd work. could just try cinebench and run it 4 or 5 times in a row (the first test will give you the best results but the process will heat up cpu, gpu, etc.) and watch thermals with that hardware monitor app you had there at the same time. granted, it might not FULLY load EVERYTHING at once, but it does a damn good job of stressing the system overall. the Tj temp of the 9900K is (I believe) 105Cso as long as youre under that i wouldnt worry at all. and as you mentioned, it will throttle anyways to keep heat down - but with running benchmarsk you can see the relationship between thermals, throttling, and perf lost due to heat.

True on the cube, but Apple did use SCSI on quite a lot of their machines while PC manufacturers absolutely insisted on foisting cheap shoddy IDE on everyone, which eventually caused Apple to give up on SCSI, unfortunately.

@@dregenius SCSI used to work really well in raid configuration especially with extended writes like massive photoshop files. It was definitely quirky to configure with its 'rule of 7' and the need for a 'terminator' at the end of the SCSI chain or sometimes not as each case sample was different..

George! Oh, man, I always wanted to go to your world famous George Senda's Deli!! Suggestion....! Please add what exact GPU did you use ? OR at least put the specs in description for such build videos in future. ...All the time I was just thinking about that GPU and it just got irritating.

For future reference: you can just connect the 2 Pins on the motherboard with a Screwdriver to power it on, instead of waiting 2 days for amazon delivery ;)

This is legitimately how I started my PC for a couple of weeks before I got tired of it and built a "front panel" for it. For context this is a sleeper I'm working on but needed an extra PC for online class, so it doesn't have a case to speak of and not all of the hardware is together yet, so that's why I went with this janky solution.

Hi, nice video, thank you for sharing. I also own a mac cube, but during the last teardown I got confused. I have a problem with the screws that secure the handle that allows you to pull the mac out of the case. There are 4 screws, 2 on each side of the handle, the 2 screws on left side are under the hard disk and airport cable, the 2 screws on right side are easily accessible. My questions: are the 2 screws on the right side different from 2 on the left side, or are the 2 screws on each side different? 4 identical screw or, two pairs of screws? thank you very much. Sorry for my English.

The issue I see with this is there is zero airflow yes you have an I9 but it is under performing. We both know that computer runs super hot with any type of load other than RU-vid. It’s definitely cool but There’s a reason why Steve Jobs didn’t put a PSU inside

I think 'destroyed' is rather an alarmist word to describe this case mod? I would have used the word 'conserved' myself as basically there is nothing sexy about the antiquidated internals inside this case or Mac classic System 7 - OS9 for that matter. It is always possible to emulate 'classic' in Sheep Shaver if you fancy a bit of showboating but i don't see the point myself. This guy made a Herculean effort to save this beautiful piece of modern art from that great landfill skip in the sky if you ask me!
