I love my Profile Design DRV/GMR handlebars. Widths from 36cm C-2-C with flared drops only, so your hoods stay in the 'normal' road handlebar position (I angle mine in a little) with an extra 8cm flare. That's great for comfort, stability and loads of extra leverage for sprinting!

Love that they finally have readily available stems to swap out. Even though they are $199 or $179 with easy to get coupon that's still far less than changing out an entire integrated bar like you would have to on a high end trek madone or similar for $650+. Canyon is certainly not for everyone with no shop support and lackluster customer support after purchase but if you know how to do all your own bike maintenance like myself, I think what they're offering is quite compelling.

If, like they say, they designed the Aeroad around pro racers, it does make sense not to test with bottles. The most critical segments of a stage race sees riders throwing off their bottles. Except for the glaring stem fit issue, I do like the way this model is evolving.

I have an MVDP edition Aeroad CFR from a couple years ago. SM size came with a 9cm stem--short for me I knew but I rode it for a season this way and it wasn't that big a deal. The longer stem unit was out of stock for eternity really... I ended up basically trading the 90 for a 100, buying and selling on ebay. I was a shop mechanic for a long time so these things don't bother me but prohibitive for anybody that doesn't work on their own bike, for sure. This all said--the bike is amazing. When I ride it in aero stuff, like helmet, kit, socks... holy cats.... it is so much 'faster' than my older rim brake Felt FR-1. It's bananas. I don't ride it in races b/c I'm paranoid of damaging it, but did take it and rode it in the 'Eddy' style TT in a recent stage race. It made the difference for a podium finish for sure.

If only Canyon would let you choose your stem length when buying their $10,000 bike, would take a lot of the edge off of not being able to easily swap stem lengths on the integrated cockpit. But if it's anything like the current Aeroad, then Canyon won't even let you buy a new cockpit at all

They have "low stock" of 70 & 120-140, so these will be unavailable very soon. If I was to buy an Aeroad I'd immediately be up for ~450€ to get the right bars and stem length, plus a different saddle, so €500+, and then there's changing things over, longer hoses, etc. Looks nice but not practical unless you fit it as is IMO.

Good video and review.The bike looks great and is a good deal at the top end. However, the idea that you can't spec a stem length on a $10K+ bike is ridiculous in 2024 and clearly done only to simplify Canyon's logistics. A couple of things I would add: 1. Canyon bikes are weirdly huge. Most everyone will need to size down. 2. Canyon post-sale customer experience isn't great based on what I've heard, which is especially annoying given all of the proprietary stuff on this bike.

I find it crazy that many mail order bikes continue to have an integrated cockpit, especially at "entry" level. I dont think consumers would ever prfioritize aerodynamics over fit, if they actually knew what worked for them. I've had a few bike fits in my time and am pretty confident what works and what does not for me. BUT I still have a collection of stems. I bet the seat post is proprietary too - crazy.
@samuel8590

That is why I build all my on bikes. I purchase the frame and build from there. My own crank length, cockpit etc. At that price, these companies should offer a swap. It makes Zero sense to me how they can sell a complete bike with the size of cockpit they feel like putting on the bike. Those water bottle cages are ridiculous. These companies are getting out of hand with their proprietary stuff. Now water bottles!!?? Geez. We can definitely throw a fit. At $10K....these bike companies MUST do better.

Canyon should sell the "drop extensions" (or whatever they are called) with different lengths of forward rake, so you could effectively lengthen the cockpit without the need to replace the stem. Not sure how the strength would be affected, and the "tops" position wouldn't move, but I think it could be a reasonable solution that solves at least some of the concerns. Overall, I think the concept of a semi modular integrated cockpit is worth pursuing, and although it's probably easier to just replace the stem for the pros who get paid to race the bike - it's rather insulting to the customer base to pay the exorbitant MSRP for a bike that is nearly impossible to get a proper fit without spending another chunk of change.

The advantage of direct to consumer beyond price should be the ability to get the correct size components. Stem length, bar width & ideally crank length opinions would make sense. Instead, it seems you automatically have the possibility of a £400 additional payment just for the cockpit.
@irfuel
@irfuel Месяц назад
From a logistics point of view direct to consumer doesn't change a thing. It's just to get more money in their pockets. Bikes are still mass-produced, boxed and shipped to a warehouse. The difference is that with normal brands the warehouse stock is sent to dealers, and here it's sent directly to customers. Allowing custom parts would require them to have someone open those boxes and replace parts, before shipping = costing them more money, so they make it a customer problem. At least in a bike shop you can negotiate this and they might even have some spares in stock.
@morrisizing
@morrisizing Месяц назад
@irfuel Canyon have a rather large assembly production line in Germany. Quest Composites just end them the frames, fork & bars & they are built up in Germany. But agree it's all £€$€ by standarding part sizes then forcing you to buy the correct size proprietary cockpit parts if you can source them.

Brace yourself I think this bike should work well from a fit perspective given the adjustable handle bars and a 10cm stem sorry Ben. However it depends on the handle bar reach…. I’m bound to see one in my fit studio soon👀 I’d guess around 80mm? I agree with you longer stem options and seat widths 145 through 155 would suit more buyers out of the box so to speak and would save changes on purchase perhaps.

Canyon refused to let me friend buy headset bearings for his Ultimate - because.... he is not the original owner of the bike. This Aeroad frame looks good. The problem is other stuff. The one-stem-fits-all sales method is insulting to their customers. One thing they could do is sell those handlebar pieces with different shapes to extend the reach - so that someone needing a longer reach would only need to change those. (and actually they could pretty easily do it at the Canyon warehouse because those can be changed later - after the bike has been fully assembled - just before shipping), But... do they bother doing that? .... And then they sell the bike with bottle cages built to only hold special Canyon extra large diameter round bottles - extra un-aero bottles... But they base their aero claims off tests done with no bottles/cages. It's getting funny now. IDK if I've ever seen a bike company so ... passive aggressive against their own customers

@@edrcozonoking Physical size doesn't determine the width of the sitbones, paradoxically enough. There are tiny people on 168mm seats, and tree trunk folks sitting on 130mm seats. How far you roll your pelvis / aggressive your position is also matters.

Every bloody brand claims to have the fastest bike, but the fastest bike is the bike you own! Spend a fraction of the cost on a training plan, put in the time and effort, and you will be a faster and better cyclist overall!

Admittedly, I'm not going to watch this video, because if I watch one more video where someone is purposely fooling others into thinking that if they just spend $10-14K they'll be so much faster, I'm going to puke. The fastest bike in the peloton is whatever Pogacar is riding, because he's Pogacar. If you buy this bike, you're still going to be you and you won't be any faster than you are on your $1,500 bike. Hate to break it to you, but you can't buy it, you have to earn it.

Sans parler du très mauvais SAV que je constate depuis quelques mois, sans être le seul. Honteux et aucune réponse de leur part aux manquements constatés qui auraient pu avoir des conséquences désastreuses. Excellente marque >< SAV horrible et cher.

This is the bike that Mathieu van der Poel (and other pros) had the handlebars break in races. It was so bad that Canyon had to issue a 'Stop Ride' to all users to halt the carnage.

16:41 did i read it right, 46 front shifts in one ride? either you were testing sram’s chain drop theory, or you need a different cassette. i run 33 front, 36 rear, i only shift front when it’s above 10% gradient, so i basically don’t shift front. part of the reason is that i don’t want to stop and re-hook the chain. but 46 shifts are beyond my comprehension……

@@COMOMTB you guessed right. pretty flat by cyclists' standards. i once rode about 140km, the total climb was about 1100m.
