I'm from Brazil and I was 9 years old then. My father used to sit with me, singing the songs and translating the lyrics; therefore I can say that the Beatles were my first English teachers...

This album really shows that they weren't just 4 geniuses, they were 4 geniuses surrounded by several other geniuses. George Martin's compositional genius shows here especially on a day in the life.

Day In The Life - arguably the single greatest song in history, simply created by joining a couple of tunes John and Paul had no idea how to complete together…

When you have the chance; the Abbey Road album by the Beatles is a culmination of their 7 years together, well worth the time!

Lovely Rita came about because Paul got a kick out of hearing that in the US, women had the job to write parking tickets and they were called "meter maids" and the moaning was John being cheeky, because he could lol. For "Good Morning Good Morning", John was inspired by seeing a Corn Flakes ad on tv. I don't think the lyrics are depressing; I think they're of a guy just chilling, walking around his neighborhood. The lyrics "It's time for tea and Meet the Wife" Meet the Wife was the name of a television program at the time and "go to a show, you hope she goes" was John's subtle way of mentioning Yoko because he was still married to his wife, Cynthia and he'd met Yoko at an art show where she was exhibiting her work. The animal sounds were arranged, at John's request, so that it went up the food chain, so to speak. So you had birds, then a cat, then a dog, etc., but why a chicken at the end, I don't know lol. The reprise is a simple bit but they repeat "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely" so often, it almost sounds like they're saying Sgt. Pepper IS lonely. There is SO much going on in A Day In The Life. The man who "blew his mind out in a car" is Guinness heir, Tara Browne who died in a car crash. His father was a member of the House of Lords ("nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords"). The "film" is a reference to the film "How I Won the War" that was based on the book of the same name, that John had been in. The "crowd of people turned away" is a reference to the bad reviews the film received. The orchestra was told to go from lowest to highest note on their respective instruments for a crescendo. Paul's "woke up, got out of bed..." part was a bit of song he'd written but hadn't finished. The "4,000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire" was an article John read about the bad roads in Blackburn that were full of potholes. In a bit of hyperbole, someone in the article commented that they tried counting them and there were so many, they could fill the Albert Hall. The ending has the orchestra going from lowest to highest note again with a final chord that was created by John, Paul, Ringo, and their roadie, Mal Evans, each playing the same chord simultaneously on pianos, while producer George Martin did the same on a harmonium. The chord was made to ring out for over forty seconds by increasing the recording sound level as the vibration faded out. In addition, there was a tone, similar to a dog whistle that was added to the end. The ending is some incomprehensible studio babble that was recorded and looped and that's Paul's voice saying "never could see any other way" sped up and distorted. They truly elevated pop music to an art form.

The idea for the album cover was supposed to be the Sgt. Pepper band attending an award ceremony at a garden party attended by all their friends, idols, and even some villains (Hitler was originally on the cover but they decided to airbrush him out).

The most landmark album ever created. It changed music and popular culture over night. The list of albums that followed that would not be but for Sgt. Pepper is endless. Try The Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed" which was recorded only months after Pepper.

Listening to Lovely Rita, it strikes me that Paul doesn't get enough credit for his lyrics; mainly because his melodies are always so beautiful, not to mention all of his other strengths.

A Day In The Life is sooooo good

All the Beatles albums are great -- and stylistically diverse. John Lennon's favorite was Magical Mystery Tour because of its weirdness. A lot of fans say Revolver is their best (it directly preceded Pepper). The Beatles are very much worth listening to chronologically. The band did not repeat itself. The songwriting started strong and became more experimental and interesting over their fairly short run. Their first movie, A Hard Day's Night, is a one-of-a-kind piece of filmmaking, with a great comedic script and lots of their early songs.

Love the repeating gibberish that was on the vinyl lock out groove at the end. Awesomeness 👍

From 1962 to 1970 The Beatles put out 13 records five of those are considered masterpieces so I would suggest you at least check out the other four masterpieces that would be revolver The White album Abbey road and rubber soul

Does anyone else like "Good Morning, Good Morning" besides me? Everyone, including Lennon, probably considered it a throwaway, but I think it's accidental genius.

The end of "A Day in the :Life" would be the perfect sound track to the Death Star explosion sequence in Star Wars.

I was in a youth orchestra when this album came out. I was already a Beatles fan, but one of my fellow orchestra members was "converted" by this from a straight classical musician to a Beatles nut.

It's really wild to have listened to Sgt Pepper as your first Beatles' album! You need to listen to their earlier albums to appreciate how much the Beatles had evolved in only four years. A Hard Day's Night is my favorite from their early LPs and will make it clear why Beatlemania exploded across the world.

The song "Good Morning " was inspired by a box of Kellogs corn flakes which features the cockerel and the slogan "Good morning to you". It ends with birds being chased by a cat, being chased by a dog, being chased by a lion and assorted farmyard animals and a fox hunt following close behind.

An earlier album that I think is underrated is A Hard Day"s Night. The Beatles first attempt to write a through composed score, without resorting to covers is a 1964 triumph

I believe they put in all the animals as a response to The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album. Another great classic, you should check out some day.

They’re at “The Beatles” funeral on the cover (notice their name spelled out in the roses on the grave) because they were the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band for this album.

This is pure art at its finest and only the Beatles were capable of such a masterpice.

I recommend the albums revolver and Rubber Soul by The Beatles. They are great albums!

‘Revolver’ is musically and innovatively probably The Beatles’ greatest achievement, but ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ is personal and close to my heart. My uncle bought this album for me when it came out in 1967, saying it would be a famous record. I was 2 years old. I still have it and it’s still playable, although I played it all the time and it’s part of my earliest memories. I had my little kid records and I had ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’. I knew every word but didn’t understand all of them. For a young American kid listening to “Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”, the title itself is incomprehensible, and then words and phrases such as “Late of Pablo Fanques Fair”, “hoops and garters, Lastly through a hogshead of real fire!”, “The celebrated Mr. K”, “Bishopsgate”, “Mr. Kite flies through the ring”, “Mr. Kite is topping the bill” made no sense. It’s surreal, Victorian English Lennon uses, that I finally learned in school, but at the time was more like hearing colors to me. It was the most colorful record that I had. I’ve never thought of it before but you’re absolutely right: on the cover they’re at a funeral: death of the old drab Beatles; birth of the colorful new Beatles. I first heard of The Rolling Stones by looking at the album cover and reading the sweater on the doll.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band Reprise was actually the Beatles all four of them playing that take live, no fooling around with different tapes, just full straight out playing by the band.

First album with the entire lyric sheet printed on the back of the album. Revolutionary for its time.

Jarvis , react to to Revolver the previous Beatles album to this one. .please. More classics than you shake a stick at and possibly even more daring and revolutionary than even Pepper is. Or maybe go one forward for the jolly Sgt Pepper follow up Magical Mystery Tour album for more of the same. As a Kansas City girl, I literally had *no idea* what they were talking about. Why are there holes in BlackfordLankyshield, and why did this guy Albert Hall have to count them? 🤔😄

The order for discovery of this body of work and for listening to the Beatles as a historical phenomenon that developed over that decade is to start out with listening to their first best groundbreaking early singles (Please Please Me, I Saw Her Standing There, I Want to Hold Your Hand, She Loves You, , This Boy, Slow Down, their cover of Anna, and a small handful of deep cuts from their first two albums, All You Got To Do, It Won't Be Long, Hold Me Tight, Little Child, I Wanna Be Your Man, Then listen to A Hard Day's Night album, which breaks ground and is a true early masterpioece and the first of their albums with all original songs, no covers. Then a couple or a few cuts from Beatles for Sale (the Lennon dark songs:. No Reply, I'm a Loser, and Baby's In Black, and Paul's I'll Follow the Sun and the single I'm Down), Next the album Help!, where they reach new heights and depths and had begun smoking cannabis. Then Rubber Soul. Next the singles Paperback Writer and Rain. Then the album Revolver, The singles released as a double A side Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, then maybe listen to Sgt Pepper again and then the album Magical Mystery Tour. (You can listen to Penny Land and Strawberry Fields for the first time on Magical Mystery Tour too rather than as singles which they were, recorded at the same time as and being released before Sgt. Pepper.) Then the White Album, Then Hey Jude the single. Then Let It Be and finally Abbey Road.

The album at that time was light years ahead of what anyone else was thinking of doing . Even the album cover was totally different with all the lyrics printed on the back of the album that was never done before . From this point on not only music but the design of albums ,would change . There are so many firsts on this album . The Beatles always seemed to come up with stuff no one else even considered.

"A day In The Life" is nothing more than about bunch of articles they read in a newspaper An example is.... "I read the news today, oh boy Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire And though the holes were rather small They had to count them all Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall" This is just about the many pot holes there ....and the article said there were about 4, 000 of them. Only The Beatles could make a great song out such mundane things

I also love Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. That is a stellar album not to be missed. Of course, The Beatles will always be my favorite!

The sun was coming up as A Day in the Life began. There was a huge weeping willow in her yard. When the sun came through the tree, it didn't just glow, it exploded into light as if it were suddenly plugged into electricity just as the record ended. I like your reaction! I was 16 when this was released in May of 1967. One month before the Summer of Love. No one had ever heard the kind of songs the Beatles had created on this album. It influenced so many musicians and fans that it was a seismic event in music. An astonishing array of genres and sonic breakthroughs.

The “St Pepper” in the album title comes from Paul mishearing something somebody else said; the idea of the Lonely Hearts Club Band (and, no doubt, album cover) came from his and the band’s desire to shed their Beatles persona and start afresh as a new band, unencumbered by expectations. Please try The Cure’s Disintegration album, start to finish, without the distraction of (lyric) videos. It’s a mood!

Really good reaction vid to the second half of the album that was an earthquake.. Indescribable what this album did in the summer of 67 and beyond. Hendrix even learned the title opening song and played it in McCartney's presence.. put this album and Hendrix together in 1967 and you have a nuke that still reverberates

That last line sounds like "Never Goosey Any Other Way" was the last groove on the record. It was a perpetual reminder to take the record off of the player in case you fell asleep and it has a dog whistle blowing on it that humans can't hear but it will startle the dog as well. As a kid in the 1970s I missed that last groove because we all had automatic disk changers by then which they didn't have in the 1960s.

That last bit of nonsense....when it was on vinyl.....was designed to play indefinitely,,,,,,it wouldn't stop until you lifted the needle...... Reason being...because that last piano note faded out for so long.....the gibberish would remind stoned DJs that the tune was in fact actually over with....

"A Day In The Life" is two unfinished songs put together. John wrote the first and last third and Paul wrote the middle third. You can hear an alarm clock just before Paul's section to cue the orchestra to stop playing. It also features The Beatles roadie, Mal Evans counting the orchestra up to 24 bars so they all finish at the same time. George Martin instructed the orchestra to start their final passage at bass E and finish on a high E. The run out at the end finishes with a dog whistle. (But I've never heard it!).

That part after A Day In The Life must have been added in a recent remix. I've heard this song for 50 years and never heard that.

Been good to watch you hear this for the first time. Hope you spend the time to just hang with 'em over time, hear the 'easter eggs' in Beatles albums, like the cat turning into the dog at the animal ending of Good Morning, and the roaring lion becoming an elephant. Not everything is about making linear sense by this point in their career, where they've been smoking pot for a couple years (after Bob Dylan turned 'em on to it) and dropping acid (thanks to their dentist, who dosed them at dinner one night!). Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds conveys a lot more in vibes than you get from just the (amazing) images of the lyrics, don't ya think? And like so many things in their songs, whether Rita did the deed or not is entirely up to the listener to decide...

Mind blown by A Day In The Life? It still blows my mind 40 years since I first heard it. Their greatest single achievement (with Strawberry Fields Forever, Tomorrow Never Knows and the Abbey Road medley close behind). For the climatic orchestral section, they had to fill a missing 24 bars. Paul came up with the idea of asking the orchestra to build from their instruments’ lowest possible notes to the highest within those 24 bars. The result sounds apocalyptic. John is literally signing about stories in the day's newspaper including the death of a close friend in a car crash, exploring the nature of reality and everyday life through the pages of the tabloids. The killer line 'I'd love to turn you on' was considered deeply shocking, seen as encouraging drug use and earning it a ban by the BBC. That final chord is John, Ringo and roadie Mal Evans all playing E major chord on a piano simultaneously with producer George Martin on harmonium. The front cover depicts Sgt Pepper's band after playing a concert in a park with a host of famous people in the audience watching the show. Each Beatle was allowed to pick their heroes to include in the photo. The animal noises at the end of Good Morning Good Morning are a bit of fun, but loosely arranged in the order of animals which could prey on the one before, so a bird is followed by a cat, followed by a dog, etc. Kellogg's used to use a cockerel as part of their cereal ads for corn flakes, so I guess that's why they used it at the beginning. From here you could go back to 1966 to Revolver, which is another candidate for greatest album of all time or forward to Magical Mystery Tour, the White Album and Abbey Road. Sgt. Peppers may not even be their best album. many would say either Revolver or Abbey Road. All the Beatles albums range from great to spectacular. As some have suggested, it's worth listening to them all chronologically to see how their music evolved so much in just 6 years. Then you can understand how they were greater even than the sum of their amazing albums.

The Beatles were always good at giving you the "unexpected." Now you know how WE who were there when it was first released the summer of 1967, felt when WE heard it for the first time. We had never heard anything like that it was so different from their previous album, but still, each of their albums from their first album to their last, was different!

You should listen to the double A single ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’/ ‘Penny Lane’. They were intended to be on Pepper, but were released as a single. Also, you should check out the Beatle self-titled double album, commonly referred to as ‘the white album’.

Please react to Abbey Road and then Revolver. Those are my 2 favorite Beatles albums and have some of their best music IMO.

Till the day I die I will always enjoy watching people listen to Day In The Life for the first time, and watching their faces change during the crescendo, that 'end of the world approaching' look... and I always enjoy the come-down on that last chord, it evens everything out and lets the sun shine again... pure magic.

I so agree with the vivid colours bit. It’s one of the few albums I have that strong association with (it’s like an orangey, coral red type colour for me for the record!), one of the others is blur’s the great escape (blue) and parklife (reddy/ yellow) weirdly enough. Maybe it’s not old enough yet, but parklife would be a good one to go through if you haven’t heard it.

I have listened to “ A day in the life” so many times in my life but just heard something new. I had always interpreted to lyrics to be a commentary on modern life and popular media reporting styles. But today, I looked at the orchestral wall of sound as actually a speeded up soundtrack of life until it comes to a shattering end and the final chord of infinity. Wow, the Beatles can still surprise.

The Good Morning you sang was from the Movie, "Singin' in the Rain". The three main characters stayed up all night rewriting a movie script. It goes, "Good Moring, good morrrrrrning, we've worked the whole night through, good morning, good morning to YOU!"

Lennon's background vocals in "Lovely Rita" are so damn haunting........

I don't know why, but I"ve never heard that little bit at the end. Total surprise to me.

For that last note on “A Day in the Life” George Martin wanted to capture every bit of the note. The sound pots were turned up to maximum & if you listen very closely, you can hear the air conditioning unit in the studio. He really wanted that last note to stand out

That final piano chord (actually three pianos) is a punctuation mark. There is the music that came before it, and the music that came after it. It was the end of one phase, and the start of another. World changing. Paved the way for Pink Floyd's experiments, psychodelia, and more. Incidentally, that weird thing at the very end was recorded on the 'inner track'. It would repeat and repeat until you got off your bum and took the needle off. Many people never even heard it, because many record players would lift the needle automatically and return it before the track started. Great job on the review of this mostly sunny album -- thank you for letting us enjoy the ride with you.

That last bit of babbling nonsense was there specifically for "The Interpreters" those folks who try to find some hidden meaning, or disguised clue to ... "Paul Is Dead" which is what the connected from track one and the name Billy Shears and A Day In The Life "He blew his mind out in a car" McCartney was killed in a motor accident and a double was found to secretly replace him. There's a faint voice in the trailing end of I Am The Walrus (Magical Mystery Tour) that slowly utters ... well, I'll let you find out for yourself. You mentioned that it looked like they were attending a funeral on the cover. It’s worth mentioning that their manager Brian Epstein had died recently and they had also stopped going out on tour. So in a sense their live act had also died.So they invented this fictional band. It is a concept album. The idea is that the album would go on tour. They were also able to do things that they couldn’t do live. So they use the studio to its full potential of the time. There is an element of variety in this album. As in an entertainment variety show.

yeah. they went there. they really went there. that song announced to the world that the beatles werent fing around any more. they were telling it like it was, the light AND the dark. and boy, was there darkness...

Now you should listen to the entire album again on your own, with no interruptions. Just put your headphones on, turn out the lights, and chill.

Consensus greatest album by the consensus greatest band.

I mean, continuing from Sgt pepper or the beginning of their discography are both pretty interesting journeys. They had quite the dynamic lil career in their 7ish years of recording. Separately, you can't go wrong with Yes, particularly their albums from 71/72. And Chicago's first few albums are all classics. That's uh, substantially more than is reasonable to recommend. I uh, sorry.

I would highly recommend listening to revolver or abbey road. Revolver was when they really started to experiment a bit with music while abbey road was when they found a great balance between experimentation and tradition in my opinion.

Paul met a Meter Maid whose first name was META (really) and that was his inspiration for the song. Many years later for the 20th anniversary Sgt. Pepper's release, they found her and was interviewed by some news shows.

The album cover funeral is about the Beatles burying their teenage pop idol self and introducing their new sound.

I just have to hit that final chord ;) I’ll let others address overall. That chord sent shockwaves rippling around the world. No human had ever heard - or even considered doing anything like that in music before, not even classical. But I think even more importantly, part of the shock was PERSONAL recognition! No matter where on earth you lived, if you had access to a piano as a child, at some point you tested that damper pedal to see how long a note or chord would last. It’s HUMAN. And this is the musical equivalent of Proust taking one bite of a madeleine and instantly being pulled back through a lifetime of memories. It’s a perfect example of the Beatles true, world cultural genius: very sophisticated, understanding the full range of emotional existence, yet childlike simplicity all in a single moment or concept. Even today they are STILL deserving of accolades. (As is Proust) 😊

Another great album you can check out-certainly not comparing with Pepper because comparisons really don’t make sense. But in terms of another great theme album, I invite you to check out Nico and Vinz’s “Black Star Elephant”. Like Pepper to the Beatles, “Black Star Elephant” is a character alter ego of Nico and Vinz.

Fun fact: if you play the part at the very end that says “never kiss me any other way” over and over backwards it clearly says “we’ll fuck you like we’re Superman”. Great reaction vids; it was fun

great reaction:) .......when i first heard this album, and the "sgt pepper reprise", back in 1994, the reprise drumming reminded me of hip hop drumming also, and i listened to this album all thru that summer, and whenever i'd hear that song and especially the intro, everytime,,hip-hop came to mind...good vibes.
