We often speculate that the reason we can't hear aliens civilizations is because our SETI efforts (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) relies on radio and telescopes to weak to hear them. But how plausible is that? and what would it tell us about our own future?

@jasonchen9645 4 года назад
Storywalker4 You may be correct, however if the twentieth century has taught us anything it's that governments who actually implement large scale collectivism have done so in a militaristic way, that's fine if you like that sort of arrangement, and technological development is surpressed and controlled, which resulted in inferior products produced in those countries.
@ASB6765
@ASB6765 4 года назад
@@Storywalker4 I honestly disagree. True, highly authoritarian states gave us the pyramids, the great Wall of china, etc. However, I think a high degree of intellectual freedom and at least some degree of economic freedom is important for the spread of new ideas and technologies. Similarly, I think having a sense of citizenship that includes a role in chosing ones leaders allows people to feel like they have a stake in the system. I think democracy is very good for progress. It may not always be good at putting that progress towards the common good, Authoritarian states are good at maintaining stability. We may in fact go that way to protect us from our selves. Maybe under such a civilization, we would spread out to the solar system and nearby star systems because there would be the will and the resources to commit to such undertakings. This is also progress. Each type of society creates progress in it's own way

"The universe is full of life. But the universe is immense. And intelligent life living in the physical manifestation is scattered about a great and vast arena. It is concentrated in some places more than others. In some ways, it resembles the maps of your countries, where there are large areas where many human people are congregated, and there are areas where very few people live at all. Between these areas of great congregation, there are roads, great roads that are heavily traveled. In sparsely populated areas, there are very few roads, many of which are rarely if ever traveled. We want to give you this analogy of the dispersal of intelligent life in this Galaxy. We have never ventured beyond the Galaxy, so we cannot speak of the other possibilities. Yet within this Galaxy alone, there is such a diversity of life! We ourselves have only seen a very, very small part of it, for the Galaxy is very great. Your world exists in an area of congregation, an area that has many inhabited worlds. You do not see this within your own solar system, but beyond your solar system, this is most certainly true. You do not live in a sparsely populated part of the universe. You do not live in a region that is uncharted and unknown to others. This gives you certain disadvantages because your world is being scrutinized by many powerful forces. They are seeking an Intervention now because humanity has reached a point in its development where it has built the infrastructure that other races believe that they can use for themselves. This is why the Intervention did not happen at an earlier time. It was allowed for humanity to build the resources and the infrastructure first. In other words, you did the work for those who believe that you will serve them in the future." A quote from The Allies of Humanity briefings. You can read all four of the Allies books online for free at *alliesofhumanity-org* and educate yourselves with the wisdom and perspective given from our friends from space, in times of the greatest need for the human family to receive the guidance and encouragement for becoming a strong, united and a free race in a universe where freedom is rare and where strong prey upon the weak.

Too many believe in Aliens even though all extinct & extant life on Earth evolved from 5 unrelated cells in 1B years: 2 for fungi, 2 for plants and 1 for all micro/macroscopic life. *Think:* More bacteria have lived on Earth in the last 1B years than there are stars, planets & moons in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE yet only ONCE did two of those bacteria merge to form a cell that spawned all animal & plant life on Earth in the last 1B years. 1 generation of 1 TRILLION bacteria live and die on Earth every few days. We are lucky to be alive.
@polarisraven5613

@@hiqhduke Yeah, this is a point I read in the beginning of both, Micheal Chichton's novel Sphere, & The Kassa Gambit, one Isaac Arthur also noted, either as part of what he believes the most likely scenario for the Fermi Paradox, or as one of the plausible options on the table. Heck it's the point that made the theory of evolution click for me, perfectly addressing the last issue I had with the model. I find the fact that we're here now as not just multi cellular, or chordate (has a spine) life, all of which are incredibly uncommon groups to find yourself within, but as human beings, within the information age at that, is incredulous.
@squirlmy
@squirlmy 4 года назад
PS. Basically every Earth-like planet will have billions and billions of one-celled creatures replicating constantly. Even if life is one in a trillion, any planet supporting carbon-based life should eventually evolve multicellular life. Also your calculations aren't taking into account that these forms of life might have arisen many times, but just get eaten or otherwise destroyed by the life that became established previously. That all present life arose from very similar life (is genetically descended) doesn't mean they were the only forms that arose. Your logic is faulty.

If one technologically advanced civilisation has wanted to undertake interstellar travel and has tried to figure it out but failed to come up with a practical way of doing it, then chances are all technologically advanced civilisations have tried and failed, which means if we try we would end up failing. Physics and chemistry (as far as we know) is the same everywhere in the universe. And it is extremely likely that intelligence in technological civilisations is also the same (i.e. every civilisation gets its Einsteins and its Newtons and its Pythagorases). So if civilisations 10s of thousands of years more developed than us couldn't crack it, it is extremely arrogant to think that we will.

Thanks for mentioning the problems with compressed digitals signals looking like noise. I've been saying that for years but futurists seem to think that alients would use uncompressed analog data. And not digital signals with complex packets or frames and compression/encryption. It could still be detected due to the carrier, or look like a possible anomaly, but the contents would not be intelligible even for advanced civilizations with quantum computers and super giant antenna arrays.
@roblaquiere8220
@roblaquiere8220 4 года назад
If we receive a signal and it is compressed digitally, then it is likely the signal's intended target was not us. We would be ease-dropping on some alien HBO show without a decryption device! Aliens with an intention to communicate with a group that does not have decryption (like a new contact) would not use encrypted signals. I am a futurist and I believe first contact will be over unencrypted channels... because you cannot have a first contact on an encrypted channel!

Worldbuilders everywhere want to think up all kinds of reasons why this might happen or why civilizations regress or even vanish. There are historical examples where we just have no idea what happened, where they went or if they pretty much all died, etc. The spooky ones are where it just looks like everyone got up and left, and it's still spooky even though that's probably all there is to it. They'd probably not even intervene if we nuked ourselves to heck because who would want to give a race like that super cool alien technology if all they do is kill each other.

Depends on your definition of slavery. We are VERY fond of creating slaves. In fact, from a certain point of view you're probably surrounded by them right now. Really, the question in practice isn't 'Do I own any slaves' but 'how intelligent are my slaves?' I mean 'advanced, automated society' by definition essentially implies robot slavery. Granted, whether you actually care about the technicality that a robot which follows a simple program and cannot do much of anything else, nor has much of a 'life' to speak of... It's still a slave of sorts. Something you have doing work for you without it having any kind of say in the matter... So, in that regard, can you really ever say that we're free of slavery? If you're talking about human-level intelligence or something... Then the problem of advanced AI crops up. I might not consider the computer I'm typing on right now a slave... But what if, 40 years from now I have an android maid? I 'own' that android. The nature of it's intelligence may not line up with that of a human, but it is reasonably comparable... I don't pay it. It does whatever I tell it to (within reason), and generally does the things I don't feel like doing... Is that a slave? Because it sounds like one to me... Would it make it better if it was less intelligent? Would it make it better if it enjoyed it's work? See what I mean? It's very hard to avoid scenarios where there are not slaves of some description, because in the end it often devolves into an argument about the nature of life, individuality, choice and so on. Do I know that my computer is OK with what I do with it? Well I can't exactly ask it, and I generally don't even consider the question in the first place. But just because it cannot communicate it's desires to me, does that mean it stops being a slave? What about if that hypothetical robot maid has similar rights to a human being? I would have to pay for it's services and it can choose not to work for me (even if the pay is very low by our standards) Does that make it OK now? How about if we forced this situation on the android against it's wishes just to make ourselves feel less guilty? After all, it was purpose-built to be a servant (very definition of a slave race, really, isn't it?), and if it's programming is in line with that, it might be upset by the extra steps it has to go through now to fulfill it's own desires... Extra steps we introduced solely to make us feel less guilty about the slave labour surrounding us... Then again, you could make the same argument about having a job, given the consequences for most people of actually quitting their job... That's technically not slavery, but... Where do you draw the line? Being forced by threat of (indirect) death to spend a substantial chunk of your time doing what someone else tells you to is... Anyway, do you see how confusing this gets? Where's the line between slavery and just having a job? Where's the line between a living thing where the idea of slavery holds meaning and an inanimate object where it does not? It's not as simple as saying one is a slave and another is not... The delineation can get pretty vague at times for a wide variety of reasons. People that are officially considered slaves may in fact have more freedoms than some groups which are not. Where do animals factor into this? If I keep a horse in a field and force it to carry me around, does that make the horse a slave? Why, or why not? Is my pet cat a slave? After all, if I tried to keep a human as a pet that likely wouldn't be well regarded, and the most likely accusation would be that I own a slave, regardless of how I treat that person... This is a really messy subject once you actually try to consider what slavery actually is in a broader context...

Honestly I think the silent conversation hypothesis is probably the most likely solution (where alien civilizations do exist and do communicate, possibly regularly, we just can't hear it). As is mentioned in the video, the milky way is full of background noise, and while it is possible to overcome this problem with directed signals on certain frequencies, it does illustrate one issue with radio. I've seen it argued that advanced civilizations would communicate with neutrinos instead, as they're able to pass through matter with ease (a single neutrino can pass through the entirety of Earth's core without ever hitting another molecule). They move at speeds comparable to radio signals, however they pass through matter with ease and thus don't suffer the same problems of interference. This seems like a much better communications solution than radio, and it would be far less energy intensive, but would be a communication method only possible for more advanced civilizations. We are only able to detect a few neutrinos at a time, so if alien civilizations were communicating with one another then we would be unable to detect it. This is more an example of my point than a specific solution, but I think the possibility of extraterrestrial civilizations (especially ones more advanced than our own civilization) using other forms of communication than radio should be considered and is perhaps even likely.

in space, transfer of personnel and material is regulated and monitored, and if we're talking long distances word of an infection braking out will reach the destination long before the ship carrying the potential infected(hell, depending on the illness, they might go through the whole sickness and be infection free by the time they get where they were going anyway). basically, quarantine is supper easy in space, as things need to be airtight, filtered, cleaned, monitored, etc. anyway.
