I was told in high school that I should not go to college and just find a retail job somewhere. I just retired from being a daycare assistant after 38 years and was paid very well on an aboriginal reserve on the edge of a lake with the Rocky Mountains overlooking us. My commute everyday was to drive around the lake passing maybe 1 or 2 vehicles, while beholding incredible views. BLISS. Dream job to cuddle babies all day!

as a child I always wanted to be a vet. The careers advisor when I was 14/15 realised I was not bright enough and suggested instead I deliver animal feed to farmers! For the past 38 years I have been a social worker!

At 15, my High School aptitude test recommended I was best suited to become a mechanic or a nurse!!! I indeed became an RN. My “mechanical” tendency stood me well as I was adept at repairing medical equipment!!

My son, several years ago, did the same type of careers advice survey. It suggested he should be a florist in Saudi Arabia! He has never gardened or wanted to live abroad. Can only presume because he is musical and artistic, they decided something creative would suit.

Investing in beauty always pay off in years of pleasure. The boys will be able to see how satisfying it is to be a good steward of the earth. My favorite childhood memories are watching my dad plant trees and care for them throughout the years. Mom had iris beds and lots of roses. You guys are great parents. I smiled all the way through this video.

LOL I loved your career advice John! I had a similar advice while in college...the computer said forest ranger was the recommendation for me. I love being outside but.... LOL. My advice is to try lots of jobs or intern positions to get a hands on picture. Remember...it isn't all about how much money one makes. Ask those who know you best what jobs/careers they can see you in. This advice worked for me when I found myself in my 50's looking to enter the workforce again after raising and homeschooling three children. My husband saw the advisement and encouraged me to apply: Employee Recognition and Internal Communications Coordinator for a large facility. I just retired after 8.5 years and it was definitely a job made just for me. I enjoyed it tremendously. I miss my work family as I begin a new chapter of life which includes gardening, grandkids and much more.

That’s hilarious, John! A dog beautician 😅In high school, here in the U.S. we took the ASVAB career test. I tested high in communications. One of the career suggestions for me was an Air Traffic Controller. Which is a running joke for anyone who knows me because, I’m the person who gets lost too easily and has a fairly short attention span 😂 Love watching all the building, landscaping, gardening and cooking projects. Ohhh I love Rhododendrons! The variegations on the one at the market were stunning ( is that what you planted to the left of the stairs?). The construction crew were amazing! I’m always wowed by how quickly they pull something together. And Crusoe’s little “Thank you Mario!” Was so heart warming. 🥰 The support network of people in the community is a beautiful thing.

The best career advice that I received was from my dad. He recommended to get an education where my strengths were and on top of that, make sure that I had an inside hobby as well as an outside hobby. He was a surgeon but loved to hike and was a beautiful artist and created some amazing paintings that we still have in our house. His philosophy on the hobbies was that when you are healthy, you can take advantage of your outdoor hobbies and when your health is not so great, or the weather is poor, you will always have your inside hobby.

As gardener, geologist, mom and G'ma I can watch you build with stone, choose and plant plants with a shot of kids in sprinklers thrown in, all day long! ❤😊❤

You know , both Tara and John are such engaging personalities! They are quite genuine in their chatty moments with the camera. And, the creativity in their video efforts are Always entertaining! Hello again from Lake Villa, Illinois in the USA. My goodness, your land is breathtaking. The time lapse of the rocks being placed was so mesmerizing. When I was young, I wanted to be a doctor, but then I saw my own blood and changed my mind. Then I wanted to be a veterinarian, because I love animals. But then I saw a dog being dragged down the back stairs of a vet that I was taking my dog to. I was really good in art so I wanted to be an artist or commercial artist or some field. But I was told by my mother that I would make no money And I should be a secretary, a secretary. I have nothing against secretaries or people who choose to be secretaries, but that just wasn’t what I had in mind to do anyway went to school to get up English major, but I really wish I would’ve went for art. It’s not a weird career choice, and no one at school told me that I would be a commercial, fisherman, or whatever, which I like to fish, gardening, work with wood. For years, I worked for the federal government here as a grant specialist. When I retired, I became a nanny, because I love children, and I love to watch them learn, grow, and figure out their footing in the world. I love that you let your boys just roam all over your land. That’s the way it should be. I think that builds children who don’t have boundaries, and no limitations. You and John are doing a great job raising your children there. Like I always say, you have my dream life. I’ve started on my garden here in Illinois spring comes around May here, so I made like a little greenhouse, sort of contraption on my table by the windows, I’ve started my strawberries, tomatoes, onions, and potatoes. I can’t do a lot because I don’t have a lot of property to use. I can’t wait to start your garden. I think that’s one of my favorite things to watch you do. I love the vacation, newbies, and I love the Homestead newbies. I’m so glad that you have a video out twice a week, because I don’t know if I could wait a week to watch you guys again. I usually watch some of your old videos. Tara, you and John are amazing. I like to watch John create something with wood, because he creates as he goes. He doesn’t have a blueprint and all that stuff. He creats art. Your cookbook is amazing. I love the recipes, I guess I could just say I love everything about the newbies. That would’ve made this comment a lot shorter. I’ve never been into diggers, but that time lapse was mesmerizing. Mario was doing such a great job. Happy spring newbies. ❤. By the way.Tara, I love the trees on your land. I’ve always had a love for trees. My godfather was a tree surgeon in the town where I grew up, so he taught me about trees. I feel like trees are living because they grow, and they produce leaves and flowers. If they were not living, they would be dead, and not producing those things. I was told by people that I’m a tree hugger.😊 OK then I’m a tree hugger. I hope you’re olive trees are growing and digging those roots down deep.

I didn't see that you ended up buying rhoda dendrums. I lived in the Willamette valley in Oregon.And we had the most beautiful rota dendrums every Spring.They are just beautiful and so green.Throughout the year after the blossoms.And flowers of gone. In fact portland oregon has a rhododendron garden that is open to the public because it's a park. I really love your wall and I love those stairs.You did a great job.

My husband was told he would not be able to get a job. He has worked all his life including as an orderly in hospital and a disability carer and at70 he is still working part time.

I took a similar test in high school and was told I was mechanically inclined. It gave me no direction but has served me in that I am detailed oriented. My favorite job ended up being a legal secretary for a boutique law firm that specialized in environmental law and details are so very important in that line of work. I gave it up to be a stay at home mom of three children (all young adults now on their own) and currently a passionate gardener and my own landscaper. “Detail oriented” has served me well. This is why I love watching all of your projects. 😊💐

As an American female that graduated from high in the 70's. We were told to be a nurse, teacher or secretary I wanted to be an archeologist but ended up a nurse for 44 years. I still think about archeology and enjoy watching digs !

John, bromeliads are an amazing plant and have very few roots. They're amazing on rock walls and they flower. See which ones grow well near you and they will do nicely where there's very little soil on offer. ❤

I was amazed last time that Mario made the wall and this was no different. Its incredible how he is able to do such beautiful and delicate work with a digger, I didnt realise you could. The trust Mario and his mate have in each other is incredible, the huge rock suspended in the air while he is underneath it, just wow.
