The Tom Rose School Tracking
The tracking test for TRS Professional is identical to the requirements for IGP level I. The handler lays their track, minimum 300 paces, three legs (a leg refers to a straight path usually over 150 paces in length), two turns (approx. 90 degrees), two articles (articles are a strip of leather, carpet). After the handler lays the track, they must wait for a minimum of 20 minutes (usually more) before tracking with their dog.

In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training.
Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example, a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early.

Holy Cow. LOVED Tom Rose's "Coda". I AM SO EXCITED to start this TOMORROW with my GSD. I KNOW 100% he will LOVE this!!! Last night, he went NUTS trying to track a fox in our neighborhood--I didn't know THAT was what he was doing, I only knew he immediately went into crazy high drive when we walked out the door, but his nose wouldn't leave the ground (even though overall obedience is great). On our way home, a beautiful fox ran in front of us--that was clearly what he'd been sniffing the entire excited walk. SO GLAD YOU'RE DOING A SERIES, my German Shepherd 💖 Dog thanks you in advance!!!!!

No need to comment, Nate. But have 4 flags, taking my stinker boy working line GSD out to do this RIGHT NOW. Today or in next couple days, will share a video of how it goes. I am 100% confident my love-boy will LOVE this, I'm very excited to try. Honestly, no idea where we'll go further, but trusting your continued videos will direct us in the future using this tracking box idea. But I KNOW this initial tracking box idea will get two thumbs up from my boy, lol!!!

I just found you a few day ago and I'm very impressed by your work! It helps me very much and even as a non-native speaker I can understand you very clear, keep up the great work! I'd be very happy if you could make a video about a "try again" marker in the future. For example I say "sit" my dog lays down and instead of correcting my dog I say "wrong" or whatever and they know this was not the behavior I asked for, so they try something else. I really like this concept because I don't like correcting my dogs when they messed up a command because this can take out fun and excitement out of our training sessions and I want a dog who isn't afraid to fail and who is eager to try again and again. I saw a lot of trainers use a "try again" marker but I haven't really gotten behind on how to condition them, would appreciate a video on this topic :)
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 года назад
Thanks! It's called a non-reinforcement marker and it's used for mistakes. However, a lot of trainers will pause for a moment when the dog made the mistake, then re-command. Once the dog does it correctly, they mark and reward. For example; you say "sit" and your dog downs instead. You pause for a second or two, then re-command "sit", the dog sits then you mark and reward. If you want to use a non-reinforcement marker, then just start using it while training. For example: you say "sit" and your dog downs instead. You say your non-reinforcement marker, then re-command "sit", the dog sits then you mark and reward. Cheers!

Your videos have been my go to. Have you considered making a video (or do you have any content) outlining socialization and training priorities in the order they should learn from week 8 and on? It would be nice to know how to structure the training of a puppy for obedience as well as advanced skills. I have a blue heeler puppy coming home in 2 weeks. I plan on him going with me everywhere so I know socialization as well as training are critical especially during his first few months. I also know learning one command first helps build for additional commands. So having that structure would be awesome. Thanks for all that you do.

Read through the comments, didn't see my question: Is it okay to put my dog into a "down" at a distance while I set up the box in the beginning? Or is that a bad idea if I want to continue tracking work? This exercise looks like a lot of fun to learn & do with my German Shepherd, looking forward to your next videos on tracking, absolutely awesome. PS: going to buy your book on Amazon in paper copy so I can highlight & mark up pages, lol

Yes, I believe you can put your dog in a down while you set up the tracking box. Some may say that the dog shouldn’t see the setup, but I never had any issues with it. You can always do a few without the dog watching the setup to be sure. Cheers!

Going to do this with my German Shepherd (will be genetically"easy" & fun for him), BUT could I also do this with my neighbor's Husky I've also been working with? I routinely walk with the neighbor & her Husky. I've been teaching obedience to the Husky, and I alternate ball throwing off leash with both boys. Could this be taught to a breed other than GSDs, Mals, Beagles, Dachshunds, buy to other off-breeds we don't necessarily expect to be "great tracking" dogs? Looks do fun, I KNOW my German Shepherd will LOVE IT!! Thanks for making beginning tracking accessible to put owners!💖🌞

Yes, you would want a long line. If you want true off-leash reliability, then you would need a remote collar. You can learn how to use one here, from Michael Ellis. leerburg.com/ellis-ecollar.php?gclid=CjwKCAjwj6SEBhAOEiwAvFRuKA3K2XFsQCo6g_YNkPxcrcQBYVYuFHA2iZKgzxuT0KOAPJRIFqMn4xoCnbQQAvD_BwE

@GroschelHD 3 года назад
I need to ask two other quick questions, I hope that's okay :) 1. When training my dog a go pee or poo command, do I just say the word right before they do it until they connect the word with the behavior or do I mark and reward when they are doing it? Because I'm scared that the dog will stop the behavior and get the reward, and that's not what I want. And second, when I build up a correction marker, can/ should I reward when the dog is following the marker? For example my dog stares at a cat, I say "no", my dog has learned that " No" Means to stop something and get away, so my dog stops staring at the cat and goes a step back, should I reward the dog for following the correction?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 года назад
1. Just take your dog outside and say the potty command. You can praise your dog while they are going potty. You don't have to mark and reward. 2. No. You can praise the dog for making the right decision, but you don't want to give a reward. The reason is that your dog may offer up the bad behavior, so you say no, they stop and get the treat.

My dog is not food motivated at all. What can I do for her to get her tracking on a line. Should I skip the tracking box and lay a short line with one article and her toy under it. That way, I can mark the behavior when she gets to the article?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 8 месяцев назад
I wouldn't recommend that approach because it could cause your dog to rush the search for the article, leading to ineffective and inaccurate tracking. I would dedicate a few months to focus primarily on tracking training, ensuring that the dog receives all their food during tracking exercises. If tracking becomes the sole method for your dog to eat, then they will associate tracking with mealtime. This means you will be able to use food effectively as a reward during tracking. :)

Hey Nate, I was wondering do you know of any business that will give me a dog to train into a service dog? What I mean is they give me a free dog and I keep it in my house for how ever long it takes to be trained as a service dog then I give it back fully trained and they give it to someone who needs a service dog?? If you know of any that would be super helpful! Also if you know of any would they give me a like crate for the dog or would I have to buy the crate, food, treats, etc? Also this dog was not in this video but I just wanted to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE that little white dog you trained the small one that's all white he/shes super cute!

I'm sure a lot of places will offer something like this if you can prove to them that you can train the dog. I would suggest reaching out to a few places to see what they say. Cheers! :)

I am worried that teaching tracking would encourage my dog to eat random things off the ground. She already has a tendency to do so. Is it something to be concerned about or are the flags enough of an indicator that the exercise is separate from 'real life'?

what if the dog gets a habit of taking whatever food he finds in grass

Dogs are very situational. You can also correct them for picking up random things from the ground if you haven't told them to track.

The dog is only tracking the food its used to get as a treat, not your sent as the dog knows your cent.

Dogs can pick out multiple smells individually unlike humans who only smell all scents combined. As explained in the video, the dog is learning the association between the scent and taste of the reward with the scent of the human.

HELPING A SICK DOG. This isn’t a problem for me right now. I think it important that a pet, dog, cat, horse be trained to indicate pain and where it is. Without in anyway using pain to teach. Can you teach a dog the concept of sickness, pain and ask it if it is sick or In Pain? Can you teach a dog to respond if you point to a part of the body and say does it hurt there? Thank you
