‘The feeling of knowing something is wrong, but it isn’t’
An intergenerational journey into the impact of hormones on our bodies, minds and identities.
Working in partnership with LifeLab (University of Southampton) and as a Propel Associate Artist at MAST Mayflower Studios.
In 2023 we had the privilege of working with 8 focus groups within the local community, using creativity to safely facilitate conversations and to understand everyone's unique journey from puberty to menopause.
In 2024 and with the support of local actors/theatre-makers we carefully explored real voices and stories to understand the challenges, inequalities, and most importantly, some of the advice that we can provide for the next generation. We presented some of these stories in a short 20 minute scratch theatre performance at MAST Mayflower Studios and were thrilled by the positive and supportive audience responses.

We found the stories were often shrouded in silence and shame across cultures and generations, with many of our community groups facing barriers such as healthcare inequities and miscommunication in families.
During the next phase of development we worked with local youth communities, empowering young people to open up these conversations, overcoming taboos and helping to foster a greater understanding of everyone's unique journey with hormonal health.
We engaged with young people from culturally diverse backgrounds (Black, Asian, Dual Heritage, and other ethnic groups) and LGBTQIA+ communities to broaden our understanding of narratives and perspectives.
Our aim is for audiences to see themselves reflected on stage, understanding how hormones can impact the body, mind, emotions, and sense of self from puberty through to menopause. We strive to normalise discussions, breaking the stigma and sharing real stories with young audiences through a community theatre performance in 2025.
