Here is a minimalist and sustainable wardrobe update! I want to share what is in my closet right now, what I think about buying new things and decluttering, and what my struggles and lessons are after having a small capsule wardrobe for 8 years.

Your restraint is admirable, but I think getting blisters is a sign that the shoes are no longer functional, and you shouldn’t be cold through winter just to avoid getting a second coat, especially when there are so many sustainable options. Partly, it seems to me, the point of minimalism is to spend less time thinking about clothes, but how much time have you spent thinking about the right time to declutter a worn out item? Imo, find a sustainable replacement and get back to enjoying your life with functional clothing.

for anyone who would like to reference, Lia's count: 33 clothes + 6 shoes i have found in my own journey was like yours; i decluttered down to 23 clothing items (this helped me identify my style), after that phase my wardrobe entered it's expansion phase. now i'm at 45 items & *i do not need any more*! i expect this to fluctuate a little bit, but mostly i'll just replace what wears out. don't worry, your wardrobe won't continue to explode :)

I was very into minimalism a few years ago, and have now relaxed a bit too. I think during the Marie kondo era minimalism was very strict and almost obsessive. I ended up getting rid of a lot, but that included at least a couple pieces I regret. I also have a different mindset now on the responsible thing to do with things I don’t wear that much. If it’s unlikely to be bought by somebody in a charity shop, it would probably end up in landfill and so I’d be better to keep it. Some items are also just sentimental and it’s okay to keep them too even if I hardly wear! I have a few sweaters from trips I went on that have my initials etc. so yeah, I’m learning to be a bit more thoughtful before throwing something out.

i think you are already doing so much and are so considerate and mindful with each item you bring into your home, you deserve not having the added stress of working around items that are falling apart. i know i have items that have holes or stains that i still love and enjoy wearing... but if there is something you no longer feel good in, it's probably time to let go?

Ah, the problem of clothes that wear out. I have felt like the only person who ends up with holes and wonders whether to fix them one more time. I use a "rule" of three holes: in my experience, when an item of clothing gets its third hole, the fabric has become so worn and thin that it does not make sense to fix it again. It is just going to wear out right next to the mend in no time.

We sometimes keep parts of old clothes as scrap fabric so when another items with similar materials break we can patch it, we mostly do this with jeans as we do everything in jeans.
@elinatuuli
@elinatuuli 7 месяцев назад
Yes, I do that too. I also use clothes as napkins, tissues and rags. Now I have also been thinking about making a t-shirt blanket. It might be interesting as I mostly wear black clothes without prints.@@relaxingsleepstudyaudio7378

Great video. You are very thoughtful. I have decided that I will not have more than one t shirt I do not want to wear anymore. One is enough for cleaning and other chores. Now, some people do not mind wearing clothes with holes , but it’s not for me. It’s totally ok to retire a garment that is done. I always cut it and clean my place with it till it’s completely gone. I want to feel good in my clothes no matter how small my wardrobe. Sustainable living is very important for me as well and there is a million ways to be sustainable as you already work so hard to do. So, it’s ok to let go what is done.

I think that you can look for second hand shirts to replace yours with holes. Then cut up the old shirt to use as a rag for cleaning. That way the fabric is still being used and a new garment isnt being created

If the shoes are causing damage to your feet then that's when you have to draw the line on being cheap. Ur feet are important and they require good shoes to heal.

You have helped me so much pairing down my closet. One thing about summer verses winter, is although you don't need as many clothes, you have to wash them more frequently where I live because it's so humid where I live. Now winter is coming, and I need to invest in some good thermal undergarments, because that same humidity that causes it to be so hot makes the cold chill to the bone. I figure that way I don't need to invest in bulky clothes as I can just layer my current winter clothing them over the thermals. Also, That sweater you are knitting is going to be gorgeous. Love the yarn!

Random but the shirt at 13.59 (time stamp) I would stitch the neck and maybe re-dye it with coffee, just an idea. I have a white shirt just like that and I might fix the neck with some stitches. Just an idea. Hello from the USA 😊

I don’t think you need to worry too much about your wardrobe exploding given the rate you have been adding items, at the current rate you’ll probably start wearing out the older things before you grow out of your space, also, for worn out clothes you don’t need to get rid of them until you feel gross just wearing them, also, if the fabric/trims are in good shape you can upcycle, if the fabric falls apart if you hold it wrong it’s time to make rags (face rags, dish rags, cleaning rags)
@lovelasnow
@lovelasnow 7 месяцев назад
I also follow alternate fashion and have a hard time getting rid of items that are not apart of the big brands, because it feels bad to only have a “brand names” wardrobe, but unbranded items are just not as wearable at my current comfort level and there’s that,”what if I’m comfortable with it later?” mentality

The problem with a minimalist wardrobe is each piece wears out quickly. If you have, lets say, 20 or 30 sweater and you wear each one a couple of times each season they will last for at least a decade if its good quality. Therefore its just as sustainable as long as these pieces are worn until they fall apart 😊
@shortcityvlogs
@shortcityvlogs 7 месяцев назад
Noticed this too!
@ecofriendlia
@ecofriendlia 7 месяцев назад
Yes absolutely! Sustainability wise it is the same, as long as the sweater is worn for the same amount of time. The only thing that could be less sustainable with a bigger wardrobe would be when sweaters break down on their own (like certain elastane fabrics) while they are sitting in the back of your wardrobe 😊 or if there are so many sweaters that you can't wear them out in a lifetime 😊
@MOONWALKMusic
@MOONWALKMusic 7 месяцев назад
@@ecofriendlia Exactly. I have decluttered my wardrobe to the point where there are enough pieces to make them last long enough to avoid excessive wear but at the same time it’s as minimal as possible so everything is worn and it doesn’t take up too much space and I don’t have to buy anything new for years to come. I find this to be the best solution and I would still call it minimal. For t-shirts I’m no longer buying ones that contain elastane as they wear out so quickly, even higher quality ones from Hessnatur here in Germany. I found a shirt from Hessnature that contains no elastane, it’s made to last for years and I’ve decluttered all the elastane ones.

I'm glad you are decluttering organic basics. I struggle most with the expensive, sustainable stuff. I'm going to wear the jumper I have a few more times and then I will declutter in the summer.

I just had to get rid of one of my favorite shirts because my narutal deodorants have stained the armpits. It's the only shirt I have that problem with... so I guess it's the material of the shirt. It's long sleeves, and a greenish beigish color. It makes me so sad tho 😢

You could put a final effort into saving the shirt by boiling it in water with a cup of bicarbonate soda for an hour or two. It’s called laundry stripping and I have done it with success.
