Lived on Melbourne ave near Brisbane and off of Wilkins Ave in Baltimore awhile back. Baltimore was being transformed by commercial developers in 91, 92.
I’ve seen some retro pictures of this mall from back in the day. It has some good vibes. Looked fun. Lot of history. Malls are a thing of the past, and its a sad thing. The good times are over, and now we just have Amazon and a cyberpunk dystopia to look foreward to. Last place to meet other humans is church. Only in the US are they a thing of the past. Elsewhere malls are expanding, new locations in growth centres, business is booming. So sad society in the US has turned it's back on shopping in general. Seems the keyboard and screen has won out.
I had my first job in this mall, made many lifelong friendships etc. It's always sad when these malls go away but to be totally honest watching people walk around inside of this mall as it looks in the video has very little connection to the memories i have from the mid-late 80s and early 90s. The real truth is that if there were a demand now for this type of retail/social experience then they would not be 'dead malls'.
Thanks for the great video. Grew up in Silver Spring MD, but in the late 1980's early 90's was going to the Germantown campus of Montgomery College so spent ALOT of time at this mall, ate at the Long John Silver alot..lol. So many good memories, sad to see it go.
A TSA agent in Florida a few months ago told me he used to run the Lakeforest Mall movie theater when he saw I was from Gaithersburg from my ID. I grew up going to this mall but didn't even know they had a movie theater it closed when I was 3
Thanks for the video. Bought myself a first home near Lakefront Mall in Gaithersburg Maryland in 1988 before i270 was widened. I remember many stores including Deck the Walls was a great place for getting pictures framed and so much more I remember across Frederick Road was a Montgomery Ward and a Toys R Us.
