TfL had annouced that the TfL Rail service would start on Sunday December 15th with trains between Reading and Paddington, until we heard that there would be a small number of day starting a few weeks earlier to help get everyone involved prepared ...
TfL Rail is what TfL are calling their Crossrail services before they become the Elizabeth Line, but here we shall always love to call it the #PurpleTrain

Bit of TfL take over trivia: You can tell which station is run by TfL on the GW lines just by looking at the electronic passenger displays. The ones run by TfL just say "Paddington", GWR stations (and Network Rail run Reading) say "London Paddington".

Having seen these trains just parked on the side during several journeys from Reading to Paddington, it's nice to see them finally running. As a Reading local, I wonder if the upcoming contactless card payment will also be valid on the fast non-stop GWR trains from Reading to Paddington or only on TfL services. That would make life a whole lot easier. Love the video!

Important to realise - there will still be 2tph off-peak between Paddington and Didcot Parkway via Reading from 16th December going forward - serving Ealing Broadway, Hayes & Harlington, West Drayton, Slough, Maidenhead, Twyford and Reading (then all-stations to Didcot) operated by GWR and utilising the better quality Class 387 units. Off peak TFL services are 2tph Paddington-Reading, increasing to 4tph in the peaks when the GWR services run non-stop to Maidenhead or Reading and don’t serve the intermediate stations.

How wonderful to see my old home station! I used to catch the 08:25 limited stop train from that very platform in the early 1970s. I'd ride the train to Maidenhead to go to school. I don't know what class the trains were, but they were multi-set through corridor DMUs. Thanks for reviving the memories 👍

I think the reason why Ealing Broadway is stated as the destination is to discourage passengers bound for Paddington to board them as they're slower than the GWR High Speed services.

Somebody needs to ask TFL what happens when you have to "go". Those trains run on tracks where points fail or are frozen. I've been stuck on one for a couple of hours.

Those trains are a damn sight bigger than a 387! Wish we could get commuter oriented trains on the entirely commuter oriented Valley Lines services... most we can hope for in the next few years is the end of the Pacer and just maybe some 3 car Flirts, so slightly less sardine-like until the services get swamped by new train adopters!

Kind of funny how non-TfL services are in the Oyster system but TfL's own Crossrail through to Reading won't be part of Oyster. I wonder how much it would cost to upgrade the system to "Oyster 2.0" to allow more fare zones to be added past Zone 15.

It's so strange seeing you walk about that station, because I've been there soooo many times visiting friends, I recognise all of it :D I've always found the GWR trains packed out going back to Paddington from Reading, so hopefully this will relieve a lot of that passenger load! How fast is the purple train from Reading to Padding? Like how long does it take? I know the GWR train is about 25 minutes if it goes direct
@katrinabryce

At the moment, the slow GWR trains are timetabled to take about an hour. I believe the new timetable will reduce that to 50 minutes.

I'm still trying work something out. If I'm coming from Bristol to Farringdon do I get a GWR to Paddington then change to Elizabeth line or do I get a Bristol to Reading and get on the new line there? I'm guessing there will be many more trains from Paddington to Farringdon so I just stick with what I have always done. .. but grabbing the benefit of less stops Padd to Farr.

Nice video Geoff! Personally I don't like that the stations up to Reading won't accept oysters. Tfl should at least make a zone 7 or 8 for Slough as it's a major town that's still quite close to Heathrow and the number 81 bus goes there too which is operated by tfl with Metroline.

Shall we add Staines while we're at it? (TfL route 117)
@DavidWood2
@DavidWood2 4 года назад
If Slough will retain a GWR service (don't some of the IETs stop there?) then TfL Rail/Elizabeth Line will need to participate in a revenue share with GWR via ORCATS. They certainly will need to participate for Reading. This makes it vital to isolate those passengers being carried over that stretch in all ticketing streams. Adding the beyond West Drayton section to an existing zone could not achieve this, especially as Travelcard holders who do not have to touch out for a journey wholly covered by their Travelcard. There is only one zone left on Oyster - this is a hardware limitation of the now rather elderly system (in technical terms). Originally TfL were going to use this zone for the beyond West Drayton section but then changed their minds. With the growth of contactless ticketing away from the centre of London, the limits of Oyster were going to be a problem eventually. TfL understandably don't want to spend huge money upgrading Oyster and dealing with the confusion that only new "Oyster v2" cards work at certain stations. Instead, they have decided that certain stations will be Contactless only, with paperless tickets remaining in use for those who do not want to use Contactless or do not have a suitable card. It may well be that a national contactless platform is eventually established based on ITSO, at which point there is a proper solution to the limitations of Oyster. Until then, Oyster has reached its limit unless TfL decide to use the one remaining zone.
@DavidWood2
@DavidWood2 4 года назад
@@wintrwunderland Arguments based on buses are invalid, as TfL (and its predecessors) have always operated / franchised some services running beyond the Greater London boundary. The reason for the non-availability of Oyster beyond West Drayton is as I said in my longer reply - it would have needed a new zone and TfL declined to use the only remaining zone on the Oyster platform for this route.

Confused northerner here. Is extra standing space so important that toilets & tables are not provided; and what's the logic in providing no electrical sockets? Finally, is it really important which company provides the service & what colour the trains are? Do passengers really care?
