The trees he is talking about are called serotonous it is when the seed of a plant is released due to an environmental trigger as opposed to being released upon maturity. Near where I live it is jack pine that are serotonous, this is because jack pine are a shade intolerant tree so after a fire the cones seed due to the heat but because of the fire they dont have any shade meaning they grow best.

in case anyone hasn't talked about the bit around 33:00 , the Moriori were the original indigenous people of New Zealand before the Maori migrated from their original Pacific islands. The Moriori were a relatively peaceful people, then the arrived Maori killed and ate the Moriori, colonizing New Zealand and claiming it for their own. If you discuss the instance of the Moriori being killed and eaten by the Maori to a Maori person, chances are they won't admit that it happened (at least this is the case for Northland Ngapuhi Maori). This is my understanding of it at least.

The vampire dude also played one of the two characters in The Lighthouse which is a psychological horror about, well two people stuck on a remote lighthouse during a storm. It's got Willam Defoe as the other guy. Filmed in a format from the 1930s or something like that. Its actually pretty soooky and the acting from both sides is actually quite phenomenal, especially Willam Defoe's. Definitely worth a watch imo.
