This is honestly one of my favorite channels. You remind me of my dad, and working with him as a kid on stuff around the house. Obviously you're at a much larger scope but it's that perfect blend of nostalgia and genuine learning and wisdom that comes through all of your videos.

Union Carpenter here (in Oregon). The best practice we have for placing bolts in concrete is to make a template using two sheets of plywood. Screw the two plywood templates together. Mark center and bolt locations. Drill out bolt holes for exact size or just a hair bigger of bolts. Then make a box by using the two plywood templates and space them with a row of 2x4 along the outside edge. Place bolts in Template and attach with nuts top and bottom. Add template or box to concrete for work. With centers marked on template, you can adjust for placement and elevation. On large pours we might cover the exposed bolts with white lithium grease or aluminum foil to preserve the threads from being coated with concrete. Love your channel, good luck!!!

Used to build traffic signals. Our bases (SW Missouri) 36" diameter 8-10ft+ 2" ×6,7,8ft J'bolts & #4 rebar cage. 1/8" flat template to the bottom of J aligns them. Used it to build top template from dbl 2x4 & 3/4 plywood

So close to the highway, I’d put a block wall there, or a concrete one, just in case a vehicle loses control. Love the videos 👍

There's a pretty substantial ditch between the highway and the driveway. I suspect that a vehicle going fast enough to jump the ditch would also punch through a block wall.

A word to the wise. You need 2 conduits running across for powered gates, 1 power,and 1for communication. Run (4) 1 inch. Typically the "slave" side is opposite of the "master" side where you trench power too..and control panel.. Christmas lights and globe..on top of column must be accounted for if a lady is involved. I installed automatic gates for 15 years.
@jonanderson5137
@jonanderson5137 Год назад
You're going to want a 3r sub-panel for the lighting and controls in the near vicinity too, and document the work and buried electric. If you're running wire into columns, you want your conduit to last, plan accordingly. Plan for sensors or timers. If you're running lighting down the drive, you should run 2 sets of conduit and bury a couple sets of comm wire too. I've had to dig out concreted light posts where guys ran UF, at least make an accessible junction nearby.

Oh man am I looking forward to this series! Concrete work was what originally drew me to this channel, so its always great to see; and I'm hoping/assuming we will get some blacksmithing work too. But beyond that, I cant wait to see the finished product for something that needs to be functional, structural, and aesthetic for the EC property. The draft work is already looking impressive!

Very nice. I live in Western Oregon and we have the expansive clay too. Generally for fence posts I go 3 feet down and just use 3/4 minus gravel that moves around with the soil. This seems fine even on corners (where you have a lot of sideways load). For my recent (mother of all) hammock frames I case a concrete pier about 3.5 ft down and a 12 inch sonotube. My little 30hp tractor has just enough power to run a 12inch auger in the clay but boy if it ever got stuck I'd be in a world of hurt..:)

Worried watching that bucket over the power lines (red paint). Were the lines pot-holed for depth or did the locator tell you the depth?
@andrewalexander9492
@andrewalexander9492 Год назад
I'm pretty sure that the red paint lines were Scott's own layout for his project, not utilities locate marks. From other parts of the video it looks like all the power is overhead (including, I think the service.) I see a telecom pedestal further down the driveway, but that's a ways away, and a Tcom locate would be orange.

12:08 welding rebar always seems like a no no. Makes us structural engineers cringe. But, you actually can. Typical rebar is ASTM A615 material. You can not weld that. But, if you spec ASTM A706 you can weld it. We often spec this for major prefab mats so you can weld it an make construction much easier.

I'm assuming they're lookie-loos from RU-vid (that aren't the deer), and it's sad that people think that it's okay to do that. You're not running a business like South Main Auto or something like that where you have an actual shop open to the public. Ugh, I hate people sometimes.
