Giving Nature A Voice - Season 1, Episode 4: The Fight For Water - Kenya's Cattle Wars | Nature Documentary
Watch 'The Fight For Water - Kenya's Cattle Wars - Part 2' here: • The Fight For Water - ...
Kenya’s most famous TV investigative reporter produced a film on the cattle wars in northern Kenya. In the lawless wilderness of northern Kenya, where pastoralists graze their cows, well-armed herders are forced to compete for diminishing grasslands in this era of climate change. Cattle rustling between Samburu, Boran, Pokot & Turkana warriors is on the rise. Hundreds have died in senseless cattle wars that top Kenya’s losses from terrorism.
In the second part, John-Allan Namu documents how a severe drought has impacted Kenya’s northern rangelands. Competing tribesmen have attacked livestock and burned down fences and buildings of ranches and conservancies in Laikipia. Are Kenya’s cattle wars a harbinger of what is to come, as rivers dry up and grasslands turn into wastelands?

Kenya's most famous TV investigative reporter produced a film on the cattle wars in northern Kenya. In the lawless wilderness of northern Kenya, where pastoralists graze their cows, well-armed herders are forced to compete for diminishing grasslands in this era of climate change. Cattle rustling between Samuru, Boran, Pokot, and Turkana warriors is on the rise. Hundreds have died in senseless attle wars that top Kenya's losses through terrorism. Three People are burned to death over the clash for pastures, another 10 killed for herding their cattle and again over pastures...the list goes on and on and on..government sources claim that there are over 50,000 heads of cattle in that area alone. In the second part, John Allan Namu documents how a severe drought has impacted Kenya's northern rangelands. Competing tribesmen have attacked livestock and burned down fences and buildings of the ranches and conservancies in Laikipia. How To Live In Harmony With Nature And Reduce Pollution 1. Many Production Companies Which We Do Not Need Actually For Human Beings Has To Be Stopped We manufacture so many products and it is creating pollution. So if we minimise our products, pollution would be less. We produce so many things which we do not need, like cold drinks, leather products, potato wafers, chips, fruit juices, chocolates, biscuits, pickles, ice creams, etc. Cold drinks, fruit juices, pickles, ice creams, etc. Should be cooked at home only. If we stopped producing this things which are not required for humans, so much pollution could be reduced. If we colour the clothes pollution occurs. So if we don't colour our clothes, the pollution resulting from colouring the clothes can be stopped. Let everything remain in white natural colour. 2. We Should Cook Foods In Its Natural Form We can cook rice and wheat in our homes and eat it. Rice and Wheat is produced in farms. Then it is packed and transported to big warehouses, then wholesalers buy from them and supply to retail shops. But if a manufacturing company makes bread from rice and wheat, then to make bread a manufacturing company has to be set up, machines and working staffs are needed. When a company is built many other things are also needed. Then at last a plastic pack is required to pack the breads. So if we start cooking eatable things in its natural form then we do not need many companies like bread manufacturing company, tomato ketchup, noodles, fruit jam, pizza, burger, etc., the things required for the company and the plastic pack, paper box pack and glass bottles. If done like this, so many companies will not be required and hence less pollution for the world. Also we could save our money like this. If you buy a packet of bread, it would cost you more money than if you cook wheat and rice in home. Previously before industrial revolution, we didn't have technology, but our foods were rich with nutrients. Now we have technology, but technology is polluting our foods and our foods are not rich with nutrients, and because of that also we have health problems. If this is done, then many jobs would be lost. For that many peoples should do farming and they should be given loans if they do not have enough money to start farming on their own. Food, Medicines, Surgeries and Education's should be made free to the world till the world settles down with farming. After that food, medicines, surgeries and education's should be stopped free to the world. Many people should study botany subject so that they have knowledge of plants and they should do farming. Is their any another solution, that humans won't lose jobs and also pollution would decrease. Humans have to take this step certainly instead of going on polluting the earth, making wildlife extinct and also mass extinctions of humans in future. 3. Electricity Pollution We create electricity from many types of sources like coal, water, etc., but it creates pollution. If electricity created from windmill and solar energy then no pollution occurs in the creation process. But still to manufacture windmill and solar machines pollution would occur. As I previously said that if we shut down many manufacturing companies which are producing things which are not needed for humans, then the world would not require so much electricity. If less electricity required, then less pollution generated. 4. Could We Stop Drinking Cow's and Buffalo's Milk Whatever vitamins and nutrients we get from milk, if we can get it from other eatable things, then we can stop drinking cow's and buffalo's milk. As milk has to be packed in glass bottles and plastic packs and then transported to places. All of this can be stopped. For infants whose mother's have died or mother's who cannot breast feed their infants, only for them cow's and buffalo's milk should be given. We use milk in tea and coffee. Instead of milk we must use lime with tea and coffee or just plain tea and coffee. A lime should be cut into a few pieces and cooked with tea and coffee or something else can be used instead of lime. 5. How Much Should Be The World's Population Every place should have a single house. No buildings, everything ground floor. If we do this and the whole lands of our planet earth would be occupied one day with homes, farms, forests, schools, hospitals, etc., then we would come to know how much our planet earth can have maximum population. Once the population is determined, then we have to maintain that population. For example if our earth can have a population of 10 billion peoples, then when the population reaches 10 billion, then everyone should have only one child till the population reaches 9 billion peoples. As if we have only one child then the population decreases. When population is 9 billion peoples, then everyone should have 2 children's till the population reaches 10 billion peoples. After that again we should have only one child. In this way population can be maintained.

@jenniferkoo2206
@jenniferkoo2206 11 месяцев назад
Drought and climate change are problems that could easily be managed if there was not overgrazing but sustainable use. The problem is that they overgraze one area until there is nothing left. Then they move on and do the same to the next area. This is bad practice. They should be lightly grazing one area then move on quickly. This is the natural pattern you see in populations of wild animals. They don't linger in one place until it is completely exhausted. if you keep moving, everything recovers much faster.

Great documentary. To be sure, the topic of the conflict between the local people, because of the lack and the management of the water resources is treated with sensitivity and respect. Kudos to this young reporter, he did a great job in interviewing the different actors in this conflict. I hope, we can learn something from all these harsh, yet so difficult, realities. Thanks so much for this video and best wishes from Philadelphia, USA.

This where I grew up, When I was about 7 years old there were nights when we couldn't even sleep in beds because of gunshots from the cattle rustlers. At times the clashes would be so bad that the schools had to be closed until the conflict ceased, I guess over the years the conflict has now moved much further and those in Isiolo town no longer face 1997 - 2000 like conflicts. Conflict is common in these areas from June all the way to October when it starts to rain. I hope that one day these communities shall learn to co-exist together.

We have a similar situation in Zimbabwe where rivers are drying faster than usual. Many villagers have resorted to drifting their cattle to an area where they can access water up to until November. However, there are people who have even camped and built their permanent homes in those areas yet hundreds of cattle herders move their livestocks at that exact place. Even though there is no direct confrontation leading to deadly fights, tension are growing due to theft while others resort to pushing cattle further upstream from the closest villages which are atleast 20km or more away, making it even more difficult to raise livestock for them. The problem of people living permanently has decreased pastures and increased siltation down the river affecting the communities who rely on the river waterholes to keep their cattle around during the dry season. I believe government efforts are needed to impede dwellers in defined bush areas to help keep natural vegetation and river flows.

Maybe someone can help me to understand. Why doesn't Kenya have wells dug ? Earth has a unlimited water supply under ground. No matter where you are at, you run pipe deep enough you will tap into it. When drought time comes you've got your own water supply.
@topamazingclips
@topamazingclips 3 года назад
Wells are being dug but they ain't enough
@johnjordan8022
@johnjordan8022 3 года назад
@@topamazingclips :. If the wells are not enough that's because something isn't being done right. I can tell you now, if they are not driving at least 50 ft of pipe into the ground. They are wasting time, money and labor. 1 well can generate massive amounts of water for a good 10 years or so. After which, you may need to drive your pipe down another 10 ft. or until you reach water. It goes without saying, you build your structure to accommodate your need. If the need is to keep 50 plus head of cattle with water all the time. The solution is very simple. If electricity is an issue, install a manual pump to the end of the pipe that is the well. The pipe is usually stopped at waist or chest level. This makes hand pumping much easier. Then build a water trough for the cattle to drink out of. Something that's low enough for them to drink out of. But, high enough so they can't jump in. Then build a trap that goes from the water pump to the inside of the cattle's water trough. This prevent having to carry water. Then build a shelter over the cattle's water trough. This tells the cattle where to come to for water and it reduce evaporation from the sun. I'm sure they can make things work in a much better way !

Everyone is missing the key problem here. Based on the Kenyan statistics in 15:00, it says that the drier the land, the more babies they make. As a consequence, the area will have more hungry adults trying to find food and water by entering the land inhabited by other tribes. This inevitably leads to war with other tribes.. To resolve the social unrest, I advise the Kenyan government to begin working with its population issue.
@afrikareport3525
@afrikareport3525 2 года назад
Population is not the problem and I suggest that your argument is simplistic. These communities have had these problems since 1963 when the population was low. The major problems here are poverty, ignorance and climate change. The government should actively promote education in these areas so that the succeeding generations abandon or reduce reliance on pastoralism. Nothing else, not even population control can solve this problem.

I lived in Isiolo in 1970 developing a cattle holding ground., and was involved in the purchase of 36,000 head of cattle and trekking them over 400 miles to the LMD holding ground. Isiolo at that time was maybe 1000 and a block or two long. Today it is over 100,000 and has an international airport. 51 years ago there were similar issues of conflict, but on a micro scale compared with today. The challenge is considerable. Bahati mzuri.
