Brian's channel got me to start playing SFV. I made Gold in about 6 months and now I've rage quit and deleted the game!

Games add so many rules that most of don't know about. No one has to explain a touchdown catch by breaking down exactly why the human wrist doesn't rotate like that. For better or worse, I feel like there is a bigger delta between watching FGC games with/without direct experience than, for example, watching basketball with/without direct experience.

Exactly Merro, I was about to comment a very similar sentiment but you captured it perfectly. I would watch breakdowns like this all day because a lot of this context would be lost on me too.

Exactly! Getting it wrong when you still have significant life bar left is obviously bad but does not mean game over. When he made those decisions and got the execution right... His options were either get it right and clutch the win, or fail and lose. Any hit would have meant defeat. The stakes couldn't have been higher. And he did it! It was really hype.

So I hate this game, as it's a symptom of a bigger issue. It was made slower and easier, and Crapcom admitted that early on. To make it "more accessible" to a wider audience. This dumbing down and simplification makes things weaker and far less interesting.

This is the kind of attitude I think you only grow, when you have a certain level of familiarity in the game. It's what I call the "Gold Rank Fever," a mental state where you only know enough to think you understand. To an outsider or beginner on bronze rank, you're not even in the right headspace to dismiss something like this, because you understand that the game is actually hard and competition can make even the simplest task an undertaking. When you're still figuring things out in silver, you understand exactly how difficult these situations are, because you're still struggling and regularly failing in these moments. When you get to Gold/Platinum, you're getting deep into the grind. You're getting high on those explosive improvement-spikes, you're beginning to read frame data, listen to strategy breakdowns and lab in training mode with more intent and you're beginning to feel a sense of accomplishment for climbing ranks and taking wins. To some, this feeling gets in their head. They think that because they know the numbers and know the matchup and maybe have labbed similar situations in a vaccuum, they now have a full understanding of the situation. They've seen the Mariana Trench from the surface, but claim it's "Not that deep," because they've walked 7 miles before and know how long that is. This isn't a dig against all Gold/Platinum players, nor am I saying people in Bronze or even Warlord couldn't have these attitudes. More that it's in that intermediate, middle of the road spot, where you begin to have these kinds of thought-processes for the first time.

This "final exam" is what dictates whether you end up passing or failing in the class due to your grade being lower than you would have hoped. In the midst of the celebration of your success, someone walks up and says "you struggled with that question? i could solve that easily lol"

I feel the same way. Even though I don't play much SFV, the matches are always very satisfying to watch. And GGStrive is my favorite fighting game out atm. Though KOF XV is looking to replace that spot soon.

Now maybe if I said warlord then I'd be full of shit... but I just watch better players than me and try to figure out why they do what they do... or watch videos where better players than me *tell* me why they do what they do. Look, i never have been in a situation like this, but two 50/50 mix blocked at the heat of the moment, and an optimal but hard punish in that scenario is really hard

Also it's hard bcse: if Dhalsim get to the ground, is like 3 to 5 frames of end lag, the crouching fierce is like 7 to 13 frames So you need to time correctly before he got to the ground

I still keep my opinions on both moments lmao, this is like justifying basic moments. I get the frame specific punish menlard but maybe I just been desensitized from previous sf hype moments that required 1 frame link to feel a 2 frame be all that hype. If anything people should be "proud" of the lard ass but not make it a hype moment, justin wong winning another marvel tourney and doing a barrel roll for his win pose is more deserving.
