Greed, period. Not just corporate greed. Treating housing as an appreciating asset is what causes house prices to outgrow wages. It doesn’t matter how high you increase the minimum wage or health benefits. So as long as real estate is a privatized for-profit sector, so as long as we find it acceptable that house price appreciation should be the foundation of household wealth, there will be homelessness.

@mariusfacktor3597

That's absolutely a good point. Interestingly though, the local governments are often the root of the problem. Many neighborhoods in Los Angeles haven't allowed the housing stock to increase since about 1970. Some neighborhoods even have less housing today than they did 50 years ago. And this is due to needlessly restrictive zoning laws that have made building homes illegal on almost every parcel of land in the city.

In the late 1990s, Los Angeles landlords started getting greedy......and it's never ended since then. The average apartment went from $525 to $825 in just two years, now it's over $2,500, with ages not going up to match that increase. The problem isn't the homeless people, the problem is cities that allow greedy pig landlords to keep raising the rent so the landlords can buy themselves bigger and more beautiful homes and cars.
@mariusfacktor3597
@mariusfacktor3597 8 месяцев назад
The best way to get back at landlords is to build an abundance of housing. Flood the market with housing until an apartment becomes a dime a dozen. Then landlords will need to compete for tenants. Right now it's sadly the other way around.

We keep ignoring a lot of elephants in the room: drug abuse, bad decisions, just don't care attitude, mental illness. You can't just throw yourself away like that then expect tax payer money to be a safety net. Its ironic too when you see people risking their lives by walking through the Darien Gap to get here then hit the ground running doing odd jobs working under the table. Some of us Americans are too privilege and waste the opportunities we have been blessed with that others can only wish for. We probably need to have some kinda exchange program. When you start messing up, we have a swap program, a migrant at the border ready and willing to work and you take their place.

Here are the real facts. It's not a homeless problem, it's a drug problem. Most of these ppl are addicts trying to do their substance of choice at taxpayers expense. And they are from other states, so that no one they know can bear witness to their behavior. All the money that goes to homeless service agency needs to be forensic audit b/c we hear from homeless ppl, in L.A all the time, how that money doesn't get to them or most facilities. Those encampments under the freeways are under the jurisdiction of DOT, that's whay I was told when I called the police department.

@mariusfacktor3597 8 месяцев назад
Lot of misinformation in there. 72% of homeless people in LA County have lived in LA County for more than 20 years. Less than half are drug addicts. Many are elderly, disabled, or mentally unstable. America has a drug problem and unhealthy drug habits often make people poor. Rural Wisconsin just as much as Los Angeles. The difference is that poor people in Wisconsin have access to housing, but in Los Angeles they don't. There simply isn't enough housing in Los Angeles for everybody that's here. Even if everyone was clean, there would still be homelessness.

I pulled up the reports and are some stats: 72% of homeless adults have lived in LA County for MORE than 20 years. 23% of homeless are substance abusers, 30% have mental illness, 17% have physical disability, 7% have a traumatic brain injury, 3% have a developmental disability. (These are not mutually exclusive). 21% first became homeless due to a loss of income. 19% entered homelessness after release from prison. 89% self reported that high housing costs prevented them from finding housing. 86% self reported that a monthly stipend of $300-$500 would help them re-enter housing.

I don't know how to solve everybody's drug problem. I'm not sure you even can. But solving homelessness is not that complicated. You build enough homes and then everybody can live in one.

🏠 @3:20 ~ When homeless people live in houses that are way bigger and nicer than many people, that’s a problem. So unless there are a lot of people living in that place, that’s a problem to me. I think making tiny homes or tiny apartments is perfect. I feel like a lot of this is about embezzlement or people that are emotional and not logical. First, embezzlement. When you’re building everybody a big house I wonder if you save it off a little bit of money from every square foot to pay the leader of the “nonprofit“. And it would be more difficult to siphon off money if you were just making cheap and tiny places that they could call their own. Second, maybe it’s just these people are emotional. They feel it’s not right to treat somebody who is homeless any different than anybody else, so they want to give them houses in apartments that are equal to an average person. The problem is the longer you take to build nicer places means everybody else has to wait longer. If you just build cheap and simple housing you could make three in the time that you can make one nice big place. There’s nothing wrong with studio apartments. My mom was a traveling nurse that made very good money and she lived in a studio apartment for many years. But now studio apartments not good enough for homeless people?
