The Fastest Way to Eradicate Invasive Species in Your Woods

I've heard it said before that when invasive plants are bad enough, it's not worth investing the time and money needed to get rid of them. I get it, it can be time consuming and expensive to tackle an area that has been taken over by non-native garbage. But the problem is, doing nothing will only make things worse and continue to lessen the value of your property. Committing to invasive species control is an investment into your property. Most folks aren't doing anything with their invasives. Working on eradicating them from your property will set your property apart from the neighbors. In this video, I showed how we tackled a large buckthorn removal project. We are less than 2 years into the project and it's incredible to see just how far we've come. I'm very encouraged by all the native plants we're seeing coming back to the property. I'll be sure to shoot a follow-up video this summer.

* For foliar treatment of buckthorn I treat them with a 5% solution of Triclopyr 4. For cut stump I treat the stump with a 25% solution of Triclopyr 4/ 75% diesel or crop oil. I like to mix in applicator dye with both solutions to see where I'm spraying easier. You end up using less chemical if you mix in dye.

Anyone that kills buckthorn on large scale is to be commended.

I am also starting to gear up for some major buckthorn work this summer. I would love to have a forestry mulcher. Local NRCS said there might be a program to recoup costs…but applications are getting approved for 2024 projects now…I’ll apply this year, but won’t know until 2025. I will be doing some this year with chainsaw and weed eater with blade….but mine is exactly like this video started out. A lot of mature stuff…approximately 40 acres to do. Maybe I should get the number of your buddy. Northern MN here too!

It is daunting when it's that thick but definitely doable. What part of MN are you in? We're Otter Tail county.

I've controlled on my property, but Unfortunately my neighbors don't. So every spring I brush cut the sprouts. Atleast the big ones are long dead.

Yah the birds will plant some. A good intentional day or two with the backpack sprayer normally goes a long ways to spot spray what is brought in from the neighbors

Central MN here..we cut and sprayed buckthorn on approximately 50 acres..it truly is a resilient plant..our's were anywhere from 1" to 3" in diameter..some bigger than that. Problem with buckthorn, is mainly the seeds..viable in the ground for many years..couple years of broadcast spraying probably isnt going to eradicate it to where your regrowth of native plants can get started..if i had to do it as you're doing it , I'd continue the spraying for several more years ,remove all the ironwood, possibly remove several of the oaks to allow ones left ,to produce better acorn crops..otherwise, the buckthorn seeds will just keep germinating..nothin out competes buckthorn ..good luck..enjoyed the video

Ultimately left unchecked buckthorn will outcompete, however it isn't' invincible as you imply. Depends on the condition of the ecosystem. If it has to compete it can be choked out. Need 2 years on focus area to turn it around then expansion of current structure and or introduction of native species and yearly monitoring to get things while easy to control.. I focus on nature structure and biodiversity not deer habitat so much of what you remove I'd encourage.

I used to think what you think but I've seen it is controllable. Look up the research article by the U of M on buckthorn seed viability. They found that 97% of buckthorn seeds germinate after one year....the idea that the seeds stay viable in the soil for years was essentially a bad game of telephone that no one actually confirmed to be true. Once I read that I was very encouraged to keep pushing hard with my buckthorn eradication endeavors. And the TSI pieces you mentioned are definitely all in play. We just started some cutting at the end of last summer. I wanted to get most of the buckthorn removed before I brought sunlight back to the forest floor.

what did it cost for the machine and drive?
@PFHabitat

$225/hr at that time. He's doubled the size of his machine since then and can get twice as much done so he's up to $275/hr now.

I'm guessing you're not worried about collateral damage when spraying that buck thorn to the mature trees and oaks?
@kenmaurer4743
@kenmaurer4743 6 месяцев назад
.I'm guessing he's using a generic roundup..that needs to be applied to the actively growing part of a plant..the leaves ,young growing stems/branches and or the cambian (sp) of a cut tree/shrub..over spray onto the bark of a mature oak won't harm them..plus I'm sure his over spraying is kept to a bare minimum, by the height of his sprayer boom

The diluted mixture ratio of a foliar application doesn't come close to what is needed for a true basal bark treatment so I don't experience any collateral damage.

I think I'm going to do this at my place this spring and then treat it with... goats.
@PFHabitat

If you remember, come back to this comment and share how it goes. I've always wanted to try goats but keep reading how they just spread it through their feces and you keep getting more buckthorn sprouting back. It seems like it would take years. But I still want to try it.
@PFHabitat

But if you mulch first and let the seeds germinate I could see goats working!
