Literally having this urge! I got a real big pay day for a big name hotel…and I want to “treat” myself so badly. But doing my best to just leave it alone.

Like the song says “Let it Be” 😁 However it is important to build treats into our budget. Otherwise we’ll go out and binge.

Great advice as usual. My day job was in health care, but I used the same principals you talk about. That allowed me to retire very early and be able to shoot images for my enjoyment and have as much equipment as I want, (which is way more than I need). And no matter how much equipment one has, it is the experience of using it to create images that impress yourself that is the most thrilling. I post much of my work on stock, not because it pays well, but just because it is a passive income from images I will take anyway.

The “treating your self” after getting paid is a real thing. I’ve bought new boots, gotten new tattoos, gone out for a nice dinner. But, I’ve slowly stopped doing those things. Especially after a couples clients took forever to pay on fairly large jobs.

Your words are inspirational. I click on all your new videos to see what advice you have to give. Thank you for taking time to pass on your professional experience and knowledge. So much of RU-vid is full of BS artists but you're an authentic, real deal person that I can look up to.

You just turned up on my feed today. I am liking your content and I really like the 5 minute videos. Not that you shouldn’t do videos of any length, but this works for saying that one thing well. Cheers!

What a hoot Scott, yes I completely agree with you, the problem is that at one stage my producer was in those shoes and instead of paying off the overdraft facility of 50k, and paying the staff account flush, so that there was wages for the next month or so, decided in her wisdom to run off to the Melbourne cup with her girlfriends, while I was on another shoot. It certainly does not take long b4 the debt mounts up, you have to release the staff, and you cannot afford a Christmas. :( Never again mate.. Apply KISS at all costs.

This is one of the best business advices no matter the industry. Before i buy something (unless necessary), I wait till after taxes. I wait, so I apply to apply it for next year taxes.

Interesting you mention this as I was talking to another pro photographer who'd spent £15k on mirrorless kit in the last year and he thought I was being very tight. I have a 80-200mm f/2.8 af-d screwdrive lens from 1997 which I bought 13 years ago as a student second hand and it's taken me through to photographing Dame Vanessa Redgrave at a very high end corporate event last year. It's only now I'm considering a replacement , and that's only because newer lenses have better AF accuracy and I might be in a place where I can afford it this year 😂 The lens hood is taped with gaffer tape as I broke the filter ring after a knock 9 years ago 😂

I struggle to get this into my step daughter's mind, and she's not even a photographer. It's solid advice for anyone, especially those who are just starting out. My step daughter spends her money just as fast, or in some cases faster, than she can make it. She's still living with us, and I hope she doesn't learn the same hard lessons I had to learn when I was her age and completely irresponsible with my own money.

You are absolutely spot on. My first photography business, actually videography, I fell prey to this. Hopefully, I'm wiser now, and my next business will fare better. It is incredible how wise someone as young as you can be. Larry from Texas

After my first ‘big’ job, I treated myself to a second body….. to match the 5Dii I was using that I bought to be able to get my first job. I took 10% and reinvested in the business. I realized I couldn’t afford to not have a back up.

Yup! This does apply to more than photography! Getting that bonus or other extra money, don't blow it on toys or things that will sit. I have a garage full of things that mostly were given to me because whomever I got them from went out to treat them self and got an "upgrade", now I have a garage full of crap! If you want to treat yourself, take the family out for an ice cream or a nice dinner and call it a day!

You could buy yourself a bottle of Askeys Treat Chocolate Dessert Sauce as a treat after each job. Doesn't hurt the bank account much, might not be great for your body though.

The "Time is money" stick is what RU-vid Tech reviewers tell everyone when they hype the newest Mac computer. "This one will process ProRes 17-seconds faster than the prior model...time is money...Blah...Blah...Blah...This video is sponsored by...". You are right...save your money, because you never know when the next job will come in, or when your kids need school kit.

Yeah like we got our 20-ish years old 50k Sinar technical camera still running perfectly only due to gaffers tape holding it all together :D

Might be worth getting the final payment before the final hi res photos are sent over?
@JustinSutcliffe-o4n

Payment before Hi-res download is not the way that Most of the high-end commercial photography world works. BtoB is different to BtoC.. Sad but true.

If your client will agree to that term in the contract. But contracts for all sorts of business things let the client make the final payment 30 days after the work is fully complete and handed over. If the client is a well established business you should be able to trust them to pay up and sue them if they fail to pay. But of course you always take on some risk that they'll pay late or never.

You’re a high end photographer, but it takes you 6 months to get paid. That doesn’t add up, I’m a B tier photographer all my clients pay in 7 days. Your agent is dodgy, the clients are paying in 7 days, but you’re waiting 6 months, I’d be concerned. Y

I'm working at starting a small portraiture business. A side hustle until i retire from my "day job". My few jobs are how I pay for new kit. I plan and save for what I want. I'm building up some studio basics. By the time I retire I should have enough kit to start renting studio space and dive in full time.

I used to justify a gear purchase by thinking, I'm investing in my business. After thirty years, I don't stress so much because I learned to save money and buy used gear if I absolutely need to buy it.

These are great points, early on in my career I spent more than I should have and my business and myself suffered because of it. Now I feel really really good when the back account has more money in it. I also feel better when I can take a day off. I second the save the money and shoot with what you have, I did this for 3 years with 1 camera and 1 lens. Awesome channel. :)

Every time I walk into a camera shop I say to myself, "look at all the wonderful things I have absolutely no use for." I will run equipment into the ground before I replace it. When I do shoots with film, I'm using 90 year old cameras I've had for 40 years because they get the job done as well as anything new.

Great reminder Scott. When the money finally comes in, my treat is reminding myself to let go of the tension that build up while I waited. Feels good. Then again, rational behaviour might be about as rare as ethical maturity. I'm sure it exists but it can be difficult to find or practice.🤪 Thanks for the fresh air.
