Absolutely no confusion for Best Actor in this category. Hopkins gives a masterclass, perhaps his best performance ever (I'm just going to say, it IS his BEST performance, EVER). Boseman would probably be wonderstruck and awed winning over Hopkins if he were alive. But that is, unfairly, what will happen. Coleman also deserves a second win, but there are valid arguments to the contrary. But if I had a vote, it would definitely be for her. Acting just does not get better than this. Period! Unfortunately, BEST is no longer the criteria for winning an Oscar, any longer!

I completely disagree. I empathized with Hopkins the most the whole film. it was from his point of view of how frightening it is to lose your memory and unable to understand what's happening. when he was confused, so were we. I feel that it was written that way, to feel solely his emotions from his narration

Agreed,out of all the films nominated for best editing this is the one film that realize most on it,considering it’s a non liner oreoinc film. As well as production design as it’s so clever how they kept on changing and blueing it. I’m predicting a win for the The father in Editing,because that to me it is what got best picture in over Ma Remeny, and I predict like last year 7/8 films will get one win,and the Father winning editing makes since.

Spoiler warning here! I was wondering if the reason why Antonhy talks about Lucy being his favorite, and why he's quite mean to Anne, it's that his subconcious knows that she has abandonned him while he's still holding on to his past life.
@ianfrias
@ianfrias 3 года назад
Wow, this is a great observation. You might be onto something!
@janechoy2073
@janechoy2073 3 года назад
I shivered during his speech when he said he'd outlive Ann and would inherit from her, and was generally being mean to Ann while Laura's in the room. If you think about it, this is genius because Laura reminds him of Lucy, whom he did outlive and probably was quite mad at himself for her death / his inability to save her as her father. and now this latent anger is coming out towards Anne as he's triggered by the sight of Laura.
@ianfrias
@ianfrias 3 года назад
@@janechoy2073 this is amazing. This scene was so incredibly layered!
@Usedtobebillie
@Usedtobebillie 3 года назад
@@janechoy2073 My interpretation it was the hurt from being abandonned by Anne. That's why he's so obsessd with the flat, because it was already taken from him twice, first time he was taken from his house to Anne's place, second time she left him in a nursing home. That's why the "flat" changes all the time, because his mind is fightin really hard to hold on to the idea that he's still in his flat. He keeps reliving the day he was left at the nursing home, and after that reality broke and it was the most devastating thing I've seen all year. Nomadland sucks in comparision to this film.

For someone who saw all 3 performances, I have no doubt in my mind that Anthony Hopkins is the clear winner. His performance in The Father was on another league of its own and yes, it was far stronger than Riz and Chadwick's. He's 83 years old and to play a character that explores the frailty of being that age, that must have been impossible to do but he did it so effortlessly and brilliantly. I can't help but think that performance has put his own mortality into questioning. I mean who's brave enough to take on that??

A few months ago my father was diagnosed with prefinal stage dimentia. My world collapsed and I lost the ground underneath my feet. Having said that, I knew sthg was wrong with my dad, however it is different when you face the inability of your loved parent in the doctors office to execute basic drawing skills that the testing required. Took me several days to loose the image of my father struggling on a piece of paper to draw a watch. I wanted to help him with the drawing but I knew I shouldn't. The scene is still vivid and kept me awake for several nights. What Antony Hopkins achieved with his performance was phenomenal. I relived several instances. He broke my heart. He made feel it was real. The funny thing is that Antonio in the movie has the same birthday as my father. Whether he wins the Oscar or not, he is true master. He has proven himself over the years. Respect, hands down. But I hope he wins. (pardon my mistakes in English, but it's not my native language)

I think it's the best performance Hopkins has given and if Boseman were still with us Hopkins would have steamrolled the category this awards season. He's so fantastic. Colman is great too. The movie is such a unique take on the subject matter and incredibly powerful. The ending had me sobbing and I was embarrassed to leave the theater. 😅 It's very devastating. I do think it should win Adapted Screenplay and Editing (that's really hard for me to say as a huge Promising Young Woman stan 😛). I think the reason it become my favorite movie of the year and why a lot of academy voters voted it,is becuse this film is accurate to the experience a family member goes though when they have their grandparent/perent get Dementia or alzheimer's. Half of my child hood was my mom taking care of my dad how was going through Dementia,. it ruined a lot of are plans,we would have to cancel fun things as a family to take care of him,I spent like every month in the hospital waiting room becuse my mom couldn’t leave me alone at home when she and my dad would have to take him to the hospital after doing something dumb. But the most reliable thing about the film that hit me, was Olivia Colman’s husband getting jealous of her taking care of her dad instead of taking care of him. I believe my Grandfathers demtia ruined my perents relationship,as even though she was taking care of his dad,he got jealous of my mom and also made him become depressed and aggressive as he was mad that he was too busy to care of his own perents

I saw the stage play of this in Killburn, London abiut 5 years ago... Had no idea what it was about as was just passing by and saw the actor Kenneth Cranham was in it who I always liked, and decided to buy a ticket on the spot. 2 hours later I was an emotional mess, incredible stuff. I haven't seen the movie yet, releases next week in the UK, but I expect it will be excellent.

Ridiculous that this comes out in Ireland in June. Should just come out on PVOD, like Judas.

I just watched this movie. I was so impressed with Olivia Colman's acting. I think she could have won her second Oscar if she had more screen time.

You can take each individual scene of Anthony Hopkins separately; each solo scene makes a case for both a Best Actor award, and the fact that this is absolutely the best performance of his career. Obviously, the consensus is that Boseman will win, and I truly have no problem with that, because I think these are two performances we'll be discussing for years. And I don't know why, but I want Olivia Colman to be my mother. This is made weird by the fact that she's 2 years and a month younger than me, but here we are. Maybe she could just be my "gay guy's best friend." I'd be cool with that, too. There are so many ways in which this movie is fantastic, most covered in the previous comments and by the brothers.

How does this compare against the other 2 movies adapted from a stage play - Ma Rainey and Miami? I haven't seen The Father yet but the other 2 definitely feels like they are stage plays adaptation.
@retrotero76

You are correct. They feel like stage plays, but The Father doesn’t. It uses cinematic tools.

Nonsense. This was the best performance of the century so far, as far as I'm concerned and very possibly Hopkins' career best (although I'm still very impressed by his extremely nuanced performance in the Remains of the Day and might put that on top instead).
