I think in the future you may wanna use balistics gel instead of just a plastic mannequin for this kind of test. The gel gives in and is a little bit more realistic than the hard mannequin (of course, just using a whole pig carcass would be even better, but that might be a bit much).

Now, consider that during an actual combat it wouldn't be that easy to deliver such precise thrusts. Armor doesn't need to be perfect - just good enough, and I think that this one does it's job. I'd take shallow cuts and punctures over fatal injury any time.
@Asiliea
@Asiliea 4 года назад
Considering that it's light enough to give you significantly more flexibility than full or even half plate armour, it would not only be good enough preventing significant harm if hit, but also in maneuvering away from it, allowing to more easily parry. Because of this, surely it would require significantly more skill to wear into war? Especially when surrounded by metal-clad foot soldiers, like Alexander was. Perhaps it being near-white and thus unmarked from blood and dirt, as well as appearing to be weaker and softer than metal, he was boasting of his still to _avoid_ harm, rather than protect from it. Very cool stuff!
@Ellanion
@Ellanion 4 года назад
@@Asiliea Outside of DnD there's no such thing as half plate, and even a full suit of armour does very little to hinder mobility. It's heavy and will make you tired a lot quicker, and most helmets will limit hearing, vision and sometimes breathing, but usually the only range of movement even slightly impeded is lifting arms above head. Alexander wearing one is likely because it's much lighter, less warm, more comfortable, and because he wasn't on the front line. A carefully made, custom-fitted suit of linothorax would have provided enough protection and be a status symbol just from how wellmade it was.
@NaoyaYami
@NaoyaYami 4 года назад
@@Asiliea Armor that significantly limits someone's mobility is a very poorly made armor. Strength was of course important in melee combat but not as much as reaction time and mobility required to use those reflexes. Armor is the last defense - even if it protects you from fatal injuries it usually doesn't protect against pain and bruises. Just look at .22 bullet test (I may have typed it incorrectly - I'm not well-educated in firearms): it got stopper sure, but imagine the pain of being hit by this protrusion. An axe test was also good example of how armor wasn't the perfect defense - it could easily break bones beneath armor with a good hit. Shield was way earlier invention and as long as you could see an attack coming (melee or even some projectiles) you'd be better prepared to defend than with just armor (moving just hands to redirect a blow is usually easier than moving whole body).
@corwinweber693
@corwinweber693 4 года назад
@@NaoyaYami You likely wouldn't have felt it much, especially at that range. A .22lr isn't very powerful at all. Even the .223 that the AR uses (as underpowered as it is) is one hell of a lot more powerful than a 22. Personally if I were in that armor I'd probably rather take a hit from a .22 than from that axe. The .22 might leave a bruise, that axe would break bones.

From what he had been hinting, yes. He says he is only not advancing too fast into Iron Age because he needed to first explore some inventions before that, like armor and maths, which are somewhat unrelated but were born in the Bronze Age, not in Iron Age. That said, he DID point out that wars accelerated the development of iron tools, so these few weapon/armor videos are right on a segue into that technology.

Otherwise it makes it too hard for new members if a certain percentage won't sell to them. Edit: For what it's worth OP, I've sold to dozens of zero feedback accounts with no issues. The only issues I've had were with established accounts who were just jerks with no obvious warning signs in their feedback. Don't let this deter you, it's a numbers game and you just got unlucky off the bat. Also happens more often in certain categories like phones and other electronics that are easy for scammers to flip. The relatively substantial cuts the kopesh made are evidence of why some cutting swords later in history use extremely specialised blade designs for purposes like these. For example the type 1A falchions, the Pala, and the tegha all use broad blades with very fine edges for defeating layered textile clothing and armor efficiently. Some (like the Pala) go even further and use T shaped spines and incredibly thin edges to even further extend the ability to cut through layered cloths. When combined with a draw cut, it's a good way to defeat otherwise very effective protection.

I'd be interested to see if you could make it again using wheatpaste lagging and "forge" the layers by curing the breast and backplate in a linen press which was definitely available in Roman times with examples that are found in the murals of Pompeii. They possibly would not have needed to add fire-resistance to the material since Romans could weave textiles, such as table cloths and towels, with Asbestos and cleaned them with fire. The fibres of which, being made from stone, are nearly entirely fireproof, extremely durable, and also often white in colour. Alum has been in use as a fire-retardant since well before 5 BCE, and wheatpaste... probably nearly as long as we've been making bread. The egyptians with papyrus at least since 3000 B.C. Alum and Stannic (tin) oxide are locally available, fire-resistant, and commonly used textile glues/ dye components that are White in colour like the armour's depictions and may have been used as well.

The linen is pretty good at resisting cuts/stabs etc, but the addition of a lightweight rigid layer underneath would greatly help with dispersing the force of blows. It doesn't have to be strong as such, just stiff enough to hold the linen in shape. Even thick cardbaord would do.

For the arrow test you should have used broadhead arrows like the used back in the day and not bullethead arrows like you used

I learned somewhere (wish I could recall where for the source) that unbleached linin is better for armor than the 'higher quality' stuff we can buy today.

So in case of the Zombie Apocalypse this armor type works pretty good just make it a bit larger/cover whole body.

police in asia often use silk instead of kevlar in their vests. usually about 16 layers, stitched tightly together. one companu uses silkworm cocoons and epoxy, pressed into a mold.
@PabloEdvardo
@PabloEdvardo 4 года назад
The moment the linen suffered the first gunshot it was no longer a consistent test for the rest of the gunshots. The first shot clearly delaminated (pulled apart) some of the layers, reducing the stopping power for any follow up shots after. For a proper ballistics test you would probably have multiple linen targets, fresh for each bullet.

Need to get to iron, you don’t actually need to be able to melt it, just burn it with charcoal and pick the shiniest bits out to turn into your tools, heating it and shaping it will be viable.
