I worked at Charvel/Jackson in 85 but got sick and lost the job as a finishing sander. I can imagine what guitars I would have now if that did not occur. Story of my life then. Still have my black Charvel/Jackson satin jacket, a pay stub, a couple of pins and a Charvel sticker as momentos.

Hey, I was there in '85 too! Worked in the wood shop mostly doing inlay and fretting. Was there just a year then I moved onto my career. I was supposed to be allowed to make my own guitar after six months of employment, then they reneged and said I couldn't. After that, I knew the time to move on was approaching. Stayed a little longer. When then began their plans on moving to Ontario, I left. It was a great experience. Never realized how historic those guitar would become. Oh well.

I believe Karl Sandoval made the Bumblebee for Ed. There is a great picture of Karl with Edward and that Bumblebee. Ed did start doung things to the Bumblebee later, a weird metal pin sticking out of the top of the body to stop the bar from spining around, adding the original Floyd Rose and locking nut, but it was Karl that built the Bumblebee. Absolutely amazing history of these guitars!!!

Just came across your video - really cool all the detailed vintage Charvel history you present! I have a black Charvel strat with brass hardware, that I bought used from a music store in Laguna Beach, CA, back in 1984 for $375 - it doesn’t have a serial number anywhere on it, and has an Explorer headstock. Based on what I’ve read on a number of other vintage Charvel-related sites, I’m thinking mine might be a pre-1980 strat, since it’s sans the serial number and only has a small gold logo on the tip of the headstock. To my knowledge, no mods were ever done on it, and the minor blemishes were already there when I bought it. It’s been sitting mostly unplayed in its case for the last 35 years. George Lynch’s guitar tech, Gerry, first set it up for me some ten years ago, and 2 years ago, said he thinks it’s probably worth at least $5K now. He suggested finding an expert who can offer a definitive opinion on its history, date, value, etc. So wondering I sent you some photos you could let me know what you think, or if you don’t feel qualified to offer an opinion, then perhaps you could provide the contact info to someone who could. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think Jackson was the second one to start using Floyd's Kramer and Eddie started that see Eddie was an experimenter he would take variations of different strat style guitar's he would put different parts together like a Kramer body on. Fender neck or thing's like that he built different guitars all throughout his career.

I got a 1984 ash charvel san dimas , clear finish , routed strat style for 3 single coils with pickguard and a kahler . It has all the writings inside heel and neck pocket . It faintly is written in pencil " natural finish" in neck pocket . I havent seen one like it . It has the san dimas strat headstock hand rubbed oil finish with matching work order number on neck pocket and heel . Were these common? I know that people could request their customization from Charvel back then.

I’m becoming a semi serious Charvel collector. I’ve got a few pretty rare early 80’s ones. No Strat heads or prepros yet. And I have a few from 2008-2009 USA reissue ones. But my next focus needs to be Strat head guitars. They aren’t coming up for sale hardly at all. And if they do, it’s hard to determine if they are fakes. But damn do I love trying to get my hands on these. Even though I don’t have much money. I’ve still been able to get ahold of a few pretty notable ones. It just takes time and patience.

@dwb131313

Essex Recording Studios I seriously think they are a decent investment. They’ve got to be. I’m treating it that way. But much more important, I play them everyday and have actually toured with them. They definitely get used. But I also think they are only going up in value. They have a great story, and a very limited number of examples. One idea I’ve had for serialized neck plates is to take them off and put normal plates on. That way those awesome 3D plates don’t get beat up. A couple of mine actually still have the gold color to them, and I bet most people don’t even realize that they all were gold instead of chrome. Anyway dude, glad to touch base with you from the USA. I like what you got going on over there, and congratulations on the Mustaine collection. Peace guys!

There are not many old originals left (pre 1983)and IF one should come up for sale and it is not modded it will start at about $4K--5K. I made the incredible mistake of losing out on #1527 for $4K last year on reverb reverb.com/item/15312850-1982-charvel-san-dimas-strat-head-stratocaster-cherry-sunburst-usa-serialized-real-deal-amazing I offered 4K and it was accepted but i had took too long thinking it over and of course it was sold.😩

Unless Charvel did something screwy with the serial number sequence... they did NOT start with #1001 because I had a June 14, 1983 Star body, with the Charvel Fender style tremolo, and (first year) Jackson headstock (gold Charvel TM decal)... and this Star body very early Charvel was serial #0158

One on ebay now plus I read this.. Which is also on ebay An Ibanez Edge arm works perfectly...pops right in. It will be black instead of bare metal but assuming your JT-6 is black, its actually a better fit IMO. A standard Floyd arm wouldn't work without serious modification (they're screw in).

How is it that all these early classic hard to find USA Charvels in the UK? How did the owner of these guitars from the UK obtain these hard to find guitars and why the big interest in Charvels/Jackson when those guitars didn't really have that much of an impact in the UK.
