You are totally wrong, nothing happened during this battle which would result in a penalty today. I've lost count of how many times I posted a link to this battle, in order to prove that today's rules promote hard racing, when confronted by the less informed claiming this rules hinder it. It's worth remembering this happened in 1979, 5 years before Senna arrived in F1 and brought bullying with him to the tracks, which resulted in the need for these draconian regulations to maintain discipline on the tracks. Here is the battle on all of its glory, try to spot a single reason for a penalty under today's rules and you will realise there wasn't any: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ogTx_7a9A90.htmlsi=_zOrMo-owgSgmOwE

I remember seeing that live. The commentary was every bit as excitable lol. When I saw the title of the video come up, no pics yet on the page (just opened the app and it takes a mo), my initial thought was Mansell vs Piquet, followed very closely by this one. I'm not saying the MvP was better, far from it, but I'd been reminded of it more recently. You made the right choice, that was epic! Funnily enough, if you look in today's paddock, especially after a podium fight, you'll still see two excited guys clasping shoulders, shaking hands, talking nineteen to the dozen as they describe their best moves, and they are still grinning at the boring press talk. I give you Alonso and Checo in Brazil last year. They were like a pair of excited 6 year-olds having just done their first dives into a swimming pool or something. It was delightful!

I am a 54 year old Canadian and I was robbed. In 1982 the F1 race was coming to Detroit for the first time. All I wanted to do was see Gilles. Just one race before Detroit, his life was claimed. That would have been the first of 80 GP I would attend in my life. I remember the very first view of an F1 car I had. It was Michele Alboreto in the Tyrrell-011. The sound of that normally asperated Ford DFV got me hooked right away. The echoing off of the Renaissance Buildings was so intense. The next year when we came back I was in tears. I asked my dad what happened to the noise of the cars. He said "Turbos son". I would not hear that normally asperated sound again until 1989. GREAT JOB ON THIS VIDEO JOSH!

There's at least a minute worth of penalty's in todays standards. We need more of these battles today.
@paulomarinho1963
@paulomarinho1963 5 месяцев назад
Today's rules are designed to promote battles just like this one and when drivers fight within the rules we had very hard battles on track. The problem is that, among today drivers, only Alonso always adhere to the rules during battle and this is why his fights are usually epic. You stated that at least a minute worth of penalties would be issued in today's standards, so, certainly it would be easy for you to point out where this incidents happened, but, you will never find anything worth of a penalty and which happened on that day in Dijon, no matter how hard you try: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ogTx_7a9A90.htmlsi=_zOrMo-owgSgmOwE

2019 British GP will always have my favourite battle of all time. Can't believe I missed the start of the race live and only got to tune in to the latter stages, in fairness there was the collision between Vettel and Verstappen but that was all that really happened tbh
@CyanRooper
@CyanRooper 5 месяцев назад
Leclerc and Verstappen were even fighting for position in the pitlane, that was how intense it was. The Leclerc Vs Verstappen battles of 2019 (Austria, Great Britain) were the best parts of the 2019 season. The first 2 races of the 2022 season were the best ones that year because of the Leclerc Vs Verstappen battles (along with the Alonso Vs Vettel battle at Suzuka). Ferrari is legitimately depriving us of some of the best battles in F1 by being, well, Ferrari.

This is always my favourite battle, but a close second for me is Lewis Hamilton vs the Monaco based RU-vidr in Sakhir. I was 9 years old when that battle came on, and I remember it watching it live, amazed at how intense the racing was. I had never seen anything like it before. Hamilton was pulling go karting manouvers and Mr. Equal Machinery was using all his skill just to get past him. The best thing was the battle lasted what felt like half the race.

I remember showing this in 2000 to my colleagues on a radio channel that I worked in Portugal. It was... July 1st and we were four or five. It was a "dead hour", and I was showing to one of them. After that, he called ALL THE PEOPLE on the building, including the DJ and director, that had just arrived to the place. And then he said: - Show me that again! And I showed. It was the BBC version, narrated by Murray Walker, and he was excited, while I was explaining what as happening. When it was ower, they were impressed on what happened, and I remember my conversation with the director, saying: - You like this, don't you? And I said yes. He responded: - Good job. And in the next morning, I was talking about that duel on the airwaves. And it was just someting that I went on the Internet and found it - and it wasn't porn (well, not THAT kind of porn). Few weeks later, I tapped on the shoulder of him and saying, in the most normal voice possible, that the Concorde had just crashed in Paris. You know who was the alarm bell...

If you want to know how much Arnoux and Villeneuve got along with each other, I have found an interview of Arnoux on RU-vid about Villeneuve. Here is the translation : "Before free practice, I asked him, "So Gilles, that curve right before the pitlane, around 200-210 kph, 4th gear, do you take it flat out or not ?" And then he looks at me and goes "Nope. But I'll try to !". Then comes free practice, we do an hour of driving. Then two minutes before the end of the session, I arrive at the curve that I asked him about earlier : the Ferrari is totaled against the barrier, without wheels on the left side. But at the same time, Gilles had already crossed the track and jumped above the barrier, so I told myself "He's alright". I finish my lap, park my car then go straight to Ferrari's garage and I ask him "How did it go ?" "You can't take it flat out", replies Gilles. That's who he was." For those who wants to see it --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VnOVurntfHM.htmlsi=om0F7Y5Lo70r1cMb
