Looking forward to an honest review of this, especially the hybrid part. It has been for sale for some time now but this has not gotten the attention it deserves. I believe belgium has the 155bhp hybrid version, holland does not. Like the colour but i'd still prefer magnetic grey over this.
Looks great, I didn't like silver fox in the flesh, so went with the red instead, but if this colour were an option I'd have specced it on my ST for sure.
I’ve got a silver fox, paint mismatch aside it’s the best colour on the ST. It makes the car look like a hot hatch. The rest of the colours just blend in imho
Bloody awful colour. I had the titanium and had it in chrome blue which I liked in the end, I originally wanted deep impact blue but when I went to order my lease car, ford dropped deep impact blue. I actually ended up liking chrome blue. Mine was the 100hp ecoboost. I like the sound of 155hp ecoboost.
This review features the 155bhp version in case anyone else was wondering about that (and doesn't want to spend 10 minutes looking for clarification like I had to).
155? I thought this was the 125? From what I understand, Fiesta's 1.0L EcoBoost Hybrid was never tuned to Focus' 1.0L EcoBoost Hybrid level; even the Focus only had 155 on the Powershift variant, the manual one had the 125.
Hi random question my my cousin has a hybrid Hyundai and when he lets off the revs the rev gauge then goes backwards and goes into almost like a secondary rev gauge it's something I don't like do these fiestas have this ( which shouts I'm green ) or do they just have a normal rpm guage like a petrol car , like on my cousins car the top of the rev gauge is like 0rpm then the left have drops into like hybrid mode I just don't like it , I wanted to get one of these fiestas but I don't want in anyway to know it's a hybrid really , I wanted to just get the normal petrol version , but all I've heard is they all have wet belts and are shit engines
I've driven the active X as a rental a while ago which made me buy the ST-Line X and i really like the better seats and stiffer setup of the st-line. And even though it's a 1.0 liter three cilinder turbocharged the engine is pretty good, ive driven it for 1000km amd average about 5 liters per 100km. And that's in Switzerland in the mountains. I can only imagine how much more efficient it will be on a more flat terrain
I'll stick to my Fiesta Active 1 ltr though you have shown me how to deselect it from Sport mode which having driven it a year plus I never could find, so thanks for that - now I'll go and save me some fuel.
I have to say I thought about Fiesta ST-Line with 125hp EB mHEV ever since i've driven the Puma with this engine and found it to be a fantastic engine. Better than standard 1.0 EB, due to electric engine's additional torque in lower part of the torque curve. I didn't observed mentioned problems in 'sport' mode in Puma (Titanium, not ST-L). Maybe the option of regen affected this behaviour? Personally I think it's a perfect engine for such a small car - you can work it hard on public roads, response of throttle is sport mode is great, there's decent ooomph, sound is also the best 1.0l engine I heard. And it's the first start/stop that I found usefull and let's say - invisible. Only con are vibrations below 1,6~1,7k rpm. I'd love to drive it. I think Fiest ST-Line with mHEV EB have to be a riot, really!
Maybe they don't shout about it being a hybrid too much because they know it's not _really_ that 'hybrid' ;) Great video as usual, looking forward to new content and hopefully your new car once you've managed to find something!
We also bought the Puma titanium x first edition with the 125hp mild hybrid engine. We had the same 125 hp ecoboost engine in our fiesta and our focus without mild hybrid and you can really feel that that little 48 volt battery gives it some extra punch.
Finally I have found a review that talks about the drop in power when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal! I keep saying it feels like the car is breaking by itself 😳 thanks for highlighting this 👍 I will keep the car in normal mode from now on. Loving this car!
Iv had one of these for a month now, can agree with the battery charge thing slowing you down it's annoying, sports mode however you can definitely feel the difference
he got everything wrong about the hybrid system. the ev motor is only rated at 15bhp and the batteries dont charge via braking, they are charged via the 5kw alternator strapped to the side of the engine. the braking he is feeling is the alternator kicking in.
It's sad really as even mg rover managed to add the same electric boost power to a mgtf hpd concept in 2001 come on Ford let's have a decent electric motor on the rear axle aswell, the battery tech increased discharge capability over the past 20 years allows it.
This is NOT a hybrid. It’s a mild hybrid (MHEV). These are 2 different things. Hybrid: Like the Prius and other Toyota hybrids can move the car on solely electric power at low speeds and use the ICE for more power. Mild Hybrid: Basically a stop-start system with a stronger starter motor with a 48V battery that allows you to start the engine faster, and charge the battery while braking (but not as much as a regular hybrid). I honestly find mild hybrids a cheap marketing trick meant to artificially increase manufacturers’ “electrified” sales numbers since most people don’t know the difference between hybrids and mild hybrids.
@@neilbowness6074 I’m only calling it that because it’s the industry accepted terminology and I had to use it to explain the difference. From the description I’ve given, you can see that it’s just a better stop-start system. And even if I agreed with the terminology, I still think it’s an important distinction for a car review, to say what kind of hybrid it is. The reviewer in this video seemed to be surprised that it wouldn’t operate in EV mode at all, which is impossible in a mild hybrid.
@@DaveDVideoMaker yeah, that’s right, a manual gearbox is only possible with mild hybrids because it’s always using the engine to move. With a hybrid, manufacturers won’t offer a manual because a driver may not know how to manage gear changes in the transition between electric and hybrid mode. Toyota hybrids for example, don’t even have a normal transmission with individual gears; they use a planetary gear set, which is simpler than a conventional transmission and more reliable (but they just call it a CVT since that’s how the resulting drive feels).
I just picked up my 125 BHP version today, three years old in Magnetic Grey. Enjoyed your review and look forward to getting to know this car. Traded in my old 20 year old Focus.
Got this car as a rental now for 2 weeks and I like it alot, drives very good (I am an inexperienced driver just got my license a year ago) now I only got one problem. Once coming up to a roundabout it shut itself off and wouldn't turn on again at all like seriously stuck, not even start stop button would work and disengaging the gear and re-engage didn't do anything so I just sat there for good 3 minutes with my hazard lights on blocking the traffic until - it somehow turned on again without any input and accelerating to 4000 rpm until I pressed the gas pedal myself and it worked normally ever since. Very weird, what I'm guessing is it was a rainy day and there was some shortage that did this. No clue why but until then I actually considered getting this as my first daily but now I kind of want to get an older car with less tech and more turning the key to turn it off and on because I don't need that stuckage... the more tech the more bugs.
The hybrid battery is 48v and is under the drivers seat. It powers a large alternator/starter that is belt driven to the engine. Stores regeneration voltage and supply power to engine during turbo lag.
That's why I love this system No turbo lag for me is a blessing. I can finally drive a turbo car like a N/A one. Yes, I've bought my ST-Line 2 days ago. And is surprisingly economic! Been driving it normally, avoiding to go over 4k rpm. But did City, highway... My other car is a MK6 fiesta, petrol, extremely reliable. Also had a puma 1.7 vct which I sold... And stored, an 1.4 Ghia Ford orion from 1987
I'm surprised, indeed a little shocked that the engine can be turned off at up to 16 MPH. This used to be termed 'coasting ' and was illegal, for obvious reasons. Has that law been amended ?
Dieses Fahrzeug wird als normaler verbrenner gewertet, wenn das gemeint war. Keine Vorteile außer Schnelligkeit und vielleicht Verbrauch, trotz hybrid.
I’ve got one as a courtesy car now, I don’t agree. The engine is pathetic, the gearbox isn’t great (feels loose and long throw) and the regen is far too strong.
I remember I had a black J reg Fiesta Rs Turbo, green stripe along the car! Around 20 odd yrs ago now but feels like yesterday, oh how the world has changed.
i officially retired today, remember back in the day owning a ford Mexico, green with black livery, on the motorway doing a ton with ease, i saw one just recently going for 65k,,, how these years have whizzed by, i ordered a diamond white 125 hybrid today:)
I agree with your final comment of the 'Regen' braking effect. We had it disconnected on our 6 month old fork-lift truck as smooth progress was almost impossible. A total absence of performance numbers spoilt the video for me. 'A bit more power' tells' nothing.
@@nan0nethe sr71 costs a tad more though... And the 0-60 is only marginally better, not worth the extra money... Gotta say, i love my fiesta1.0 hybrid(ish) car, its a little pocket rocket and well smooth and luxurious enough for me..
Really enjoyed your video about the Fiesta mild hybrid. After watching this video I went and ordered a fiesta ST line X edition. With the B&O sound system!! Hopefully get it in December, Can’t wait!!
"We are all going green!" Errrrm...no. I don`t need a spokesperson...if I did, it wouldn`t be you. Think if you read the papers, half the EU, half of OZ, NZ, UK, USA....DON`T WANT TO GO GREEN.
A great review here, but I'm just left wondering why the battery regen is so heavy in 'Sport' mode? 'Sport' mode' really is useless in this car with a ridiculous amount of engine braking in to corners, just makes the whole mode unusable, I would have thought 'Sport' mode would disable the regen function as it does the Start/Stop function, it is pointless and needs reprogramming in my opinion...
Constructive criticism here: the electric part of the powertrain is called a motor, not an engine (2:58) - engines are by definition internal combustion units. Also, those jeans look absolutely ridiculous, mate. Other than that, solid review👍 Subbed.
I am an owner of this car since last week and I can say that you are spot on, regarding sport mode it causes more slower coasting when you stop throttling but you get faster and sharper acceleration with higher torque when you hit the pedal, regarding turns, you just get in with the right speed before the turn and then accelerate!
Bought a three year old Mhev and love it but the gear box feels a bit clunky to me and not smooth, but I’m not sure if this is a characteristic of the car. Does anyone know .
They’re terrible for reliability. The old 1.25,1.4 and 1.6 engines on the older fiestas were pretty faultless and could take some abuse mines on 120 thousand miles and no problems
@@bobsurrey6686 I got rid of it shortly after and took a financial hit to do so. Gone to VW now (Golf) - seems solid and the engine is just so much nicer. Never having a 3 cylinder engine again.
With respect. This was a good but bad but good but bad but good but bad video. When reviewing a car you really should point out what you deem positive then what you deem negative. Instead you contradict every positive with a negative and vice versa making the video difficult to make sense of. Yes pro and cons are great for perspective buyers but when you dismiss everything positive with an immediate negative it is a good but bad review 👍
They are not advertising "we went green" because it doesn't really do anything. Barely affects the fuel consumption in a positive way and just adds a bunch of weight and cost. They just did it to pretend they also have tech.
Good review. I am not sure a real hybrid is much better. It becomes a lot heavier with lot of batteries. Also, the power still come from the engine. Even though it can drive with battery power, the energy still comes from the engine burning fuel. This system stores the energy from regen braking and then output the power when you accelerate saving engine power.
These small 3 cylinder engines souped up with turbo power are obvious going on to fail its a fact you can't have your cake an eat it. Get rid as soon as the warranty is up, better still don't buy one in the first place!..
“It’s kind of what we need to do”. I hate this kind of casually-spoken propaganda. Keep the indoctrinated state-approved climate ‘science’ opinion out of reviewing cars. State that it’s hybrid; don’t tell me it’s what ‘we’ need to do.
No I'll stick to my Fiesta Active which I've come to like on a day to day performance, city driving, local shopping and weekends out and about in the countryside.
Had a quick look at this old ad for the fiesta as hopefully I will be able to have motorbililty car, and as I have always loved the fiesta, had 2 I wanted to know a bit more about them as I haven't owned a car for a while. And watching this even though it was an old vid I have fallen in love all over again.and and can't wait to see if I get the alliance that gets me mobile again. Fingers crossed
You’re good at doing car videos and explaining stuff . In fact very good but your dress sense with those jumpers sucks lol . At least you put your foot down in this new hybrid thanks for the video
@@Otherdave008 had it for a couple of weeks now and done around 500 miles. Overall a lot quieter than the ST3, and is not quite as quick to get to 60. I'd say it feels very similar to my old 140bhp st line. I have to check my speed often as it really doesn't make much sound when you're going around 60/70. Getting 47 mpg which is nicer than the 35 I was getting in the ST3. Overall, not quite as fun of a car but economically good and still a quality motor.
1 litre engine powering all that. bog standar 1 litre 40/45000 kaput this 30/35000 maybe 2litre more like it but then you,ve deffy created a death trap.
I Love that color. I call it the 'Almost White' Blue. I also Like the 'Almost White' Silver. Pastel Colors are terrific ... I wish Tesla would do those colors ...
Thankyou very interesting I know nothing about hybrids Do they come in automatics Or is that a silly question ? My husband is 73. And needs a easy car to drive.
Start stop systems are stupid in a lot of cases. I seriously don't believe that a 30 sec stop at a red light will make me use so much more fuel. Instead the start stop system will ruin the battery faster.
You use the word pokey quite a few times, can you explain exactly what you mean please, it can’t be anything to do with the dictionary definition as you refer to the interior being a nice place to be and demonstrate the space in the drivers seat as being good.
Think there is about a £60 PM difference on PCP between the ST line X 155 (this car) and an ST-3..... food for thought..... 155 is more than adequate for most people tho :).... nice vid btw
@@MatteoPolpi i had a st line 140 got high 40s to 50 mpg swapped to a mk8 st about 2 months ago in summer got 30.9 mpg now its 29.8 keep in mind not alot of motorway driving and heavy right foot lol
All very well an nice however on a different note, I believe that these 'rechargeable' vehicles won't be all there made out to be, I believe the only way it will have to pan out is with Hydrogen powered vehicles it's a no brainer, battery powered vehicles just won't cut it when your looking at 35 million (cars) including charging ports, not to mention all the other vehicles on britons roads, also don't forget fast charging won't be possible unless you want to destroy the battery, that's a fact by the way, (always read the small print) also why in heck would anyone want to drive a standard transmission,? Why in the world am I supposed to 'change' the gears that's what the transmission is there for, especially in an around town average speed at about 11mph or thereabouts, ask a bus driver, a taxi driver, even a bloody great bin lorry all auto transmission?. As reviews go not bad at all mr. well done can I say!..
I’ve got the 140bhp at the moment, but getting the 155bhp version in January. Really excited to try it, also going for the st-line X which I didn’t have before.
I think these mild hybrids are just a stopgap to make emissions look slightly better before companies go proper electric, and for that it's fine and fits the market I suppose. Not a fan of that colour though, just white or light greys in general.
I wouldn't put it past ford, once the Mach E comes out and everything and they get few years worth of testing they can then develop and increase the tech and add it to the focus then feista ect...
Unbalanced 3 cylinder engine ? My 2018 is incredibly smooth. No balancer shafts, but there is a deliberately engineered imbalance in the flywheel to balance the engine.
Ok, mild hybrid and manual and I am leaving half way through the video. This is going to proof in the future that it’s useless, get pure petrol or full hybrid like Toyota , or perhaps full ev. 👍🚗 review was ok though
Great vid but I think you misused the sport mode.. it is supposed to be akin to one pedal driving (if you've ever driven a forklift truck, it's just like that).
It doesn’t slow down fast enough to be driven like that. The biggest issue is the time between lifting your foot from the throttle and the regen system kicking in. If it kicked in instantly, it would be easy to judge the slowdown. It’s the uncontrolled change in pace that makes it hard to judge.
I really can't be bothered to check, but if (as I suspect) this is more expensive than the normal ecoboost version, what's the point? Really, what's the point? It's more complex, it'll be more expensive to insure, it'll weigh more, have greater tyre wear and the electricity you're generating to feed those batteries comes from burning petrol. Is there a more expensive way of generating electricity? Is there?
This is the replacement for the outgoing petrol ecoboosts, so you won’t be able to buy a ‘normal’ one going forwards. It’s 30KG extra (which you won’t notice) and the batteries are charged from braking/slowing down - that’s energy that is completely wasted in a traditional car. Although it’s not a fully fledged hybrid, I think it’s great you get an extra 15hp for free. 👍🏼
15 bhp for free? Really? So it costs no more than the outgoing car? In which case I'm impressed. And 30kg is more than half a wife. Colin Chapman would hate it.
I have a Vignale Edtion and it’s absolutely brilliant it’s nice to drive mega reliable and the best thing about it is that it is chain driven and it doesn’t have the dreaded wet belt
You can’t really call it a hybrid then ?? It’s just a new version of stop start to call it hybrid it must be able to run at least 50 miles on battery power so it can be used in towns and cities so my opinion is why bother just buy a eco boost but without the tree hugging rope around your neck and extra service costs that go with it !!
By definition, mild-hybrid vehicles use an extra electric motor to support the regular combustion engine. They do not have to be able to drive fully electric (like full-hybrid vehicles, e.g. many Toyota cars, do). In this case, if I get this right, the electric motor is driving the crankshaft of the combustion engine during the low rev area. It provides additional torque, therefore you need less fuel to accelerate from standstill. Basically this electric motor works as a compensation for the lack of turbocharger while accelerating in the low revs regime. At higher revs, the turbocharger does its job just like in a regular combustion engine. The electric 'motor' then works as a generator to load the 48V battery.
@@bernddasbrot2453 I don’t disagree however what’s the point having one it just means more electrical rubbish bolted to the engine and loads more maintenance costs to the owners nothing really green about it !! So no point buying one if it isn’t able to run on electrical power for at least 50 miles !! Or just go and buy a full EV or wait until Tesla release the new model 2 hatchback for £18,000 that’s going to wipe the floor with all other car manufacturers !!! Because what I’ve seen of it I’m ordering one for the wife perfect 👌
