Recorded over several months. We were joined by two very special guests. Vocal charting by Tony Rose and Chad Odhner. Flute and horn charts by Jim Verdeur.
In 1965 my sister and I attended a Beach Boys Concert in Vancouver , our favorite song was Sloop John B , In 2015 my sister died from MS , after she passed I was in Vancouver taking many of her possessions to her friends around Vancouver , as I drove around I tuned in AM 650 , a 60s rock station on the radio , around 5 : 30 PM driving up Marine Drive , alone in the car, I asked my sister if she could play Sloop John B , as the Lord is my witness , seconds later it came on the radio , Rest in Peace Carey .
Nice story. Funny enough, I am from Vancouver and Sloop John B is my all time favorite song...especially the extended version. Also funny enough I used to listen to 650 all the time as a kid. And to make things even more funny, I coincidentally became friends with the Late Night DJ from 650 Kim Larson at the time as he suddenly started showing up to the church I attended. Crazy world we live in.
That's a wonderful story Greg and to borrow a line from the Bard "There are more things in Heaven and Earth then man ever dreamt. Look forward to your reunion wiith your sister alll in good time.
NOT a bad cover of a great Beach Boy classic. Earlier 2nite vie 3:22 wed Brian working with studio musicians on this very song. BTW saw Beach Boys twice in concert in the 1960's. Sadly Brian was no longer touring.
I can't believe what I hear. Never have I heard anyone capture the unique and dynamic vocal work of the Beach Boys. I don't care if it took 20 people to sing it, it is by far the best cover I've ever heard. Great job guys, I'm now seeking out your other works! If you want a real challenge....do Long Tall Texan, or Barbara Ann!
I am a retired, life long musician. The amount of forethought, and talent,in singing, and playing,is totally amazing! Brian would be proud of you! Such a moving piece of work, and done to perfection,.Great job! ❤❤❤
I am very picky about covers, and usually find a thousand things to complain about. Not with this one. This is without a doubt, the best cover I have ever heard. Well done folks. I hope you continue to share your talent with us
I'd love for the RU-vidr _"WIngs of Pegasus"_ to do one of his technical comparisons between this cover and the original using his audio equipment and software. I, for one, have listened to both of them consecutively and I can't hear and obvious differences
This song goes back to the Caribbean at least 100 years, no one knows who wrote it so anyone can record it without paying royalties, I have the Beach Boys on 45 but this montage was the best I've seen
Brian was painstakingly meticulous when he arranged this song and these guys & gal got as close to the original as I could ever hope to hear. Great job one and all.
I agree with you 1000 % . I just heard this for the first time today! I associate the song with the Kingston trio and was unaware of Beach Boys having recorded it . I will now go The Beach Boys recording! I am a fan of The Beach Boys but haven’t come across it !!!!
Larry Pfeffer But in keeping with the original, each part serves the whole sound and isn’t some huge, overwhelming sound for sake of just having a wall of sound. Each instrument and voice can be appreciated in itself or can be enjoyed in the wider harmonic richness.
The complexity of this arrangement is nothing short of stunning. Each time I listen to it, I not only hear the individual parts, I can feel them. It's a moving tribute that required an enormous amount of work to produce. Awesome!
Unbelievable arrangement! Superb vocals... Great lead & backup vocals... Perfect! The entire group of musicians could have not given a better performance. They were all in with heart & soul. Everyone put a lot of feeling into the song... you all made the songs words come alive! I have been around a long time, going to clubs, concerts and cruises, you guys are truly Great! Brian Wilson would be proud of your performance and your arrangement, which is a difficult one that Brian put together for the original Beach Boys hit song! Love you Fendertones... -DJ Sal - Boston, MA
I keep playing this song over and over. These folks nailed it totally. It's a true tribute to the incredible genius of Brian Wilson. Way to go, guys and lady.
This is a fantastic cover.. normally we can pick a handful of things we don't like but with this version it's put together very beautifully... brilliant lads very very beautifully sang by everyone
What makes this version great is because not even in studio with all the high tech equipment they use, and the harmony from these guy's spot on,,unique ,jcvw
I have been playing this at UNREASONABLEY LOUD volume, at least weekly, since it first showed up on RU-vid video, many years ago. NOTHING says 60's music for this 84 year old adolescent.........like this production does. So thankful that these folks like the BB's so much......to do them this proud. Thank you......again and again. ( hope you are still at it )
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. "I wanna go home" applies to just about everyone at one time or another after feeling defeated and hopeless which, in this life, is inevitable. So Beautiful, even therapeutic. Thank you Brian and Al! What a gift!
you know, I've never thought about it that way, but you're right - everyone's been stuck somewhere miserable, wanting to leave, but can't. good comment.
Wow makes you appreciate the genius of Brian Wilson, achieving this complex song by overdubbing. And the talent of the Fendertones who achieve the same effect without overdubbing.
I can't believe that I remember the words!!! I sang this in choir in high school!!!!!! And I hadn't heard it since!!! You all were phenomenal!!!! Thank you for a great memory from my high school days!!!
Depending on how many I've had, Sloop John B. makes my eyes misty, whether Beach Boys or Fendertones. The Fendertones are meticulous and impeccable in their vocal and instrumental renditions of The Beach Boys muscial legacy. I'll never know how they get such a vast number of muscians thus committed to muscial perfection with nary a hint of ego. Thank you Fendertones. Exceptionally well done!
I noticed this video this morning. I can't play any kind of an instrument and let me start singing every dog in the hood will start howling. However, it almost brings tears to my eyes remembering my weekends out in North Hollywood California in the late 1970s. I was in the Air Force then. Many of my friends loved to cover songs. Most of these friends are no longer alive. It was simply a different time! I miss those guys terribly.
At least you were there, those days I was cruising mid Canada and States, Wish in those I could have the time and gas to make it to California back in those days!
@@johnandersen6364 After I left the USAF I used my GI Bill and attended Georgia Tech. After I graduated I was offered what at the time was a fantastic job very close to that area. Of that group of people besides myself 4 others of about 25 survived to 2024. ALL 5 of us left California.
@@samshepard6235 Your comment reminded me of something else I forgot about my time in Southern California. Some friends and I made a day trip to the LA Zoo and spent some time at the Griffith Observatory. Anybody that has ever visited that area knows how large the parking lot is. That Saturday a man I identified as most likely Mexican was playing a single guitar and singing in Spanish a song that sounded and felt like a love ballad. We were standing next to our car and listening to him play. Nobody in our group could understand Spanish. Even today I can understand maybe 100 Spanish words. When I think about the 70s and my time in the USAF stationed in Southern California I most often think about all the concerts I attended, but then I also think about that guy playing his guitar. A different time and those times are most likely gone never to be repeated.
I sang in the male chorus at Ottawa Tech. this was one of the warm up songs we used before we went on stage,,, brings back many great memories.. Steve o
One of my favorite Beach Boy tunes and y'all's rendition is pitch perfect and on point. Got goose bumps. Acapella choir at school and church choir growing up, at 60 I'm still belting out the notes. Love harmonizing and you guys rock. 👌👍
This rendition is EXCELLENT... technically precise in its presentation... also, our favorite song in Vietnam, 1968... you’d hear it cranked up über loud through stereos we’d buy at the BX with our save $65 a month combat pay... our leadership hated that song as much as we hated the lying government command...
I don't give compliments like this loosely. That was one of the best renditions of this song ( my favorite Beach Boy song) I have ever heard, You guys NAILED it perfectly.
An unfair comparison really, as this one owes its entire existence to the Beach Boys version. The arrangement is pretty much note for note a replica of the Beach Boys recording, down to the second lead vocalist doing a full blown Mike Love impression.
WOW!!! Close my eyes and ya’ll smack my old butt back to my youth!!! What an awesome muscial generation to grow up in! We had it all ☮️ Thank you so very much!!! YA’LL NAILED IT!!! 👍🏻❤️👍🏻
My son inherited his grandfather's stereo system. He had it overhauled, and cleaned. I gave him my record collection and he plays all our wonderful songs.
Well, maybe learn to love music, or learn the power of music. Then get out of their way! My mom used music (in fact all art) as punishment. She was sick.
As a Vietnam vet 65 and 66 then in 68 69 Music like this read back good and add memories now I am 80 I am sad to see what a great country is today God bless United states of America
Great rendition. Can't stop listening to it. Heard this song the first time when I went dancing at the Log Cabin in Armonk, NY around 1963. Still loving it and these guys do a great job.
It's obvious when you listen to the version of this song by "The Kingston Trio" that Brian Wilson absolutely transformed this song into something amazing, but to actually see with your own eyes all the instruments and musicians that went into this is absolutely incredible. What a genius Brian Wilson is and what a masterpiece this song is! Well done Fendertones! ❤️
It was nice to see the drummer of the Cowsills and another member who was playing his guitar at his home in California and helping singing on Sloop John B and he also did arrangements with THE BEACH BOYS and seen him alot of their concerts! And was the music director for The Fendertones and joining them on this song and he did a fantastic job of showing them how to do the harmonies just like Brian Wilson did and Brian gave them the approval to sing their songs and as a true BEACH BOYS fan they did a fantastic job! Saw Mike Love talk about them and he didn't like it when I was watching CNN, not that many people go see the BEACH BOYS any more and it's not the same without Brian Wilson and AL JARDIN and also DAVID MARKS who joined them in the 60's before Murray Wilson fired him in 1963! It was Brian Wilson,Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and David Marks, and AL JARDIN came along after David Marks was fired because he was a little late for practice session with the other members! But I love the new sound and they are terrific, can't wait to see them in concert like I did with the BEACH BOYS and must of seen them at the Washington Monument in Washington DC! Thank you for showing this video & truly hope you have more for us to watch and see the whole concert, every song they played brings back alot of memories and I was there when they played at Live Aid and Farm AID with Willie Nelson & Kris Kristoffersons! Once again thank you very much, and The Fendertones sounded real great and great to see the drummer of the Cowsills and another member of the BEACH BOYS.
Wow, one of the best music videos I've seen in a while. How such a "simple" tune can be so "complicated"! Especially the bass line was brilliant executed. This rendition made me smile long after the video ended. Awesome!!!!!
Another great tribute band is from Adelaide, South Australia, called The Hindley Street Country Club. Don't be fooled by their name, for me, they are amazing!
Right, when the video showed somebody playing an upright bass, we could hear that sound. Seems like everybody should be able to do that, with all the electronic jiggery-pokery that we have, but they don’t.
@@davrambashere4421 Yes, the use of the upright bass and the electric bass doubling each other really gives this rendition a nice earthy, resonant tone that is so much richer and thicker than otherwise. Also that baritone saxophone really holds down the bottom nicely too!
This cover was flawlessly performed. These folks worked for perfection and attained. It was thoroughly entertaining and was every bit as good as the original recording. Well done people.
@Lenny Buttz Yes they really performed it but this video is where the song was recorded in different stages then put together. If you look closely some of the performers switch roles for instance the drummer in the purple top in one shot is playing the drums then he's harmonising in the next scene& the bass player in one scene is playing the stand up bass then in another scene he's playing the standard bass.
@@markstevenson7577 Yes, I thought it was quite obvious they switched roles and if they did actually record it and not lip sync it I also realize it was done in stages. It must have taken all day or maybe a whole weekend, what a waste of time. Apparently these people don't have much going on in their lives.
This could easily have played on the TV as a live concert in the early - mid 80s and would've fit in well. I miss those times. This song is like a great memory of the better parts of my early life
