@@MemmyrabiliaSurprisingly he has changed so much now. He's engaged to a woman who is really into everything all natural and feminist (she also announced she doesn't shave), grew out his hair, and even has 2 kids now. He is vegan to help with environmental conservation, is also a feminist, advocates for literally every problem, and is heavily into nature. He also does wholesome family updates now and all of his social media's are just him enjoying life with his family. I was truly shocked when I learned about all of this. I always think of him as that one guy from vine 😭
the magcon boys were annoying af at the time but if they actually briefly unionized for 1k each and a new pair of beats, that is so unbelievably funny. dareisay: iconic.
Ashley: I'm not sure what they're famous for Well if you read the Very Reliable Middle Schooler Prezi source, you would see they've been out there, fighting to save teenage girls' lives. That is their sole purpose and description. Which somehow makes the unionization even funnier.
as a former Shawn Mendes fan it makes a hilarious amount of sense to me that Shawn would simply sing and dissociate the entire time he was at magcon considering nowadays he never talks about it publicly and you almost get the impression that he wants to forget that it ever happened in the first place
@@abrielle13 yeah I used to have a huge crush on him and loved his acoustic stuff when I was thirteen but my music taste has really grown and changed with time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I still have a special place in my heart for him though
He probably has nothing to say about it because he was too dissociated to remember anything 😂 The brain is commonly known for blocking out traumatic events
Your side-note about family-channel youtubers going on tour with small children reminded me of that: in 1763, Wolfgang Mozart's parents took him and his similarly talented older-sister, Maria Anna, on a tour around Europe when they were 7 and 11 for 3 years. The kids had gained some notoriety the year before when they played for an empress in Vienna, and their parents we cashing in on the attention. Just a historical reminder that parents have been going on tour to capitalize on their children's fame for centuries. *[I'm typing this only a minute into the video so as not to forget to post it]*
A fun historical anecdote is that a child Mozart allegedly played for a child Marie Antoinette (she was one of the daughters of Maria Theresa, the empress mentioned above). They would have been about the same age, Mozart 6 and Marie Antoinette 7.
Simplynailogical talked about these tours on her podcast because she was constantly asked to do them. She said she always turned them down because she had nothing to offer an audience on a stage beyond the little one hour show things she did at vidcon, so it wouldn’t make sense. And every time, these companies always told her it doesn’t matter, because kids will pay for it anyway. I wish more influencers were just smart, good hearted people like her 😕
i get this, trust me i do, but you also have to see the other side of it.. these influencers were teens/ young adults! probably really excited abt an opportunity as big as going on tour! it’s awful that these big companies saw the profit on this, but you genuinely can’t blame the influencers for taking on such an opportunity..
Yeah I agree, at that age and probably even at this age, it seems like a fun way to earn money. I wouldn't do it because I like being "anonymous" in this world but I don't blame teenagers and young adults for grabbing that opportunity. Who didn't wanna be a youtuber in those eras tbh@@moppotae
@@moppotaeyeah I can’t lie, if someone offered me when I was 18 to go on tour, make good money and gain even more of a social following, I wouldn’t think twice. I’d try to come up with real talent/skills to showcase, but I can’t really judge these people for taking the opportunity given to them.
I just wanna say I'm so glad that we're finally recognizing how the tana situation was a lot more complicated than just "idubbz uses racial slur to own dumb youtube female" bc there's so many parts of that whole thing that just seem wild nowadays. Like, why did we all just let a bunch of white influencers lead the discussion on use of racial slurs like they had any semblance of authority on it? And why did the internet as a whole seem to think hypocrisy was a mistake that somehow excused any and all retaliation (up to and including trying to end her whole ass career)?? And, i get youtube was up in its anti-femoid bag back then, but people forget that less than two years before the idubbz incident, another female youtuber, Christina Grimmie was literally shot and killed at a meet and greet, but everyone treated tana's apparent anxiety around the situation as completely unfounded. Not saying her reaction was totally warranted or that she didn't have her own clown moments too, but that public reaction and subsequent discourse was the whole ass circus.
no bc everyone was just cool w idubbz saying it constantly and praising but in the same breath calling her out for it? so stupid even my 9-10 year old self was perplexed
who is this everyone yall are talking about though, i never heard about the drama except from people condemning both idubbz and tana 😭 he had the worst excuse for it too, claiming that by saying it he was "removing its power to hurt" or some shit idk
@disappointment3090tea channels *really* had a thing with tana Like the Brittany spears of RU-vid where everyone is just default dog piling on her instead of thinking about the situation for a sec At least what it felt like to me (and this is not to say tana the chronic scammer is a saint, just that there was an imbalance in how the situation was portrayed)
I just read about the story of Christina Grimmie and it infuriates me so much that that guy escaped justice. Ashley is already an attorney but like her I want to go into law, specifically to be a prosecutor and put people like this away. I realize that in her case it wouldn't have helped since they weren't able to catch him before he offed himself, but still, I can't help but feel so enraged when I read about things like that... so sad and purposeless.
I'm not American but when I first saw that video I did think that it made sense in a way in what he was saying Why can't it just be a universal standard that bad word = bad word and not bad word = but we made exceptions that certain people can use it and give it a different meaning *but* they are the only ones who is allowed to say it It really doesn't make any sense for someone who lives outside America to go with that logic in that way since isn't that double standards and at the same time your still confusing people on what that word stands for in today's time
Hi, I'm former venue security of AEG Presents. Crying, screaming teenagers outside a tour bus is way more common on influencer tours than music tours. Music tours the fans are more chill. You can't understand till you've seen it but its true.
Dan and Phil’s, Danny and Drew’s, and Kurtis Conner’s were the best of all the RU-vid tours. There’s a reason Dan is actually on tour rn and kurtis continues to do them regularly.
Commenting to follow, I haven’t heard anything directly but my intuition is that his stand up wouldn’t good. I say this as someone who loves his channel, he just hasn’t given me any indication that he’d be good at stand up.
@@elliequent02 I’m honestly going off of what I’ve heard of other peoples experiences that have gone of them enjoying themselves and the shows not being total shit shows like the rest of these LOL. When I say there’s a reason they still go on tour I mean there are people still willing to spend money to buy their tickets. I personally hate things like concerts/shows because I’m autistic. I also don’t enjoy or honestly understand stand up comedy so even if I did go I wouldn’t be a great person to ask LMAO.
I went to his 2019 tour and the opening act, Captain Kalvis, was a lot funnier. It definitely wasn’t money wasted, I genuinely had an amazing time watching Kurtis and the vibes were so awesome the whole show, but you could tell a lot of people only laughed at his jokes because he was Kurtis. Tbh I’d probably go again.
as an edgy 'not like other girls' girl i watched a lot of idubbz and i remember when he released that content cop so when you started talking about tana i immediately knew where you were going. im out of that phase now and i still cannot believe that actually happened
oh my godd so did i.. i had an irl friend who watched him too and we bonded over being the only 14 year old girls we knew who watched filthy frank + others in that circle it was super weird.. i put up with so many jokes at my expense because im openly queer and jewish, glad i grew up and surround myself with much better people now
I used to be obsessed with iDubbz before I realised I'm transmasc lmaooo what a journey. Also i have this weird mandela effect with that Tana incident, I could have sworn the event iDubbz crashed and tanacon were the same thing and that's why tanacon was so widely talked about, like I vividly remember them happening at the same time and I get whiplash when i realise the 2 events were like a year apart. Guess I'm from the berenstein universe lmao
I screamed at the brief Rebecca Black praise. I saw her live in Glasgow last week and she was fucking amazing. The vibes were literally impeccable, definitely one of the best shows I've ever been at
I feel SO BAD for Caleb. Dude was just trying to make some money and he got scammed. He’s got a mark on his record because he was given misinformation. He seems like a good dude who got exploited.
That's what I'm saying and especially when he said he was sorry for letting his fans down. That literally almost broke me. He actually seems so sweet and really wanted to go.
I am lucky enough to have attended both of Dan and Phil’s tours and they were genuinely fantastic. You could tell that a lot of effort and love for the fans went into both tours and the energy in those theatres was the most joyful and electric I’ve ever experienced. I still look back on my meet and greet photos and watch the tour movie when I’m feeling down and it always cheers me up. It makes me so sad to hear about creators that clearly have so little respect for their audience and put on no-effort tours as a cash grab.
I went to Interactive Introverts and We're All Doomed, and the production value was unbelievable. I saw Interactive Introverts on my 15th birthday and it was an experience I will never forget. I didn't have the opportunity to do a meet and greet but I have heard really good things.
i’ve always thought the same thing!! dan and phil shows were on such a higher level compared to youtuber tours. i’ve only been to ii and we’re all doomed but those were amazing experiences that were super special :)
@LordofFullmetal Tbf to Idubbz he fully like acknowledged that it is his fault, and apologized to Tana. And said his views on slurs back then were wrong
@@peytonlong2000right like he’s not so much as upset as he is disgusted with the fanbase he had cultivated. and he took full ownership and recognized that the blame was fully on him, so i can appreciate that since he can’t go back in time and undo the incel army he created lol
I’m losing my mind that you mentioned “these teenagers should be making minimum wage” in presumed reference to baby-faced, braced-up Caleb Finn… who I then proceeded to search and found is TWENTY-EIGHT years old. I’m still trying to process this. The man looks 14!
@@Mskittenlover12 I didn’t even realize Christina was shot …. That’s awful. I knew that she was taken too young but I had no idea it was a violent crime. That’s awful. Rest in peace
As a South American viewer who's had little to no contact with most of the topics you cover in your channel, I'm always amazed to learn about such U.S. American stuff and hear personal rearview insight from a true veteran herself. Thank you for your service truly
As a South American (Brazilian), Magcon used to be my shit!!! Kinda embarrassing... but I have to say that it was fun. Being cringey as a preteen builds character 😂😂
The saddest part of this video (at the end) was when Caleb got turned back. I remember when all this happened and he was DEVISTATED. He was a teacher and seems like a pretty normal person. It was such an awful situation.
Ok I blocked out the james Charles tour but as soon as you mentioned it I remembered how pricey the tickets were and thinking how big of an ego James has. I didn't realize it got canceled lol
The sad thing is on the second girls night in tour, gabi had multiple breakdowns and didn’t even want to do the tour because of her anxiety, but because her and niki were twins and branded themselves as a duo, the company wouldn’t let niki go if gabi didn’t . Alisha was also paid more than the rest of the girls because she was the most popular
ive been to both dan and phil tours and dans solo tour and they have all been so insane fun. their second tour interactive introverts was less 2010s youtube/tumblr and maybe a bit easier for non phan obsessives to get into but was equally insane. nothing but good memories honestly
I finally lived my middle school dream of seeing Dan Howell on tour last November in his We're All Doomed tour and had a great time. It was the perfect combination of incredibly nostalgic callbacks to old Dan videos, fun musical/comedy bits and sincerity. While some RU-vidr tours can be awful when they're done by genuine entertainers they can be great for fans.
That whole mess with Caleb's tour in particular is kinda heartbreaking, that sounds like an awful experience in multiple aspects. Trent, my man, what the hell is wrong with you...?
i was around when that was all happening and it was genuinely infuriating. he streamed on twitch at the time and he told the entire story on there and it was a mess. eventually he went to america but not with the lights out tour.
The fact Trent never got held accountable for it makes me angry and I never even followed/particularly liked Caleb or any of the tiktok guys. That whole situation is so messy and sad...
For my 19th birthday I went to the Danny and drew tour with my mom, we had to go out of town and everything and got a nice hotel. Great memory, very fun trip!
As someone who didn't know a single one of the people mentioned in this video, all I can say is that these tours are basically the epitome of pretty privilage.
I have to add that I actually attended the 2017 Love is Love tour with Shannon, Rebecca, and Miles... it was a trainwreck. I think I'm one of the only people that attended that tour and I was ecstatic I literally traveled 3 hours to go for some reason. Nothing happened. Rebecca sang Friday, Miles tried on costumes and danced around the stage and Shannon actually talked about her life as a queer person and gave advice for coming out which was actually nice but there was no cohesion whatsoever it was so strange and I can't believe I did that
50:53 Immigration lawyer here. I used to do a lot of entertainment visas, and I’m chiming in because you’re right, they make it complicated on purpose. ESTA isn’t a visa. It’s a substitute for a tourist visa available to nationals from countries that have specific agreements with the US. Getting paid in any way by any entity in any location while working in the US requires an employment-based visa. Any unauthorized work can get your ESTA revoked and future immigration benefits denied. There used to be an exception to this, called the “showcase exception.” This allowed bands to perform at SXSW for official SXSW events. Problem is, it doesn’t make financial sense to come to the US to do just one show. Look up the band Soviet Soviet. They were detained and sent right back to Italy because CBP found evidence that they were going to play unofficial events.
i will honestly never forget seeing dan and phil for TATINOF. that show was like. next level amazing, you could really tell that that they really cared about making a quality show for their audience. my mom managed to get tickets despite how broke we were and let me miss school for two days to go. when i look at the pictures she took from that day of me wearing my Cat Whiskers Come From Within shirt and a lion hat i cringe a little, but mostly i look at how happy i was at a time when i was severely Not Okay lol. lowkey still sad i missed Interactive Introverts and We’re All Doomed, but i’ll forever be grateful to my mom for tatinof.
In October I saw Dan on his tour. It was the first time I saw a RU-vidr show, and as someone who’s been a huge fan of Dan since middle school (I’m in college now) I had a great time. My mom came with me and even thought it was great. You can tell Dan actually enjoyed being on tour and putting on shows for his fans. Edit: I follow Caleb and hearing again the whole story about him and the whole lights out shit show is so upsetting
honestly the girls night in set with the little bedroom is so cute and a really nice backdrop. a very awkward show overall it seems but the set was cute
There is a reality out there where Shawn mendes didn’t make it in music, went to RU-vid during the vine invasion and became a commentary RU-vidr. Hell maybe he opened during the we are two different people tour.
45:04 so the guy who keeps saying shoutout is currently MGK’s protege and it was SO JARRING to see him in this footage. The tours truly got to everybody
I went to the tour is not on fire for my 14th birthday with my bestie, cat whiskers and flower crowns on. It was high production and had musical theatre numbers, acting, skits and the revelation of their sim sabotaging the show from the start. It was genuinely fantastic for that era.
this video gave me such whiplash especially that tana and idubbbz situation i completely blocked it out of my mind god what a horrible era of youtube content
I would love to see you break down the tours that actually had effort put in (We are Two Different People, Interactive Introverts, Tour of Mythically, Tiny Meat Gang Tour, etc.) even though some of them aren’t necessarily my favorite creators they definitely put effort in & it’d be cool to see what makes a “good tour” vs whatever MAGcon was…
I have held this in for years and now I can mention it lol: James Charles was supposed to come to my hometown during his tour-which is an odd choice because my town is mid-sized, 3 hours outside LA, and Republican. There was a giant billboard right outside my dad’s office window with James Charles’ face on it for weeks and everyone was joking about him coming to visit. And then it was CANCELLED. It was both relieving to everyone he wasn’t coming cause people found him annoying and saddening that we’d missed out on this very surreal experience
That is, indeed, absurd. I wonder if your town had a demographic mix where they figured there would be a lot of James Charles fans (teenage girls) with middle/upper class parents who could hypothetically afford tickets.
The reason I like watching Ashley Norton is because I feel like I'm getting the point of view of someone who's a normal person, while everyone else on youtube is trying too hard to be an absolute whacko.
i went to go see tana in 2017 when she did the “tana and friends tour” i was 11 or so at the time and i still have my video of when i met her 😭 it was pretty awkward and i spent $150 on that.
I'm so glad that 15-year-old me was too lazy to deal with the amount of scheduling it took to go to a show and decided not to buy a ticket to Playlist. It also helped that I arrived late to the obsession of the RU-vid influencers' tours. I will gladly take being someone who used to read Wattpad than being someone who bought a ticket to see Magcon.
........................man, say what you want about kpop, but when they perform and interact with fans they go IN. these youtuber tours are, like you said, fever dream material, i'm appalled.
i for some reason or another missed every aspect of the peak vlog era despite being in the right age demographic for it! learning the tea starting in quarantine has been a wild ride for me haha. with that said, i am so unsurprised that the sleepver female answer to magcon had WAY more production effort put into it
would you ever consider doing a video on those song parody channels like the key of awesome or bart baker (seriously what happened to him) cause that time in youtube history was also such a fever dream
i was a legit CHILD when i was a magcon stan idk what i was doing gushing over vine boys and to hear that the original lineup only existed as long as it did is surprising lmao. i was also a lights out tour girlie (it was a dark time) for a little while so i can concur that it’s the next generation’s magcon. i didn’t know the logistics behind each organizations but i do remember when magcon first fell apart and bart being corrupt. i also didn’t know the details about caleb omg
I’ve never watched your content before but for me to sit for an hour long video about creators I’ve really never watched or cared about is really something. New subscriber
Rhett and Link's Tour of Mythicality was honestly awesome!! They had an existing huge and talented team so that kinda sets them apart from other RU-vidr tours, but since they have a lot of music and entertainment in their background, it really felt like an amazing show that fit with the existing channel.
This video is good because I don't recall ever hearing about most of these people who were apparently the most popular youtubers in the world at the time (i was even in their initial target demographic at the time) and it scares me but I'm so captivated by the history I can't stop watching
Loved this video so much! Exactly my kind of history analysis! Although thing I was wondering about was the strange music at 33:56 & 50:53? It's v weird cos it covers up the sound of what you are saying, I'm not complaining, it's just a tiny thing, but interested if there is a reason
I just saw Ashley leave a comment saying "Okay so strange those portions got copyright claimed so I replaced the audio but the clips got removed and the replaced audio is still there" so that's the reason if anyone else was also confused :)
I’ve seen Dan and Phil’s two tours, and most recently I saw Dan’s solo tour We’re All Doomed. It was so good. It had humour (was a comedy show), it had theatrics, fun audience interaction, impressive lighting and fun props and effects, and it had a meaningful conversation about mental health that really resonated with me. It’s also been so nice seeing the videos of him meeting fans on tour. I wasn’t able to get a meet and greet, but you can tell in all the footage of him meeting fans that he really does care about his viewers. He almost seems as happy to meet the fans as they are to meet him. He’s been saying this is the happiest he’s ever been and I believe it when I look at him. I watched this video because a fellow Phannie on Twitter actually mentioned it lol. Good video. Seeing what other creators have done when given the opportunity to tour really makes me appreciate all the effort, creativity, and heart that Dan put in to his show. I’m going to subscribe, so I’m glad I saw you recommended and can’t wait to see more from you.
I'm so sad to say that I, too, watched "Chasing Cameron" when it came out lol. I was in horrible withdrawals at the time, so the show really was a fever dream, esp because I hadn't known of magcon before then.
poor caleb, that actually makes me so sad and i don’t even know who he is. what a roller coaster of emotions, and the worst part is that because he’s banned from making money in the US for 10 years, he’ll probably never have another opportunity to do a different US tour :( truly a horrible situation for him, trent should be ashamed
haven’t even gotten to two mins yet but you said that this video .. which is an hour long ..was a break after working on long videos .. immediately i am a fan.
i feel so bad for that e-boy who was conned into flying to america, but also i couldn’t stop laughing while he was crying bc i realized he sounds exactly like Prue from Kath and Kim
I was about 13 when Magcon and Vine were this popular, this feels like a fever dream. I went to digitour in 2014 lol. Thanks for letting me revisit one of the most cringey eras of my entire life.
the footage of the dobre brothers just reminded me at digitour they had all the boys in a line and just pushed fans through to take pictures, They had a tour worker grabbing your cellphone and snapping the pictures, like a drive thru lmaooo
I live in NZ and not many people come here, then a couple of weeks ago Dan Howell was here. Kinda pleased he still has his thing going but also shocked tours are still a thing 😂❤
I will say as someone who went to see Interactive Introverts, it was 100% worth it and actually entertaining. Dan and Phil were sweethearts and genuinely funny.
Oh my god I wasn't expecting Caleb to be Australian as a fellow Aussie. Apparently he's from Frankston, which is very funny for reasons I cannot put into words
Awww Meg Deangelis was around the same time as Eva and Alisha, but went a little more under the radar. She’s so sweet! She’s on TikTok now! On of those people you feel like you’re on FaceTime with
