The missile nicknamed the 'finger of god', which has been used in every American conflict since Vietnam, is being used to terrorise Russian armour in Ukraine.
The Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wireless-guided weapon system, also known as the TOW missile, is a heavy anti-tank precision assault weapon system consisting of a launcher and a missile.
The weapon system has been used by the American military since the Vietnam War and during the conflict in Iraq.

What people tend to forget is that the US, the UK, France, Germany and the rest of NATO spent decades developing a way of waging war to defeat massive Soviet/Russian armored formations. Not surprisingly... we're really good at it by now.

@@MrBen527 The first WW2 era German missiles like the Ruhrstahl X4, X7 and X10 that used wire guidance used what I've had described as piano wire about 0.018 or 0.022 inch (from a British article) of the top of my head. The wire would have been insulated with enamel similar to that used in motor windings. The wire bobbins were hollow, and the fire was drawn of from the inside of the bobbin which was axially aligned. It wasn't a reel but a bobbin and the wire came of the hollow inside. Piano Wire isn't copper but high carbon spring steal. Its conductivity would have been 10x worse than pure copper but not a problem over that sort of distance. A hollow bobbin about the size of a coke can would give about 1.5km of wire. On some of the German missiles it was planned to replace the bobbin with a directional polyrod aerial as a drop in replacement allowing the missile to receive signals 25cm from the rear by insensitive to signals from the front. Pulse Position modulation was used to minimise jamming. Yes, this is my mastermind subject. FuG 208/FuG 238 Duren/Detmold Wire Guidance System (Transmitter Receiver Pair) FuG 510/FuG 540 Kogge/Brigge High Frequency 1200Mhz/25cm impulse modulated using directional polyrod antenna was to be the core of a number of German guided missiles with development starting in 1944. It was designed to be very immune to jamming and a drop in replacement for the wire bobbins.
@maurvir3197
@maurvir3197 Год назад
They do break, but as long as you have at least one wire, the missile can still receive pitch and yaw guidance. Only the DC commands, such as the shutter command, fail (for obvious reasons). The wire itself is nichrome stainless steel, and yes, it will cut limbs extremely easily. As in, simply getting it wrapped around your limb and pulling away too hard could result in severe injury. Which is why I hope Ukraine got the wireless versions - otherwise, people are going to be injured by the leftover wire for a long time. Interestingly, assuming my contact at Raytheon is correct, the wireless versions were not prompted by a need to improve the guidance system, but by the fact that the last people who knew how to make the bobbins retired. The bobbins have to unwind a few kilometers of wire in seconds, and apparently they were really hard to make. The benefit is that TOW is literally not capable of being jammed short of successfully hitting the gunner. As long as the gunner has your tank in his sights, you are going to have a very, very bad day. I'm less clear on RF TOW, though I suppose we may get to see how they fare against a more modern military. They would be significantly safer than wire-guided TOW for helicopters, though. Wire-guided TOW has a very nasty failure mode where the DEU will cause the round to go straight up in the air with maximum pitch. I was too young for Vietnam, but I have been told by gunners that the wire is strong enough to foul rotors.

@H0kram
@H0kram Год назад
I'm not sure if they're giving out the new model. They can't have that much of it, as far as I know it's in use since 2012 only, compared to the much more common wired version. And that one is cheaper than a javelin ( missiles ). The TOW also seem more reliable at longer range, so it's not quite the same use as the javelin.
@truckjones3798
@truckjones3798 Год назад
Range: 3750 m for the TOW and 2500 m for Javelin. Also, availability of Javelin is limited; when fire-and-forget and portability are not required, TOW comes in. Moreover: Bradley IFV’s have TOW launchers integrated.

@@VR46314 The West may be collectively stupid in some regards, but it is not stupid enough to allow Russia to win in Ukraine. Over the many decades since WW2 the West has built a global system of international agreements and institutions that are meant to regulate international affairs in a fair way and to dissuade more powerful states to use force against weaker neighbors - which was pervasive in past centuries. That's what the war in Ukraine is about - whether this system stands or collapses. That system collapsing would be a catastrophe for the West - new armed conflicts would start up left and right, significantly reducing worldwide security, moving focus away from stringent problems of the contemporary world which didn't exist in the past and, most importantly, significantly impacting business. That would be a huge threat to the cozy and comfortable life of people in the West, and would cause political crises affecting all politicians. Obviously, politicians don't want their positions threatened. Therefore, they'll do what's needed to defeat Russia in Ukraine. And will then proceed to bring more and more countries into the Western fold, promoting Western style democracy everywhere where it is able to get a foothold. And while Western style democracy is an appallingly bad governing system, there no better one that humanity is aware of.

To put this in perspective. The TOW2B has a dual mode down looking sensor that picks the most vulnerable aim point for the dual explosively formed penetrator (EFP) warheads. These warheads each pack a punch comparable to a 105 HE AT round, albeit fired at almost point blank range using an EFP warhead. It remains to be seen if even the most effective tank CIWS Close In Weapon System (e.g Trophy) could defeat this combination before a countermeasure to the CIWS can be incorporated.

Almost all TOW missiles in existence are wire guided. There are a small number of radio guided ones but they have only been in use for a decade and make up a small number of what is out there. A number of the radio guided ones are bunker busting TOWs as well. Wire guidance has some benefits over radio or laser beam riding as a jamming and smoke screens are ineffective against them, particularly with thermal optics. Wire guided can have issues flying over wide areas of water though as the wires can ground if they touch the water and also bushes and trees can be an issue if the wires get caught and they are broken.

Now we have public idiots that can't do menial tasks much less complex and challenging ones. Fortunately the military selection process is a bit better. The guidance system for this missile was developed in Albany, Georgia. My last drill instructor at Marine Military Academy, Master Gunnery Sergeant Arthur Cohan, worked on it before he retired and came to work at MMA. Later in life he would kill his wife using a pillow and then blow up his house with both of them in it. It was a mercy-killing, as she was in excruciating pain for years from an accident and couldn't take it any more, and he could not live without her because he loved her so. Everyone who knew them understood and didn't hold it against him. I've been with my wife 32 years now, so I understand it now, too.
