Fast paced and thorough review, pointing out all the strong points (image quality, versatility, size, weight) and the sub-optimal features (image size changes in focus racking and slower focus acquisition than other lenses in the range).

Great review. Thanks. Hopefully it’s not the last lens in this series. A 135mm would be great. Come to think of it, I’m not impressed by the 24mm, so a 28mm to match the 50mm (also in IQ) would be great as well.

I can't see how they'd squeeze 135mm into this size but maybe, who knows. I think that all S line lenses deliver same optical quality. Why were you not impressed with 24mm?

@@PavSZ yeah, it will be a challenge to squeeze it in. Perhaps we shouldn’t mind the lens barrel to be a bit longer. I wasn’t impressed by the 24 because I found the corner/edge sharpness to be quite a bit poorer than that of esp. the 50 and 85, but also compared to the 35 and 18. It also shows in the MTF charts when you compare them. The 24 dips quite a bit earlier out of the centre to values around 50%. That makes the lens less suited for architecture and urban landscape, compared to e.g. the Sigma 24 iSeries. I’ve been using the lens on an SL2 and an SL2-S.

Can I get your opinion on getting the Lumix 85mm 1.8 vs this lens? Right now I have the Lumix 35mm and a zoom lens, but I'm looking to add one more prime specifically for portraiture. I could see myself using macro for some videos, but can this be a substitute for the 85mm in your opinion? Also, your reviews are great! Just subscribed :)

Hi, I saw a couple of your vids , and decided to buy the S5, but which lens is a good overall lens to start with ? So , yes , everything portraits, landscapes, video...etc :) And focussing on quality rather then quantity. So if there is no such lens,which two lenses would recommend ?

A good companion for the Leica SL2/SL2s and the comming SL3 as well. That said, I expect Leica come with a metal version of the lense as they have done with the 35 and 50 last year.

Pav, now that you have your website up and running, I’d like to see you do a video dedicated to showing different images that feature your pre-sets. I think it would help people decide which pre-sets work with different scenes. Just a friendly suggestion.😊

all images in every single review of mine in the last 2+ years were edited using these presets. I might add the name of the preset onto the photos from now on. Working on a next review now. See how it looks

Testing it out in your next video is a great idea. You might be get some blowback from a really small segment of viewers who think you're over-marketing your pre-sets but, if so, blame it entirely on me. I can handle it.🙂 My opinion is that you've done some really fine work with these pre-sets so why not let viewers know about them? BTW, I also really like how you include the lens information on each shot. I find it is really helpful and a very nice touch. Thanks so much for your ongoing commitment to this channel. @@PavSZ

It is a Lumix lens designed for Lumix cameras - this works very well with focus bracketing

Seems quite amazing one! Have you had a chance to compare it to Sony 90mm 2.8 Macro? I always thought of it as great lens but since I'm switching to Lumix I'm quite excited about this 100mm coming up and it seems a better lens as well, but maybe it's just an impression.

I own the Sony 90mm as well. Great lens. I love the pull/push focus switch but ... it is bigger and heavier than this. Quality wise, Lumix compares very well. Overall I think it is marginally better than Sony. Really easy to use and it matches externally all other lenses in S lens line up

Lens design mandates that optimum quality will be at one particular focal distance. A macro lens is naturally optimised for close focus. Hence it is unlikely to be as good for other tasks, for example portraiture. This is quite clear from your shots. (Beautiful photos, by the way!) The sharpness of the Lumix 85mm is not present here... and neither is the lovely bokeh. The 100mm has a more nervous feeling. If this was priced at €600 like the other Lumix S primes then it would be good value. But it's €1100. Yikes! I already have three manual macro lenses, all excellent sharpness, though generally large and heavy. But on a tripod that doesn't matter. And, as you rightly point out, AF is not necessary for this task. So this lens has some tough competition.

I don't know what you mean. This lens has got the sharpness of the Lumix 85mm. No doubt. It has got less of shallow depth of field as it is only f2.8. The thing is that you can't do proper macro with the 85mm but you can do macro and the portrait with this one. It is more expensive but they have done something new and unique here. There is no other macro lens this size and weight on the market. It is the same size as other S line lenses and it does deliver outstanding results for all types of photography in my opinion (and I have used a lot of lenses)

@@PavSZ "This lens has got the sharpness of the Lumix 85mm. No doubt." Except that this is very much in doubt. Read the Digital Camera World which shows very bad sharpness until stopped down. And what about field flatness? This is essential for a macro. No review has yet measured this.

@@RobinParmar I don't need to read Digital Camera World to have my own opinion. I do own all the S line lenses and several Sony (including 90mm macro), Nikons and Fuji lenses. I am not a stranger to a lens - I am very lucky to be able to use a lot of them regularly. This is what I am basing my opinion on, experience. Digital Camera World might have had a bad copy. The one I have been using is very sharp. Depth of field is very shallow when shooting macro. This is the same and standard when it comes to macro lenses, even when shooting at f8 or f16. This is why you use focus stacking. This is not unusual. It is a different lens than the 85mm, different tool for a different job but it is not less sharp in real world situations I have used it at.
