Honestly I thought it would be more expensive. 600 dollars isn't cheap by any means, but considering the advantages, availability, and that this is super cutting edge, I thought it would be more expensive. Especially in this new era of pc parts where RAM costs as much as your kidneys and a GPU requires you to win the lottery.

That Star Citizen card you tossed probably drove half of the sales for this SSD.

The faster SSDs get the lower the benefits seem to be. The difference between playing a game off a SATA-3 SSD and an NVMe SSD are barely noticeable, especially as many games these days have a countdown timer before the match starts anyway lol.

I could see this working as an ultra-fast cache for a high capacity internal storage array. It's actually what I'm intending on using one for :)

To best honest, it will be better to use it as a system drive than gaming storage because of its fast random 4k r/w speed. Also $400 for 280G version of 900P isn't that expensive if you can fully make use of its potential. But marketing it as the ultimate storage for gamers are misleading, as normal sata SSD is good enough for average users.

So I was thinking about setting up a RAM drive... Wanted to buy some extra RAM for that. The same 16gb DDR4 kit I bought at the end of 2015 cost about 75€. Now it's at 160€. This is insane, if I had bought all the components for my current build a little later I would not have been able to afford 16 gigs O_O This RAM and NAND shortage blows...

The reason for it not making differences in a work tasks, might be a driver issue. An update for library and integrated API for a drive update would allow u to use optain SSD to its full potential instead on a work tasks or other task, that redunded read and write library codes ;)

I would have loved to see Database performance using Octane. That would have been a perfect test bed regarding Physical IO's bot Random and Sequential.

Intel didn't advertise making gaming load speeds faster.... they advertised making a SPECIFIC game load faster... and sensibly so, as you said, its a 200GB game, compared to most normal ones on the larger end of that scale which are a mere 25-33% that size.

My 905P U.2 is still going strong in 2022. I am surprised this tech didn't go more main stream at over 7 PB of endurance for a 260 GB Drive.

Yeah if you need a HUGE PageFile (like Star Citizen Alpha 3.0 needs currently if you don't have 32GB of RAM) that SSD would definitely be a benefit. But then again, for the average gamer (including Star Citizens like me) your better off just buying more RAM and getting a lot bigger SSD for cheaper.

Have you tried running machine learning with that drive ? I think it's built for that. Could be a great test / benchmark to test machine learning capabilities of hardware. Love your channel!

Where Optane really shines is as a log-type device for not-quite datacenter uses: An an SLOG for your ZFS NAS, for example; the low 1QD latency (which is what limits SLOG in ZFS), makes this a great device. In fact; it pretty much made 2nd-hand ZeusRAM devices off eBay obsolete.

@Linus Tech Tips - You never need to get rid of the Ramdisk, you just need more RAM. Use the Optane disk to store Ramdisk images, then load them when you want to play. Transfer rates should be within seconds for even 30GB games. I load all my Steam games and SC2 like that, and I "only" have 48GB system RAM.

Picking this up when it came out is easy to swallow than what they cost now in 2021; almost 3x as much for the 480 gb. Runs like a champ.

Very fast drive are only for big tasks, but even with fastest drive, there are other problems with memory, GPU and CPU... You need almost whole new system for it! Don't forget some software are just not made for it too. :(

I just picked up a small 100 gb optane stick and simply putting my system's page file, appdata/roaming folder adn firefox cache on ti all showed some incredible changes. Especially firefox. I'm going to probably clean things up and put all of windows on and and I'd be surprised if I didnt' see everything speed up as a result. I'm quite impressed so far and I'mve been on nvme ssds for some time.

For server's this works great! (using 15) for a online game! So for using in server's, this Optane Mem. works great!

How much faster than M.2 could you expect it be when it only uses 4 PCIe lanes? Those 4xM.2 RAID0 PCIe cards from ASRock, Asus, and High Point use all 16 lanes.

Houdini is a nice test, but then another question arises - after rendering 1 minute long simulation, is the 960 / 970 still usable, or reached its end of life? This is where Optane shines. These scratch drive scenarios. Right now pairing it with BFGPU is the fastest home computational rig money can buy.

yeah same deal as the original Optane products - it's nice, and the improvements are awesome. but it's basically tech for Servers, not Consumers. though if the cost can compete with SATA SSD's, then i'm interested. bonus points if it can be smaller so it's further out of the way. especially if >16 PCI-E Lanes starts to become standard so that no sacrifices have to be made for people to use them, even if they want to Multi-GPU or other higher end stuff.

On load times... sure, because Samsung's controller firmware is optimized for sequential access even at low queue depths, and the operating system's filesystem is going to perform some read-ahead as well (so even though the game might be just doing a single-thread read() loop, the filesystem itself is probably dispatching I/Os at QD2 or QD4). Intel SSDs are not typically optimized for sequential I/O at all. Also, Intel tends not to optimize for large block sizes (though I'm not sure about the optane SSD). Sometimes 32KB block sizes are as big as you can go with Intel without hitting massive losses in performance, whereas with Samsung and other vendors performance ramps up consistently with block size all the way to 128KB. Which is one reason why Intel doesn't usually publish random I/O tests for large block sizes. And Intel's NVMe offerings in general can't handle high-concurrency multi-queue operation very well either (see note 1), whereas Samsung's can. In terms of scratch space... well, yes and no. Optane still doesn't have nearly enough durability to page ram the way Intel tries to market it as being able to do. For nominal scratch space use (and not memory expansion), normal SSDs generally work just as well because VM paging operations tend to be single-threaded by the operating system anyway, and have a huge amount of overhead above and beyond the actual access to storage. In anycase, you just beef up the amount of 3D NAND SSD storage you buy to compensate for the lower durability, and the price still winds up being significantly lower than buying an Optane drive. You can buy 2x to 3x the amount of normal 3D NAND storage for the same price as an Optane drive. I'd argue that having the greater amount of storage is far more useful. Intel's controllers tend to be comedies of poor design, which is why Optane's best advantages are confined to simple cases that very few people actually care about. note 1: by multi-queue I don't mean pushing four I/O requests onto a single queue, I mean pushing one I/O request to each of four NVMe queues. The whole point of NVMe is to be able to assign a chipset queue to EACH cpu in the system, so the operating system can avoid shared resource locks when accessing the storage. Intel does ok when pushing several requests to fewer queues, but performance tends to implode when you try to use the NVMe device's max queues to assign queues 1:1 against CPUs, and then put several requests on each queue concurrently. This is a big problem, because of course the WHOLE POINT of NVMe is to avoid the single-shared-request-queue design of AHCI. But you wouldn't know it from Intel's extremely poor firmwares. -Matt

I went for a standard SATA ssd for my new gaming build. Just makes the most sense, that way I could afford a drive big enough for windows and my most frequently played games.

2x 840Pro 250GB(!) SATA SSDs in RAID0 on an old z170a + i7-6700k + 2666MHz RAM gives me 441r/348w 4K Q32T1 score, and 1105r/950w sequential scores. The 4k random was sub-100 r/w. But considering 3x 850Evo 250GB SSDs in RAID0 on my brother's machine (same base hardware platform) yielded a 50% improvement over 2x RAID0, 4x 860Evo in raid0 would still be well under half the price of the 900P, twice the disk space, and probably pretty close or better at any random stuff and close enough in sequential reads as to be unnoticeable for most gamers.

And he plays Starcitizen, more funnier, it's 2023 and were still waiting for the game to release. 🙂
