This is such an exciting step towards mainstream AR! I'm so tempted to get one to try my hand at AR development but I'm sure it would just join my collection of early adapter duds. Please do keep covering AR content as this exciting field tries to catch up with VR.
Great video as always, Cas! I've been working with the Nreal Light Developer Kit since August 2020 and recently upgraded to the retail kit. The field of view is a concern but it's actually a bit larger than some of the other solutions currently on the market. I enjoy the vibrant colors that the glasses offer and it's perfect for consuming content. It's not really great yet for mixed reality mode as there's only a small number of applications available. FarePlay, Figmin XR and the work that mixed.world have been doing really show the potential though for the device. Hand tracking still being in its infancy will also only improve over time.
Hello! I wanted to ask couple questions: 1. Are these glasses a better alternative than to buy a huge tv? Considering that these cost about 500€ and tv's with the same screen size are about 2k-3k€. 2. Is it possible to connect it to pc? 3. Will this kind of technology ruin eyesight quicker than regular monitors? 4. Is it possible to have a sharp image if I have bad eyesight? Thank you in advance, and have a nice day Erik! ^^
@@basyki 1. It is hard for me to answer that. In some cases, yes it can be better than a TV but if you're using with your phone to stream content it also impacts battery life which could be as little as 1.5 hours depending on your phone. The vertical field of view is also reduced which may not be optimal for using as a viewscreen. Viewing content is definitely the best use case for now with the Nreal Light and similar devices. 2. Yes but you need to have a computer that supports Display over USB-C or purchase a powered adapter. I have the SIIG HDMI to USB-C port 4K 60hz converter adapter and I can watch and listen to content from my PC. These will NOT work at this point with PC for viewing mixed reality, augmented reality or virtual reality content. 3. No, it's just OLED screens near your eyes. No worse than a smartphone for example. 4. The Nreal Light ships with a frame that you can take to have your prescription lenses fit into.
👍😍 Own it for half a year. Pros: It's portability and form factor. It's perfect to watch videos in Bed, with the plastic cap on it you lay comfy in your pillow without disturbing anyone. Cons: FoV still needs an upgrade even though it's good compared to other devices in the market. Compatibility with phones is poor. Even variants of the same phone maybe not supported. Overall - would purchase again.
How long are you able to use it regularly? Does it die quickly with regular use vs heavy use? Is there a way to charge your phone while still using the headset?
I've also read somewhere that the nreal light is/should be windows 10 compatible? have you been able to try/confirm that? as that would be amazing to give you multiple screens to work with i'd imagine.
Hello, First please allow me to say thank you so much for everything you do for our community. You two are so awesome, by the way I love the love between you two. WOW... Back to the video, this was an amazing review as always. With regards to your questions: My Thoughts on AR? I think this will be equally as big as VR and that it's smart for everyone to invest and experience both of these technologies. I don't think one can replace the other. These technologies have their own unique use cases that without a shadow of a doubt will play their own part within our amazing future to come. As I am getting into development of my own projects and idea I know I have some unique developments I want to do in both of these separately. One of my favorite AR uses thus far is the map features and what I think it will do for people who need help navigating in malls, driving/riding a bike anywhere and other map uses. Again I have some ideas that I feel could make these better. Hopefully me and the CorpriA Development Team will be able to bring this to life. My Thoughts on the #NRealLight? As for this amazing piece of tech, I love that they are paving the way for this Technology for the future. This like other pieces of hardware will be forever edged into history as the leading Hardware and Software that made it all possible. I love that you can use it with your sell. I don't like that it's not available on the apple platform. However being on the Android platform allow so much more development options, much more freedom when it come to source code options and more. Many people will be able to develop more use for this tech beyond what the company creating this hardware will be able to do. I feel from the uses I saw you share with us that this has it's own lane and for many people this will be the alternate by of the Oculus and that's so hard for me as I'm a huge fan of this piece of hardware. Would I get an NReal Light? With me being the owner of the Oculus, I don't see any reason to purchase this tech other than to experiment learn more about it and/or maybe develop some software for use of this device to allow this to be able to compare or at least be worth the price that's being listed for this item at this time. Why grab this tech now while it's so new and still being a working progress when there is something like the Oculus which is completely standalone, it allow you to use it as a regular VR headset connected to the PC, It has Android Built into it, It maintains a battery well and there are extended options for power with the Oculus, you have a much large field of view options, and so much more in my option. I will give this to them, you don't have to have a facebook account to have this device which is a plus however this price point is $599 when the Oculus you could use with an app on the apple platform or android platform. So to answer this question, right now I would say it's not worth purchasing at this price especially for the general public. I think as a TechHEAD like myself and others around the internet this would be an awesome addition to our collection of hardware and that it's a great tool to geek out with while it has so much more potential to be so much more and if it got to that level it would be worth the asking price. So right now I would say "No" I wouldn't want to purchase this. I don't like being to limited with my hardware although I feel this hardware won't be limited for too long. Furthermore I'd like to go on and say with just a bit more work and creating something that allows apple users to use this will make though competition for apple as they are planning for their headset to be in the price point area of $1000.00. So with some changes this would more than likely be a better choice for those looking for a bargain to get into this technology and use this cross-platform. One last thing, I'm giving these thought without actually using this device. If I ever get the chance to own this and experiment with this not to mention if me and my team get a wack at the development for this hardware I'm sure most of this comment would be very different. Oh well, I guess this is what it is for now... Thanks, ~Ray and the CorpriA Family.
I don't have the phone compatible these are a must have. I want to sit and watch multiple things being played. This is a necessity on a college campus the possibilities are literally endless!
Pretty impressive, although I'm definitely filing this under "things that get me excited about the future" rather than something I would invest in now. The fact that we are this close gets me excited about future AR endeavors coming from Meta, Apple, and Samsung, which I'm sure aren't too far off. Once AR gets good enough to be mainstream, there are some really cool things to look forward to. I would love to play board games remotely, for example, and bring the avatars or holograms of the person I'm playing with into my physical/virtual space.
I just tried hololens for the first time at the d.c. natural history museum . As you mentioned here the field of view is too narrow and takes you off from the immersion. I'm glad there are other competitors but we probably have to wait for a couple of more device generations for it to be mature and ready for prime time. 600 vs 3500 of holo is a huge difference. Might give it a try.
AR is something I've been excited for years. As a gamer, i believe VR is better for gaming. But AR has soooo many other possibilities that would be cool like meetings, in a work place having more space to put like virtual monitors, white boards, calendars, and so on all around you. Being able to see an item quickly in front of you to check its size and how it looks, for example think shopping on Amazon or Ikea or something and seeing how an object you want will look right in your space, an option to instantly pop up a model in AR and position it to see if it works or not, it saves time using a tape measure and trying to visualize in your head. Artists i could see AR being very helpful in modeling or painting and such being able to pop in inspirational objects and place it wherever. Musical instruments like the Piano demo you tried where you can see notes of a song coming down and you hit the keys to the notes and learn to play on your actual keyboard. In kitchen having timers, recipes, a RU-vid video you're watching teaching you how to cook something that you could play/pause etc and put wherever you need it would be amazing, right now i tend to play with my phone trying to have a recipe page open but then your hands are often dirty and it's a pain to try and pick up your phone and scroll around and so on. There just an endless list of things I've thought about that would make AR amazing, but i feel like it would be many years before any of this could become a reality, but is exciting for the future.
There are a different pair of not well advertized AR glasses that is extremely similar to the Nreal but is not locked to Verizon. They are called the Mad Gaze Glow Plus, and they have been on Amazon for about a year.
You should try these glasses while using the tapstrap wearable mouse/keyboard. The TapStrap's air mouse mode combined with AR glasses is a pretty cool experience once you get used to it.
Would I get one? Yes! indeed but my main wonder is. Well if I put some kind of lens protector on the lenses or even darkened protector... Would that help with the bright 😎 light issue? 🤔 🧐 I wonder. Cheers guys 😊
Well I assume it would. The glasses VR cover helps in very sunny locations, but it also cover the trackers and you lose the 6dof. So darkening the glasses is a good idea actually.
With advancements in VR and AR I feel excited about our future. Maybe this will all advance into a mixture between AR and VR. Like, you could be in a virtual space in VR chat, but you suddenly want privacy, so you invite some of your friends to your place to your place and now you're all there, but in AR for you; VR for the others.
Well that's going to be a very long future. This is just screens and sensors. No CPU, battery, cooler, etc.... It's a miracle they even got it this small 🤣 for now I'll settle for this because I'm not ready to give up the phone just yet 👍
to be able to connect with pc and use as monitor with that pannels can be big advantage i will buy instead of second or third bulky monitor for plugins and it can rise the productivity and workflow for many daws conntent creators
I remember seeing the developer kit, was considering buying one, then COVID 🙃 lost my job, I will get another job, then I will buy the glasses and use them with my Moto Z2 force...
Looks awesome! I'm gonna wait till we get a more solid model though. I remember buying the original Oculus Quest and then the 2nd one came out like a year ish later smh. But super excited for AR to really flesh it self out!
The problem with lightweight is they break easy. I lost count how many glasses I lost, sat on, scratched, bent ect. 🙄 I hope it comes with a indestructible case. And it needs similar support from game developers and multimedia before I'd consider one.
Is there a chance that the glasses can be fully used by other countries? For me, this exact model is the best at least for the moment on the market, but hand tracking options I still can't use them... Tips on how to connect them to Samsung Fold 2?
But I had the Oculus DK1 and DK2 before it launched -- but long before that I was using VR in the 90s. This seems closer to where VR as in the 90s as opposed to the DK1, but progress is being made and maybe in a few more years we have something that is consumer ready. It's going to be interesting to see what the Apple AR glasses are like, assuming they ever see a release.
@Harold Yeh so why ain't it happening? Here's this company with this yet "Meta" or Apple haven't been able to bring a product to market. Sure "Meta did great with the Quest and Quest2 but now they seem to think they can just bank on that and retire and Apple is just being a tease.
Cool, and not a terrible price, but still a tough sell -- about what I would have guessed. AR has some serious challenges that VR doesn't. Being able to perform occlusion with objects in your space takes a lot of processing, and your phone or an onboard chip just aren't going to cut it for at least the next five years.
@@erobusblack4856 A wander version would be cool. I can imagine using the glasses waiting for the metro and hitting someone or waking i ton a dangerous platform.
This looks so cool! I love the idea, sadly the FOV is to low, same with the holo lens that I tried before. When it gets to the same level as a quest two I will instally buy one.
Looks interesting, but I can't see myself using these on a regular basis. I'll wait until the tech has matured further and until there are more use cases.
if everyone waits for it to get good noone will invest in the tech because they think people arent interested and therefore they wont build cool use cases . an anoying paradox
@@xrdeveloper942 Sure, but if the tech isn't good or useful enough you will only convince some enthusiasts and not the masses. The long-term success of XR-devices should be a pretty safe bet to invest in.
Please understand there is a big difference between AR and MR (Mixed Reality - Extended Reality - XR). It has nothing to do with 3DOF or 6DOF tracking - it's about if a object can be anchored to the real word (if your head position changes - the object locks to a physical position in the real world - i.e. it doesn't move with you) These are MR (or XR) glasses - think of them as a poor person's version of a Magic Leap.
I don't understand AR for video games. I imagine the use for working, theater, museum... But I don't want video games into my room. I want to be into video games with VR.
If you think about it. In 2025 a pair of advanced AR glasses can replace several hi devinition screens in your office or living room with a great FOV, visual quality and performance. From an environmental perspective it´s much better because you need way less resouces manufacturing AR glasses instead of many screens and energy consumption is down as well.
i feel like if your phone is still in your hand that beats the point of ar haha . good advancements though and its getting more and more affordable thats cool . meta will be able to sell theirs so cheap though so ill wait
as someone who wears glasses but does not wear contactlenses, i am a little bit jealous --- because i am pretty sure it will take a long time till these glasses can change their presciption by themselfes (if that is even possible ever) --- but if it ever is possible, it will be a gamechanger
So the image would be better if there was occlusion... like the pass-through mode on VR goggles. And the image would be better if the light wasn't so bright, such as something to block and control your vision completely.... like a pair of VR goggles. And the image needs a better FOV, like say a pair of VR goggles has. Call me a poor-man's Nostradamus, but I think I see where the future of AR is headed.
I think it's a great step in the right direction but for now it just needs some tweaks then everyone will be in aww when they put them on. I think I'll wait a few years to see how the glasses improve before handing over my hard-earned money. I can also see people forgetting them somewhere and losing those glasses that cost so much.
I just need them to look like regular glasses so I can use them in class. I can't be the only one thinking about this. For studying purposes of course.🤫
