I saw Kurt and Courtney at Disneyland outside of Pirates when I was a sophomore in high school so 1992? - it was nighttime and they were buying popcorn. He had bright pink hair and was maybe my height (I’m 5’4”). I remember my friends and I got his autograph and no one really knew Courtney at the time because she stood off to the side while we all had Kurt sign our Disneyland guide maps.
@damselcausingdistress81no sounds about right. Kurt was about 5’7 and he hunched a lot when walking. Around this time he had the reddish/pink hair and they were living in LA. Courtney wasn’t that well known then, she was a little bit bc she was into the scene but it wasn’t till whenHole released 1994 Live Through This on the week of Kurt’s death when she got the notoriety she rly craved.
Im actually very surprised that she stood aside to let him sign autographs. From what ive read im even surprised to hear that he was out in public in 1992, seeing that he took an instant dislike to been recognised overnight due to the phenomenal success of Nevermind. Doesnt sound like their usual characters at all, but then everyone has their good/bad days.
Nirvana, my most favorite band of all time. I wish I was born a few years earlier to see them at their peak. All we have today are Nirvana cover bands. Kurt’s legacy will never die and it’s such a shame he passed the way that he did.
It was a great time but the first year after his death was very grimm… wasn’t nice. It got better after ‘95 again. Go watch bands like Mudhoney, they STILL tour. 🤟🏼
@kildigdotcom4599Well that’s your opinion, but countless millions around the world just might disagree. The music of Nirvana sounds just as powerful and intense today as it did the day it was written and given that the big radio stations now only ever play bubblegum pop, I can’t see any reason for Kurt’s musical legacy to fade.
@@DWINC 1994 was ROUGH for Courtney Love, not only did Kurt take his own life leaving her and Frances behind, but Kristen Plaff OD' on Tar and Hole was JUST getting Started. The Tour must have been incredibly TOUGH for her to do.
@@jamestheadvisor1650 King County Coroner and Seattle Police Department Ruled Unanimously that Cobain died by Suicide. Case is Closed for a Reason. The Fingerprints found on the 20 Gauge matched Kurt, It was Also Registered to Him, Credit Card Records showed Cobain's Signature on Receipts and the Handwriting ALSO matched him. His Pager was also found where Love had multiple times attempted to reach him from Rehab with an L.A. Area Code of 213. Why don't you and Tom Grant March down to the King County,WA Coroner Office and DEMAND that they listen to your Conspiratorial nonsense?
So interesting. Thanks so much for documenting this. I was a grungie, and Kurt's death shook us all to the core. The voice of my generation, suddenly gone. I'll definitely add the memorial to my plans when I get to Seattle. Thanks for all you do.
I Lived there for 3 Years. The Nirvana fans up there are TRUE Nirvana fans. They're humble and will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about Kurt Cobain's Bio and his Life Story and NONE of them believe that "Soaked in Bleach" Garbage. They all universally agree that Cobain killed himself and was a Paranoid, Confused, Suicidal Junkie.
I luv " Where did you sleep last night " song . I would listen hundreds times. I'm so sad , it makes me cry thinking bout him & his life... I can't live in Seattle, it's so depressing weather ... You will be missed & luv forever Kurt 💔
My family has had a sporting goods shop since 1993. I was twelve when Kurt passed. I signed the wall in the skate sharpening room the say he passed. It's still there. Nirvana changed my life.
I was in my 40's in the 90's and I like metal , but I did respect the new music made by Nirvana. I was shocked when I heard of his death . I was later surprised that Dave Grol was their drummer . I will never forget when the other guitar threw up his guitar and it hit his head knocking him out and no one noticed ! Gail D.
The irony is endless to me, how so many people travel to Aberdeen and they exploit him to make money, while Kurt absolutely hated it and wanted nothing more than to leave. He was my inspiration to pick up a guitar as a kid, literally learned just by ear and watching his hands. Also a role model after my parents divorced. I wonder if Kurt ever truly felt at home again after his parents split. I don't think I could handle actually being in these places, it might be too overwhelming. That being said, I believe the first house you showed is where we get the footage of Kurt on the balcony from a movie I won't mention, it never added up with the Lake Washington house. I also don't think he was at the Cactus, although the dessert first thing is common for heroin addicts. He was known to have been at the park with Francis according to a neighbor and seemed very happy. The last credible sighting was in fact at Linda's Tavern by Charles Peterson who Kurt gave his new number to...and I appreciate your terminology of Kurt's passing. None of us were there, and I'm no gatekeeper but dead men can't pull triggers. Thanks for this
Been a Kurt fanatic since I was 7 when he died. Changed my life, honestly don't know if I could say it had a good impact on me, he did but his death, honestly destroyed my insides. My mother left me about a year before he died. When she left Kurt/nirvana is what I had. Then shortly he was gone too and even as a kid, it killed me. I'm 38, I'm still dead inside and I'm sorry to my kids and my wife. I'll never forgive myself
@cbl4012 I am so sorry for you. You are psychologically injured from complicated grief. You suffered two major losses in a short period of time and have never healed from it. I would say to try to find help for your unresolved grief. I can't say it will work, as it didn't with mine. But you have a wife and a child. After my last death, my 26 yr son's S, I broke. But by then I'd already had my dad (i was 13), mom, brother and furbaby die (all w/i 6 mths time), so...... I was left completely alone. The pain is too huge and I can't get past it all. I understand feeling dead inside, Sometimes our hearts close down when someone we love is lost forever. It is our protection, our way of saying, "My heart will NOT be broken like this again, as I will never allow my heart to explode with love like this for anyone ever again. This way I can't be hurt again, as it feels unsurvivable. Maybe if you allow your wife and kids to love you and warm up your heart, it will thaw. Good luck. If you don't see this, I hope someone else will benefit. 💓
Ah 8 days too late, yer in my neck of the woods. One of the music stores Kurt visited was down here in the Olympia area. The original location doesn't exist anymore and now is a McDonalds, Music 6000 (6000 Pacific Ave SE) has since relocated twice but still sports a signed by Kurt and framed receipt on the wall at it's current location. I remember at the original location, going into the front doors and down to the right a flight of stairs to the basement of the music store (originally was a church building) and tinkered with the keyboard synthesizers and audio gear. Heck, I could have passed Kurt in the store and never knew it.
Being from Washington state in America is like being from Wales if you're British. 80% of the time its grey, raining, windy, cold, or any combination of autumn winter vibes. Personally i love driving in the rain and love being able to drive around really hilly places and enjoy not having to trek in the cold and wet (I learned to appreciate the little things in life much more in recent times and I'm really glad I did). Thanks for making this video so I could kind of feel like I've been there with you lol. Happy travels to all 🙏🏼 God bless you mate. Subscribed 👍🏼
i have been reading some articles that Kurt really did not know how to take all the fame and fortune, and had to become introverted to it all to get away, he ended up at places like a motel room, sitting in the closet, feeling a lot safer away from the pressures, and we all continued to listen to his music, finding out about the Rome overdose, losing track of him for a few weeks, then later on the Mtv report of his suicide...WOW it really shocked me, what had happened, then reports of him being killed off by Courtney, taking pills and writing his famous note, blowing his head off, a gruesome detail..it's no wonder we all were saddened by his sudden passing as we were, it happened so fast, we had to stop and take it all in, one moment your here the next your gone..............R.I.P....TAKE YOUR TIME HURRY UP, DON'T BE LATE AS I WANT YOU TO BE AS A FRIEND.
Could you imagine one day you can go anywhere you like and not worry. And next day being mobbed by people. He wanted his band to be known. But nobody knew they were going to blow up.
Addiction has a tendency to do that to people, even those who are not famous. Most alcoholics stay In a room for days drinking themselves to death while totally depressed, it's a mental illness.
@@martymartin2894 my best friends daughter just overdosed and passed away this week. She was a the kindest and prettiest girl. She was 24. We got some rough days ahead of us
I have been waiting for you to do this video, Adam. I have been to the bench and house, but never to the other locations. My heart aches for Frances Bean . Thank you for this touching video and showing how many people have been touched by his music and short life.🙌🙏💙
Nirvana was definitely the band that got me into playing music. I then moved from that into Slayer/Pantera/Metallica/Megadeth, but I always liked Nirvana right up there with them. The "In Utereo" chick on the album cover is on my tatt list.
I was at the hotel room about a year ago. I thought the owner was a real nice guy, he just handed me the guy at let me explore as long as I wanted. He told me when he bought the place there were signed paper records from the guests in the office, but he searched and didn't find anything from Kurt (said if there was anything, the previous owner probably took it). He also said there were some other motels on the same road where Kurt stayed but they have been demolished.
Nirvana's influence ushered in bands that were alt pop posing as rock. the songwriting suffered. It was sawing away on guitars loudly while playing basically a pop song. The 90's went off a cliff by the time Bush and No doubt were selling millions of albums.
I was 11 years old when Kurt died. I remember watching MTV News all day long on that day in April when the news broke. I don't know why... It was mostly the same things repeated over, and over again. Every now and again there would be something new, but it was trivial. The man was dead and wasn't coming back. I remember seeing Courtney Love show up at the vigil at the nearby park that day and it looked very much like the day that you shot this video. I'm from the Detroit, but I've always imagined that Seattle pretty much always looks like that. I've been a fan of Nirvana for many years now, and I've followed the careers of the surviving members very closely, but Nirvana has remained as my favorite band of all time. I recently turned 40 and constantly wonder what the state of things would be if Nirvana persisted, or really if Kurt hadn't done what he did. Even if Nirvana didn't go on, I imagine he would have moved on to some other project and would have continued to create and inspire others. Thanks for this video! It was very insightful; especially seeing room 226. It must have been very cool to have such intimate contact with a place that he likely regarded as a secret hiding spot. I've always heard that Kurt and Duff from G n R were on the same flight from LA to Seattle and that was the last anyone heard. Cool to see some of the other last spots he was at before the end. Makes me want to go out west and check them out for myself.
I remember that day vividly, I heard the news, and immediately went to my room to watch MTV. In 1999, me and a coworker drove from Portland to Seattle for a Mariners game at the brand new Safeco Field. We stayed at that motel! It was nice enough. I had no idea of that history!
OMG! OMG! OMG! I'm totally geeking out! I LIVE just a few blocks from that first location at 13th and Lakeside NE and I never knew Curt Cobain lived in that house!! My dog and I walk by there all the time, and not only was Kurt there, but so was Adam Woo??!!! Sorry, this is really pretty incredible. Thanks for teaching this longtime Seattleite something new.
I was just there and did a video a few days ago as well. If you're a big Nirvana fan also visit his home town of Aberdeen, Washington. You mentioned it at the beginning, but it does have some cool places.
Such a tragedy. The world's loss. Thanks for the informative tour of these spots Adam. The rainy, dark atmosphere of Seattle lent itself to some of the music that came from that time.
44:30 in your phone pic you can see Kurt's Volvo in the garage. He was a very nervous driver and bought it based on their crash safety reputation. Barely used, I believe the tires were flat from sitting so long.
Remember going there numerous times posting up there selling dope and hearing about Cobain staying there. Wasn't sure though it was kinda trip. Went to the same high school as Layne Staley in Lynnwood WA. Remember seeing him cut through our elementary all the time with his drum sticks and leather jacket and always a different fat chick following him
I'm not surprised they let you in the hotel room, it's great advertising for them for free. I don't think enough places realize the reach you have and how it could help them
Oh man …Nirvana is one of my favorite bands of all time. I was too too young to see them live back when Kurt was still alive (I was only 10). But my dad was a big fan and introduced me to them when I was kid. I really got into their whole catalog though in my teens and 20s. I try to see my favorite bands now whenever I get a chance because you never know what the future holds. Thanks for the tour!
I liked a few of Nirvana's songs but I wasn't a huge fan. When Kurt died, I'd just discovered Pantera and was constantly listening to their newest album, Far Beyond Driven. That day, I was talking to my buddy on the phone, who lived a few towns away and I told him Kurt had died. He was a bigger Nirvana fan and he hadn't heard yet. I could tell he was a little taken aback. The day the live album (Muddy Banks) came out, I went to buy it and there was this lady there, standing next to me. She had to be about 60 or 65. She said to me, "Oh, you're buying it too." I nodded as I grabbed a cassette copy. Then she took one, and I thought it was funny and kind of cool that older people were buying this stuff. Of course she could have been buying it as a gift.
Jimmy Hendrix is also buried near Seattle in Renton, and Bruce and Brandon Lee are also buried in Seattle. I didnt get a chance to see the house, but i did go to Cactus
Both those original benches in Viretta Park were sold at auction in 2014. Also the house where he died was quietly sold in 2021 for $7.1 million to CSK Washington Investments LLC. (Kurt and Courtney had purchased it 3 months before he died in 1994 for $1.4 million.)
Twenty plus years ago a few friends were on a road trip from Eastern Washington and we stayed a motel called the Villa Del Mar one block from the Marco Polo not knowing the history. Finding a place to stay that weekend was quite difficult because of Seafair that year. Needless to say that place was a dump and it was very gross. Fast forward to 2016 my wife and kiddo visited the house in the Denny Blaine area and the park you mention is actually a nudist beach as we found out while parking our car there. I took a few photos of the bench and it looks completely different now!
Adam when I was in highschool in 1990s 1991-1995 some call me Kurt Cobain or Beavis lol cause I have natural blonde hair. Thanks for taking us along to these great places. Stay safe.😎📸👍😔🤘
Dude, This is exactly what we've been preaching for decades now. It was Kirt Cobain and Nirvana that 'opened up' the doors for punk music. We're glad someone finally shed some light. Sincerely, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, The Dead Boys, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Damned, The Stooges, Misfits, The Germs, The Cramps, The Vandals and about 2,837 other bands.
I'm 44 years old so I remember, as an avid MTV watcher, at the time. Also, I had tickets to see Linkin Park in WPB Florida, just before Chester offed himself. Would have been my 3rd time seeing them and hubby's 1st time. Unfortunate stuff. Fame and fortune comes with so much pressure.
the reason why the server said Kurt seemed a bit off because he ordered desert first is because some drugs give u this really bad sugar craving and I think that's what the server meant
That gate is rarely open. I drive by in occasionally coming home from drs. That bench has been changed many times due to vandalism . Garage was demolished years ago
There's a geocache at the park next to his house. Great video Adam. It was fascinating and though I've been a fan of Nirvana forever, I learned some new things. Thanks
I remember when Smells Like Teen Spirit exploded. It would be a while before I had the album so I would tune in to Mtv to see/hear the video. They did not disappoint, it must have aired every half hour or more. I still have the VHS I recorded it onto. It's disheartening to think all of that was a mere two and a half years before he passed. Such a short amount of time.
Was watching Letterman and Blind Mellon was the musical guest. Shannon had a ? On his forehead, I didn't know why until the end of the song. Went up to my bedroom turned on the radio and bawled my eyes out. He was our generations Lennon in a way.
Another famous person who changed the world and went on to pioneer and influence popular culture, is the burial site of Bruce Lee in Lake View cemetery WA. His son Brandon is also buried with him. May they rest in peace.
God, I remember so well when Brandon Lee died! I thought about his senseless death so much when the Alec Baldwin accidental movie shooting thing happened.
@@michelehood8837 Yep, I've been to Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee gravesite in WA state.. Was anyone convicted of Brandon Lee's death? I know he died on set. Adam the Woo should visit Bing Crosby's house, Microsoft Bill Gates headquarters, Amazon Jeff Bezos, Starbucks first coffee shop. The most famous companies started in Seattle.
I saw Kurt and Courtney walking around downtown Athens, Ga. 2 or 3 times during 93. That same year Nirvana played a daytime outdoor concert right beside my dorm. I have no clue why I didn't go but I did open my dorm window and listened to the entire concert.
As a 40 year old, I can honestly say it’s very difficult to comprehend how huge Nirvana was and only on the national stage for roughly 4 years. Such a lasting impact and how weird is it that the genre died shortly after Kurt. Some say it was never meant to last anyway, but his passing definitely sped up the process. Great vlog Adam. Take care
It was huge because he was the friend, the boy friend, the brother everybody dream to have. He was charismatic, not like those movie stars but like the cool genious guy you meet at school. That's all.
@jebstuart4004 you're way the hell off...but o.k. I am frm Seattle, in my early twenties when our grunge music went mainstream, and had been going to see what then was called Fecal Matter...then going to Nirvana. They always would play with Screaming trees...which are formed and became big around the same time....their from my hometown. You must be pretty young and really dont know because you weren't there, to know. He was sarcastic as hell and didn't like to be bothered. And you never see him standing and signing autographs. Now you know the truth.
