The early hours of Saturday 30 September 1967 and the final BBC Light Programme closedown, recorded from VHF. From 5.30am that same morning it would become BBC Radio 2. At 2.00am, announcer Roger Moffat reads the news summary and weather forecast. Then at 2.03am he closes down the Light Programme for the final time.
And so it's Roger Moffat who earns a place in broadcasting history as the last voice to be heard on the BBC Light Programme.

Even though I really liked 'Wonderful Radio 1' as a kid, I was still sorry that the Light Programme was no more. 'Radio 2' just didn't cut it as a name. It still doesn't!

The BBC Light Programme always had very good broadcasting hours compared to other national broadcasters of that time. Originally from 1945 when they launched, until 1957 they were on the air from 9.00am until Midnight. 1957 saw early morning broadcasting from 7.00am, later starting at 6.30am from 1958 and from 1964-1967 it was on the air from 5.30am until 2.02am for six days a week and from 6.55am until 2.02am on Sundays. BBC Radio 2 simply retained the same broadcasting hours.

Roger Moffat worked on Radio Hallam from 1974 till 1981. Then on BBC Radio Sheffield from 1982 till 1985. But was fired from BBC Radio 2 in 1972 for what reason does anyone know would like to know please

he finished the weather summary with the words 'and I can confirm it's pissing down out there'

He was, as in the above clip, suffering at the time from a degree of bottled ( or possibly draught) disorientation.

Richard, he was fired from the BBC for joking about a storm force of unimaginable strength and adding a half - a force 28 and a half. You can hear Roger explaining what happened here at around 40 minutes into the recording: soundcloud.com/joe9t/Roger-Moffat-this-was-your

Haha the days of the essential highbrow stuck up "anti-youth" BBC radio broadcasting only were finally coming to an end, no wonder he felt sad. No wonder Radio Caroline achieved such great success before Radio 1 started. Should have provided the 50's and 60s youth with their own station way before '67.

It’s amazing with the massive cultural divide back then.
