We meet the first English poet, Caedmon, in a fascinating manuscript called The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, written by the Venerable Bede in the 8th century AD.
Dear Professor, the story of Cadman (or Caedman ?) is almost the same as that of Prophet Mohammad who became messenger in 610 AC. His story of receiving first revelation from God is clearly told in all the relevant sources and known as such for about 14 centuries. the paralleism between the two is significant and crucial. I advise all to read his story, which is easily found and understood. I think there must be an interesting affiliation between the two, which may mean that English poetry begins with the last revelation of God to His last Prophet Mohammad!
