I'm unironically glad you're here to guide me through drawing lines and shapes. Wading into the art community felt like walking into a gym with buff people lifting their max reps akin to master artworks while you took time out of your day to show me a basic push-up.

Thanks for sharing!!! My two boys(5 & 13) and myself decided we wanted to learn "how to draw", so we ran out and bought a cheap sketchbook at michael's and started our drawing class tonight. We were all super excited that we could actually draw a straight line. lol.. Great instruction and easy enough for my 5 year old to successfully draw a cube that is is extremely proud of! We will keep watching!

I've realized I need to take a step back and seriously evaluate how I'm going to approach art from where I currently stand. I have so much "advanced" information packed up in my head but what I really want is to stack cubes on paper like it's the easiest thing... which it should be.

Hữu Nguyễn: If it helps, try establishing a framework for your ellipse: First, construct a square with the desired perspective. Divide it into quarters, keeping the lines consistent with the perspective. (optional) Go from corner to corner diagonally, intersecting in the centre where the other lines also meet. Next, keeping inside the larger square, arc from section to section with the same motion. If done correctly, the ellipse will fit neatly into the main square (the fullest part of the arc will be exactly on the diagonal axis for each quarter), which can be extended should you wish to turn the ellipses into a cylinder.
@arroyosonja
@arroyosonja 5 лет назад
Brandon Dayton - not that I know if it is true, I wanna throw it out there since it resonated with me when I heard it yesterday. If one has trouble with circles or ellipses, it would be better to train on a print out of different sized circles/ovals. Retrace each size with your pencil clockwise and counter clockwise for a couple of times. If you mess up, start again. It has to do with muscle memory. If you do it the wrong way over and over, it’s in your muscle memory as well. So maybe predrawn shapes and later to a blank sheet of paper would be beneficial for learning?

@BrandonDayton
@BrandonDayton 6 лет назад
I've thought about doing this, but I honestly think there are people better suited to learn from. My one tip would be to stop thinking about it as "shading" and start thinking about it as "lighting". Remember, everything part of an object that is visible is lit by a light source. If you can figure out how it is being lit, you can figure out how to render it correctly. I would really recommend reading anything by Sam Nielson on the subject (aka his blog). If you can take one of his schoolism classes, that would be best.

First thing: don't move around your paper sheet. Then, try to make similar exercises to the ones in this video, but starting the lines from different directions and not making only straight lines from left to right, or just from the position you're more comfortable. If you're in front of a big canvas, or a bigger paper sheet taped to a fixed position, like a drawing table, or a wall, you're not going to turn it and move it around, would you?
