If we were to base the performance of flexibility on ones ability to demonstrate "feats of range" what would they be?
In this episode, I define the 6 feats of range that I deem worthy of this status as well as two honourable mentions.

Wow what a gold mine of a video. I particularly like how you were honest about timelines and about how much investment is required. Strength coaches will happily tell you that building up to a 2x bodyweight squat for example will take about 2-5 years. Bodybuilding coaches will tell you that a stage worthy physique takes 5-7 years. But flexibility coaches don't like to talk time frames so I'm glad you don't shy away from that

Thanks for sharing. It’s important to be honest with these things so people know what they’re getting into.

I think his timelines presume quality coaching and training smart to minimize iniury risk. Otherwise I would add a few more years to those for slow responders 😅

Thanks for the content and inspiration. My first child is turning one this week - as ive started making more time for my movement practice again, I've been thinking of goals to work towards that will set me up for longevity of movement and play. Seeing these feats of range and hearing the time scale in which you were able to achieve them gives me a good template for some mobility goals to work towards.

I love the deep dive! Your description of the feats with their prerequisites or targets are opening up such a new outlook on what flexibility training is. Congratulations on your research and for walking the walk and talking the talk!😊

Another solid bit of content. I'm struggling to choose my goals this winter... I want to work on my vertical and see if I can gain 6" on it and be able to dunk next year... I also want to learn the splits but I was that kid who couldn't even do them when I was 5 and every kid seemed to be able to. I also want to get really strong and work on squats now that my knees (after 14 years) are finally better. I have other choices too. Do you think if I contacted you for a splits program that it would take away from training for my vertical (assuming I choose those 2 goals)?

Not at all. If anything it would make for a good restorative session.

Thanks man, this is so useful. I've been training strength for years, but never really got into flexibility in any structural way. Would you say training all 6 of these simultaneously would be too optimistic? For example, split them up into 3 sessions of 2 positions each and train each session twice a week (A, B, C, A, B, C, rest)?
@rangeofstrength
@rangeofstrength Год назад
Anyone looking to start training for flexibility can benefit from structure this way it would just need to be with working towards the more foundational movement reviewed in the video. I recommend my podcast episode on “the basics” as a nice follow up to this

@@rangeofstrengthThanks a lot, I'll definitely check that out. Didn't find it on youtube, but I did find 'Episode 33: The Basics' on Muck Rack - that'll be the one, right? To at least make a start I just completed a session doing sets of standing pancake, seated elevated pancake, standing straight back hamstring stretch, jefferson curl, some bridge variation with my hands against a wall, and a very crappy bridge with elevated feet. I guess it's off to the races, thanks for the inspiration and information :)
