The Fastest VR Shooter Yet - Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter

It's Serious Sam... in VR... It's fast and fun and now in VR. I play the game for about 40 minutes using the trackpad motion and then in the last 5 minutes I do try out the two teleport systems. Having tried the teleport stuff, I much, much prefer the trackpad motion for the speed but also because the teleport stuff just felt like I was playing the game in a super laggy multiplayer game. Most games, teleport isn't a problem, but with how constant and often you need to do it in SSVR: TFE, it just doesn't work, for me, but I'm still glad it's there for people that can get motion sick.
Speaking of motion sickness, you'll see in the video that I handle myself just fine after 50 minutes, and this was recorded after I did 30 minutes of it, and after that, I did start to feel the early stages of motion sickness. I do clarify that I hadn't played any VR in 2 1/2 days and I just jumped straight into this, so that could explain it. During the 50 minutes that this was recorded from though, I felt just fine and could have played longer, but I needed to stop and render the footage.
Intro song is: "Battlefield Theme (Orchestral Version)" By Mikael Karlsson from the Battlefield: Bad Company OST

I love the direction these vr games are going. They started out stationary, then went on-the-reals gameplay and now they're remaking classics with vr. Really hope VR hits big in the industry with AAA titles.

Now that devs are getting used to VR and also getting feedback/data about what people can handle, they are able to take more risks. It's very exciting to see it evolve.

The game or the VR system... or both? The game is available on Steam and it's called Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter. The VR system is the HTC Vive and you can get it from places like Amazon, Best Best, Newegg, or directly from HTC (the same people that make cell phones).

Hey please help me. I really want to know how much it will cost me to play VR. I'm not talking about the PC specs I saw that you have them in the description. I'm talking about the head set and the handles or whatever they are called and do you need anything else because I saw other streamers have something like two stances like vertical rods that are near them I don't know. If you can anwser I will be really happy like links for your equipment maybe will be enough.

Dual double-barreled shotguns? That is so unfair to non-VR players. If two Kleers come at us, we have to blast one, dodge, the second while we reload, then blast the second. VR people can just blast both at once.

Man, I don't know HOW the hell you can play this with artificial locomotion. Everything I've played in VR using that style makes me wanna go lie down in bed from how nauseous I get lol. By the way, I dig your style. You don't yell and freak out and fake reactions like an idiot. Makes it easier to focus on the gameplay. Good job explaining the mechanics and stuff too!

Thank you very much. I specifically try to keep myself composed as best I can. I don't have any plans for RU-vid to become a financial source, so I don't have any interest to stoop to the lowest common denominator of over-exaggerated reactions and such. 37:21 this is some Equilibrium Clerick shit here. If I were you, because I watch this with such jealousy - put a save point there and train yourself to shoot in pairs, firing only 1 bullet at each one if they're 1-shot killable. Can you imagine training for this shit?!?! It's so weird to think you might be better dual-wielding pistols in real life if you've played SSVR for hundreds of hours. so awesome! VR is just beginning... thanks for uploading this and sharing

Firing a real gun is completely different from firing a gun in a game, or arcade shooter. You have to account for recoil, the weight of the gun, wind, projectile drop, sight adjustment etc etc etc.

The best about watching these early VR videos and rediscovering old traditional gaming titles is the amazement in the reviewers as they slowly start seeing the true scale of things in the games, what they'd really be like in the world, as it is quite hard to imagine just by looking at a 2D image on a traditional monitor. Especially Serious Sam games, which are kind of known for having huge bosses, epic battles and crazy imaginative secrets. Good job communicating your thoughts and thank you for doing this, you've now played my dream :)
@craig1287
@craig1287 7 лет назад
Soon, you'll be playing the dream as well. VR is getting cheaper and better every day. Scale was a weird thing that I didn't think would be something I notice. It's was kind of funny when playing the VR mod for DOOM 3 BFG, I felt much shorter than I am (which is 6ft) and the guns all felt tiny in my hands.
@iodreamify
@iodreamify 7 лет назад
I am sure they're just getting the hang of everything. There will probably still be tons of tweaks down the road, that's what feedback is for. This here, while finally being a proper full-length title still feels like it was done for something other than VR. Doesn't mean it can't be fun. I mean you mentioning the abrupt stairs effect and people wondering if dual weapons with quick firing isn't overpowering the player. But this game here isn't necessarily something new, still feels like a playground for them with their best selling franchises. I'm glad they're doing this though. It's maturing. Thanks for responding btw, this here is 2 months old by now but i like good VR reviewers and i just discovered you through this so have my sub as well :)

iod One of the perks of a smaller channel, I can respond to every post and reply, and I capitalise on that. These devs are really going all in with VR. They made a VR specific SS game, they did this one, they announced that SS The Second Encounter and SS3 BFE will also get the VR treatment this year. Also, The Talos Principle will get a VR version. They patched the heck out of this release based on feedback. So yeah, they're doing great things for VR. Thanks for the sub. I hope you enjoy the rest of the content.

11:23 Actually many "Reboots" of certain Old Shooters (Doom and Shadow Warrior) are making it Wave-based because they are unable to make the graphics engine don't crash or slowdown the game when the enemies are place already without spawning in the maps. Serious Sam was the first game to use this mechanic in his engine, it may give a kind "Old school shooter" feel, but in reality the old school shooters have a level progression in their level design making you hunt keys to unlock doors and buttons that activated something in the map or change something withing the map and using backtracking, and the enemies are already place in the map but they have a strategic placing to make a encounter fun and challenge depending on the dificulty

aaw Serious Sam serie, still my fav' fps serie ( even if I discover the serie with the HD versions of TFE and TSE ). The fact you can use double shotgun and things like that and the weapons seem really more fast probably make the game a little more easy.

@craig1287

Early on, it was a risky thing to do this style of locomotion. I pushed myself very early on when VR released, using these kinds of locomotions and with zero comfort settings on. It got to me for sure (especially in the DOOM 3 mod), but now I am able to handle for a long time with no issues. Not everyone is willing to push themselves like that but I just really, really wanted to not use teleport. Now-a-days, a lot more VR games are released that do support this locomotion style, but a big reason for that is because of Croteam and the success they've had with their VR versions of the SS games.

I'm excited about this, ignoring the cynical nit-picking that can go on. It looks as though Croteam learned a Lot from last hope (I know seeing how that played was a ser - er, substantial disappointment) Dual-wielding does screw the balance somewhat but there's no denying how frigging cool that must feel. It'd be cool to see them take the foundations from this & work it into a truly new game & figure out tactical limitations (Like only 1 Minigun or Cannon, but gotta hold down both triggers to fire, aiming with left hand) But yeah, if I'm ever lucky enough to afford this, give it a few years VR could well be a sweet gig once it irons out the kinks. Thanks for the video, mister!
@craig1287
@craig1287 7 лет назад
I'm glad you liked the video. VR is in a very early state for the modern form of VR. So many developers, new and veteran, are all experimenting with... well... pretty much everything. Things like movement, interaction, and more are now completely new again. It's cool to be here from the start and see things as devs try them out and it will be cool in a year or five years from now to look back and laugh at the early design choices in games. Like when Goldeneye 64 came out how aiming in that was done. We now look at that and wonder how it was possible that we had so much fun playing that for hours and hours.
@Mr.Korzack
@Mr.Korzack 7 лет назад
Yeah, I'll happily concede to that, VR does feel a bit like inventing a new wheel (Or developing for the Wii, which-ever joke you want to roll with ;) ) But that's the beauty of new tech, see how it advances and develops. As you say, a lot of companies are pretty much starting from scratch, which explains turret games like Last Hope VR. The next few years look exciting but not without qualifiers, but that's growing pains for you. I apologise for my long-winded comments, I've always a habit of using 10 words then 1 would do haha. (SMILING LIKE A KILLER AT THE DUEL WELDING ANYTHING MECHANIC) I just found you Mr. small channel due to me reminiscing about my deep love of Serious Sam. While I am sad noone knows of it I am overjoyed at the fact that the out of every VR game I've seen so far this looks actually fun and almost better than playing normally, which for vr is saying alot. I know you tried to explain how you felt during gameplay but I wanna ask did the motion of running and gunning make it alot worse, because you did a lot of sitting in one place and firing, which could be a problem with higher difficulties when movement is key. Either way I definitely check you out more in the future, cause like me your very calm when you play.
@craig1287
@craig1287 7 лет назад
Thanks. I played this for a great deal longer after I cut the video and I never ran into any sense of motion sickness. To add to that, since I wasn't recording at that point, I was also playing a lot faster and better, much more akin to the play-style I normally have with games like Serious Sam. Commentating and playing VR is not an easy thing so splitting your concentration on the two... both are gonna suffer a bit. As for my play-style or the way I commentate, I try to be fairly calm and composed as much as possible. I really despise current trend in RU-vid gaming channels that the player must be some super animated, exaggerated, and over-the-top personality to succeed. One of the perks of being a small channel that doesn't treat YT as a job is that I don't have to resort to stuff like that. I can just play and act myself and hope that others out there will enjoy the honest approach.

Thanks for subscribing. I don't have many subs because I don't really market my channel. Doing RU-vid is a hobby of mine and I don't want it to become a job. I don't need for it to grow fast so I just let it grow naturally as people come across it and subscribe if they want to rather from me asking for likes and subscribes. I just recently passed 2,000 subscribers and sadly it came at a bad time when I ran into technical issues with getting my camera footage onto my desktop, but just last night I went and bought a new DSLR camera and will start recording my VR stuff again. Lots of new content to come.

@craig1287 7 лет назад
Have you played it in VR? It's very different than playing it in 2D on a monitor. Also, when I play games for these kinds of videos, I'm not playing to be competitive or anything like that. I'm just trying to show the game off. My mind is trying to thing of all the features that I can show the viewer and I'm also just trying to keep thinking of things to talk about. VR isn't something that you can full 'get' by watching a 2D RU-vid video, so I try to talk about the feeling of it and such to give the viewer (who most of which do not have VR nor have ever experienced it) the best idea of what's going on. All of that can be very distracting. Having said that, if you have any tips, please share.

Locomotion *pukes* I dont understand how you can cope with it. Normally I dont get sick of anything, but the abrupt motion between running and standing still almost throws my balance over IRL... While making me sick. To bad as many developers seem to only use Locomotion instead of teleportation etc.
@craig1287
@craig1287 7 лет назад
They did patch this game to update a lot of the motion systems. The one I'm using in this video did get an update so that the position of your finger on the touch pad does control the speed that you move, so for people like you that don't like the sudden jump in no movement to full sprint, you can now do a gradual speed increase. They have also been updating the teleportation, also adding in a blink version. They have also added support for mouse and keyboard as well as gamepad support so that you can now play it seated if you choose to.

But why the weapons dont have to reload anymore in VR? You can use dual-wield double barrelled shotgun and in additional to that you can use it apparently like a machinegun without the reload. And even dual-wield rocket launcher. Despite not having a mouse to aim, but this seems very op weapons to me.

This looks really good. But here are things that I don't like: Your own body is invisible in the game (Yeah, seeing floating weapons is just ugly.) You can carry 2 weapons at once (2 doublew barrel shotgun), which i think only makes the game too easy, in the original sam carry only 2 double barrel shotgun at a time, not 2. :/
@craig1287
@craig1287 7 лет назад
In the defense of why your body is invisible; there's no way for any consumer version of any VR system to track the body just yet (might get that with the Vive Trackers) and if you render it in game for your own body it will not be like how your actual body is in RL. This can make it very uncomfortable to the player and even lead to motion sickness. Some VR games pull it off, like Raw Data and it doesn't both me, though it might bother some people, which is why they offer the option to turn the body off.

This honestly looks like Easy to me :S I played this for the first time in VR yesterday, on normal, and the enemies did take more to kill I felt like. The scorpions should take more than a couple of shotgun blasts :P But the game felt great really, it was more difficult than using keyboard and mouse for sure. I would have preferred a traditional thumb stick, at least for the left controller, I felt like the track pad didn't behave as I wanted it to. The one I used was quite worn though and even physically didn't feel as crisp as it should. Overall though, I think VR will become even better pretty soon, and hopefully less expensive so the average gamer could feasibly buy a setup, because this is the future for sure :D

They haven't lowered the difficulty, but the game wasn't designed for all guns to have bottomless clips. The revolvers had infinite ammo, but after six shots each they'd need to reload. The double barrel would need almost two seconds to reload between EACH SHOT. Also for the frogs boss, don't forget you have the chainsaw.

The Vive can be purchased from a bunch of places for $100 off since it's the Vive 1-year birthday today. Not sure how much longer it will last. Places include Amazon, Newegg, and on the Microsoft store. If you don't yet have the PC for VR, they're getting cheaper and cheaper as time goes on as better low end GPUs come out that can push the frame-rates but also as better software releases that add new tricks to expand the range of what GPUs are able to now push the frame-rates high enough. Take a shot in the dark, a $550 USD PC can do VR and not get you motion sick with too many low frames, possibly a $500 if you look for deals, used, or can already have some components.

Not all games appeal to everyone, and that's okay. There's plenty of other VR shooters. I highly suggest Raw Data, Onward, The Brookheaven Experiment, Overkill VR, Bullet Sorrow, and SUPERHOT VR. Maybe one of those will be up your alley.

Glad you liked it. They have since released The Second Encounter and SS3: BFE for VR and they're all great. They've made improvements to their options and stuff for VR specific things. Maybe one day I'll get around to getting some footage up of those in co-op since they support up to eight players in co-op.

DAMNN!! Dude you are a beast with this game, i'm new to gaming period and i have few games like DOOM, but not sure how i would fair with this one, i don't use teleporting when i have the option and have not had any motion sickness of sorts. I wanna get this one though, it's soo damn fast paced though lol

@craig1287 7 лет назад
Oh yeah, this SS has been a blast to play in VR. I've gotten very comfortable with the speed and movement and it just feels so natural. Very much looking forward to more large scale shooters with trackpad movement. I do still want to see Arm-Swinger being used though since that's just as great.
@AlphaCrucis
@AlphaCrucis 7 лет назад
How susceptible are you to motion sickness though? I tried War Thunder in VR mode and as soon as I entered the cockpit I started feeling nauseous. I was still able to play for an hour though, but I didn't feel so great afterwards. I wish there was a free demo so I could see for myself.
@craig1287

I have gotten sick playing VR a few times, but it's always been for games that had VR added to them or a game that wasn't in the 1st person. The very first time I played Lucky's Tale on the Rift was pretty early on in my VR experience. I had only played a few things on my Vive at that point. Lucky's Tale is great and I no longer get sick playing it, but the first time I got a tad nauseous and I assume it was due to it being a 3rd person camera experience. The other time I got sick was playing the DOOM 3 BFG game with the VR mod to it and I was using the sprint a lot. I was completely fine in that game until I started using the sprint, and that one hit me hard. I had to lay down for ~10 minutes and I still felt it for a solid hour after that. Other than that, I've been okay with everything I've gone through.

@craig1287

VR is only getting cheaper and cheaper. The cost of building a PC powerfull enough is getting cheaper as hardware costs are coming down but also because lower end hardware is being added to the the "powerful enough" bunch as new software techniques get released (like Asynchronous Timewarp and Asynchronous Spacewarp). Also, the cost of the VR hardware itself is getting cheaper. It's now pretty easy to find the Vive for $100 less than what it launched for and it's safe to assume that the Vive 2.0 will release at a cheaper cost than what the current Vive will be at the release of the 2.0. Just keep saving up and by the time the 2.0 version is out, you'll be set.

how did swimming feel? did you ever get the hang of it? seems like a problem with locomotion theyll need to tackle before full release
@craig1287
@craig1287 7 лет назад
Yea, something is obviously wrong with the swimming speed. It did that before I made the video so I avoided water as much as I could in this video. I'm sure it will get patched soon. There is a thread about it on the Steam discussion and on the 21st the dev posted that it had been fixed. I haven't jumped in the water again, so I can't confirm if it fixed for me, but in looking at other people's comments in that thread, it looks like it got fixed.

I did not. I don't think they have any form of locomotion like that. If they added Arm-Swinger, I don't think it would work since the game is just too fast, but that would be a cool thing to have for swimming.

While it is fun, it doesn't really take advantage of VR room-scale. It's a fantastic shooter, but games like Sairento and Raw Data are incredible VR shooters that utilize the motion controls and room-scale in ways that really draw you in. Outside of shooters, Bomb-U! is still my favorite VR experience.
